Just watched a youtube video on the sinking of U864 which was torped by a British sub off Norway - so sad, made I cry for all submariners who lost their lives in the war.:nope:

Care to share the link? :hmmm:

If so, thanks in advance!

I wonder if this is the same program that airs on History/HistIntl/Military channels. I've seen it a number of times, most recently this afternoon. :DL

If so it's a combination of dramatic reenactment of the events of the boat's sinking and the modern day exploration of the wreck, in part to determine what environmental dangers it might pose due to the mercury on board.

Don't know any other sources for the story so I can't say how accurate the presentation is, but I find it compelling to watch.

Roger that, would be most fascinating to watch...

Quite enjoyed James Cameron`s Expedition Bismarck, (watched it again the other day), so I`m pretty sure this would be compelling as well. :yep:

apologies folk, I thought I had put the full title in so you could find it on YouTube, but clearly I did not. It is probably the one Firewall has linked, also called Hitlers Last Deadly Secret. Frau Kaleun it is exactly as you describe :)

The first and only time during WWII that a sub was destroyed by another sub whilst both were submerged.

Makes it all the more remarkable...

BTW, just read the following on the linked page:

This is the only known incident in all of naval warfare in which one submarine sinks another while both are submerged.Just wondering if it's WWII or 'all of naval warfare?' :hmmm:

I would guess all of naval warfare. Although with modern torpedoes the sinking of other submerged submarines is an easier task, I don't think it has actually been put to the test in real combat. If I'm not mistaken, the only time a nuclear submarine has fired it's torpedoes in anger was during the Falklands war back in 1982 when a British sub sunk the Belgrano. I'm sure others will correct me if I'm mistaken.

If I was a betting man I'd say your right but if it has happened since nobody is releasing any info about it :03:

The Kursk comes to mind, and I'll say no more.

I think the evidence suggests that the sinking of the Kursk was caused by an internal explosion. Wasn't she carrying torpedoes that were powered by hydrogen peroxide?

I personally believe the Kursk was testing the latest version of the Shkval.

It is my belief that the engine lit while still in the tube, the subsequent heat detonating the warhead, quickly followed by the other warheads in the torpedo room. Hence, the double explosion reported by the lurking nato subs and sosus data, although the shallow waters could also account for hearing a double detonation. Acoustics are weird that way.

Personally, I was moved to tears when the first reports hit the news.

The Soviets may have been my adversary, but they were never my enemy, and all submariners share a common enemy, the sea.

I honestly don't think she was destroyed by an attack from a submerged adversary :nope:

Makes for a good conspiracy theory though... :03:

Here's an interesting link on the topic:

Additional information never hurts, nor does have to be "swallowed whole". But doesn't that statement hold true for any source of information?

That's sweet. I've never seen that piece, which is surprising. It is just the kind of thing you'd think would be on the Discovery or History channels.
Especially with Peter Coyote narrating.

And while the conclusions are supposition, it is pretty much extrapolated from the same facts I studied. The nature of the exercise, the Pope case, North fleet actions directly after the sinking, etc.

The clincher for me was discovering the sonar data a couple years after the incident.

Thanks for posting that link.
