"... It doesn't seem that he's abandoning those values, however, only trying to implement them on a larger scale and divorce himself from the political complexities of nationalism. Superman also says that he believes he has been thinking "too small," that the world is "too connected" for him to limit himself with a purely national identity. As an alien born on another planet, after all, he "can't help but see the bigger picture."

That'd be funny if it wasn't so true...

While this wouldn't be this first time a profoundly American comic book icon disassociated himself from his national identity -- remember when Captain America became Nomad?

No. Anyone else?

Maybe he's just trying to avoid paying his taxes. :shifty:

Another attempt to keep a tired character fresh and relevant. Apparently, killing him off again might be going to the well once too often.

Bah superman shmooperman he's always been an illegal alien. Who gave him is citizenship anyhow? I never saw Him take classes or an oath. He just falls from the sky and starts telling people he's from around here. Probably threatened those poor farmers. Then just walks in and takes a job away from legal citizens. I say hit the road go back to Krypton ya bum.

But Capt. America? now that hurts, He's a homey better than superman ever could be. But never heard of this NOMAD character until now. Poor Captain America

Whats next G.I. Joe deserting and joining the United Nations Task Force with C.O.B.R.A.?

Don't worry. It only lasted long enough for the writers to come to their senses and realize how bad an idea it was.

In Captain America #180 (December, 1974) Rogers becomes disillusioned with the U.S. government when he discovers that a high ranking government official (heavily hinted to be the then President of the United States Richard Nixon) is the leader of the terrorist organization known as the Secret Empire.

Rogers then decides to abandon his Captain America identity, feeling that he cannot continue to serve America after this latest discovery has shattered his faith in the nation's status. However, a confrontation with Hawkeye (disguised as the Golden Archer) forces Rogers to realize that he cannot abandon a life of heroism, and he subsequently takes on the name "Nomad" (as it means "man without a country") adopting a new dark blue and yellow uniform with no patriotic markings on it at all.

This identity is short-lived, with Rogers maintaining it for a mere four issues of the comic to varying degrees of success; he even trips over his own cape at one point. At the conclusion of Captain America #184 (April, 1975) Rogers returns to the role of Captain America when he realizes that he could champion America's ideals without blindly supporting its government.

Kinda like Coke and New Coke then back to Coke.

Rogers returns to the role of Captain America when he realizes that he could champion America's ideals without blindly supporting its government.

You think maybe Julian Assange might be his new secret identity?

Well considering that Superman was an illegal alien, I am surprised more here are not in favour of him losing his "citizenship"

I don't think superman entered this country through an approved portal nor do I think he had the proper documentation. :nope:

I think the Daily Planet needs to be fined for hiring an undocumented worker.

What, noone here has read Superman: Red Son? :hmmm:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman:_Red_Son

Brilliant comic, I really enjoyed it. It really had much more to say about America than it did about the USSR, but the underlying message of it was basically that Superman was Superman, and it didn't matter where he landed. And that this was both a good and a bad thing. And ultimately it wasn't national policy but a kind of human character which we all share that defined him.
Couldn't put it down, instead of being cheesy and cliche, it was really a great example of how comic books can have a lot to say :yep:

More likely a less than subtle attempt to sell more comics by garnering free publicity from the likes of Glenn Beck going on about the controversy. Then, in a follow-up issue Superman sees the errors of his ways and comes back into the fold just like Captain America did. It's a win-win for DC Comics. However, this sort of manipulation will probably turn some readers off as well.

This is what really got Glenn Beck fired from FOX when he tried to warn the public about it. Ladies and gentlemen this goes all the way to the top. George Soros thats right I said George Soros is personally overseeing Superman's transition to the darkside. Soros close and personal friend Donald 'The Donald' Trump owns controlling shares in Aquafina, Dansai, and Perrier is involved too. He is introducing mind control drugs in the water supply which make people read these so called comic books. This is way bigger than anyone could have ever imagined.

Glenn Beck is starting to remind me of the Colonel Flagg character from MASH. Patriotic and psychotic at the same time.

I buy ammo by the case because I believe our country is in the craper and about to get flushed. I was an eagle scout an therefore my motto is "be prepared". I firmly believe that one day beans and bullets will be the modern day dollar.
I'll be honest though I haven't read superman since jr. high. However, I clearly remember the "truth, justice, and american way" that he stood for. I guess two out of three aint bad huh?:-?

My favorite Flagg moment, as best I can remember...

Flagg: I was never here. I'm the wind.
*lights go out*
*a thud is heard*
*followed by an "oof"*
*lights come back on*
*Hawkeye looks out of tent*
Hawkeye: I think the wind just broke its leg.

I loved that scene too. My favorite Flagg line was, "Don't play dumb, you're not as good at it as I am." :D
