Hi,
I am desparate because I can't play SH3 anymore. After I load a Savegame I get a CTD after "Not so long ago". I tried every tipp given in other theads without success. I reinstalled the game many times. Has anyone an idea?
Thanks

I guess the only working solution to this problem is only saving while in port.
If I don't have the time to finish the patrol, I'll put my computer to sleep mode.

Does sleep mode work with sh3?

you do not say whether you are using XP or W7, which would be useful to know. With W7 there is (or rather, was) a resolution difficulty with some folks machines. I think I had to ensure it was set to 1024x780 before I could get SH3 to work on there. Look in the Cfg file main settings for that info, in Libraries-Documents-data-cfg-main.
If in XP, and Event Viewer sheds no useful light on the faulting module, it might be that you have to uninstall everything, including savs and the User Profile files that get built when you have a career - the lot. It would be a good idea to uninstall using something like Revo Uninstaller, which will clear out any references in the registry ( use it carefully and only click on the bold), common files, application data etc, so you really are starting from scratch. I say this because that is what I had to do when I had the same problem as you are now experiencing. Just uninstalling the game and re-installing won't be enough Everything must go... but see what the others here say first in case things have moved on as I am talking several years back now. :)

It has worked for me (Windows 7 32-bit, laptop, SH3+GWX, AMD Fusion). I pause the game, alt+tab out of the game, then instead of shutting down the computer I select sleep or hibernate.
Hibernation/sleeping sometimes has a glitch though - when I come back the ambient sound might go on and on in a loop. If I heard the sound of wind and waves while pausing the game, that sound might be heard over and over again even when inside the sub, like in the hydrophone room. Or you might be in the hydrophone room, while pausing the game, and when you come back from hibernation, you might hear hydrophone background noise everywhere. I'm now experimenting going to sleep from the radio room. I think the background noise in that room is the most pleasant to bear.

This will happen if you save near a convoy/task force and/or near land.
My game always crashes if I use sleep mode or hibernate mode (windows7, 64bit) probably because I don't set the resolution of my desktop to the game resolution.
A mod conflict will also cause this problem.

TDW_DC_waterdisturbance_V4.0_SH3 has unfortunately been shown to bork up saves made while at sea:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=180921
That's the thread for another of TDW's new mods, but the discussion about problems with save games starts in post #93. All quotes noted here are from Stiebler's remarks there and in a later post in the same thread.
When testing this mod extensively, and the depthcharges disturbance mod, for a new version of NYGM, I found that it was almost impossible to reload any saved game. (Releases of NYGM are tested with a full career.)
The problem of reloading saved games which then cause CTDs is very well known, and can have a number of causes, but I could not reload *any* game created after sighting any enemy unit (sea or air or convoy), evading it to a safe distance, then making a saved game. I could only reload a game saved soon after departing base, when no enemy had yet been seen.
By a tedious process of systematic trial and error, it became clear that it was one or other (or both) of the TDW_Ship_Plane_Fire_Damage_v1.4_SH3 and the TDW_DC_waterdisturbance_V4.0_SH3 that was corrupting the saved game (almost certainly the Ship_Plane_Fire_Dame mod). Once these files were removed, it became possible to save and reload games again - subject to all the usual limitations!
After reading the majority opinion that the real problem was probably the depthcharge-disturbances mod, I played a long patrol in early 1944 with TDW_Ship_Plane_Fire_Damage_v1.4_SH3 mod in place, and the TDW_DC_waterdisturbance_V4.0_SH3 mod excluded.
After attacking three convoys and being bombed and depth-charged several times, and making repeated save-games, I was still able to reload successfully the last saved game after nearly three months at sea.
So those who blamed the TDW_DC_waterdisturbance_V4.0_SH3 mod were correct.

Presuming you're running some, I'd take a look at the mods. Can you give us a list?

There's so much info lacking from OP that it's just a guessing game. :yep:

Agreed.
Are you experiencing a CTD...if so what message comes up on the screen afterwards?
Or is the game simply returning you to desktop?

I have this problem occasionally, my solution is to save regularly on patrol and when the words not so long ago come up ..... I hold my breath :O:

It might also help if you have a prayer mat turned toward Mecca :DL

Hard to say since you didn't mention if this happens with every save, or just the most recent one. If you can start a new career and play single missions without problems, then it's likely that your most recent save is corrupt due to any of the reasons described in the saved game bug threads. Try back-tracking through your saves from most recent to oldest (if you start with oldest, it will erase all others).
It might also help if you have a prayer mat turned toward Mecca :DLIf it is turned away, then it is still turned towards aswel. :p
The solution is to ask Bernard. He has usually done it.
