View Full Version : S-class supersubs?

What on Earth or British S-class subs made out of?
I had just left Wilhelmshaven, when off the Danish coast I encountered a Brit sub. It was the middle of the night, so I got within 2000m and opened fire with my deck gun. The AI was having trouble hitting (perhaps because of the odd outline of submarines?) so I took over. I quickly knocked out their deck gun, so I only needed to worry about their flak.
They didn't sink until I had eight (8!!) rounds left! Granted, a significant percentage missed, but I stopped counting once I'd hit them 30 times with my 88. That was when I still had most of my ammo. I hit the thing below the water line, on the conning tower, forward, aft, everywhere! I even sprayed them with several hundred 20mm rounds. It was sheer stubbornness on my part that kept me going.
So I ask again, what super submarine hull technology did the Brits have in WWII that no one told me about? :hmmm:

There you go: You have learned a valuable lesson. Either torpedo the enemy sub or just let it go. It can not dive or lauch torpedoes.
In fact it is better to let it go since the renown given is small.

They can fire their deck gun accurately from 8000 to 12000 meters, too. Amazing gunnery skills.

Now you know how the Brits won the war.
Gamewise...better to avoid IMHO or hit with one eel and be prepared to wait a while for the inevitable flooding process to do its work.
The S Class is well known for being a slow sinker.

2 eels and 50 10.5cm rounds won't do the job either.

I sank a T class tied up alongside a tender in under a minute with 1 torpedo. Did they switch to aluminum for the T class?

How disappointing! To think, they made a sub game in which only the player can submerge. Can anything fire torpedoes except me?
I was really excited about having a sub v. u-boat duel, especially with the sub so close to my home base, like he was trying to pull an allied Gunter Prien! Oh well, live and learn.

Either that or tin foil... :O:

Correction: they made a sub game without any sub except yours.
Every other submarine you see in this game is the work of the community, and well, it inevitably functions like a surface ship. That can't be changed, and unfortunately that means that their damage will get a little odd.
Naturally, no torpedoes either.

So the other subs are from GWX? But what about the planes? Surely not the planes. Why didn't they give torpedoes to them? In the war, naval patrol planes dropped homing torps and the like.
I want to fear torpedoes! :ping:

Some planes were surely armed with torpedoes, wasn't it a torpedo fired by a Swordfish that borked the Bismarck's rudder?

Sure was, and a very fortuitous shot at that...
They came in as low as possible to try and stay under Bismarck's AA fire, and then timed the release to coincide with the waves (so as to avoid having the torp thrown off course). Pretty tough to wait for the perfect moment when all hell is breaking loose all around you. One in a million shot...

I'm sure if it were possible, it would have been done by the great modders. What about the engine makes AI torpedoes and submerging submersibles impossible?

No , nobody can fire torpedoes, not the Ubooten nor enemy subs nor torpedo boats of any kind.
I had came across a mod in the DL section that put invisible 14 inch guns on PT torpedo boats to act as torpedoes but I can not find it again.

I think I've sunk all "my" S classes instantly with one torpedo targeted midships and set to 1 Meter depth. IIRC this aways gave me the "enemy unit destroyed" message instantly. Maybe the deck gun failure is a little mean reminder that the player sub can take a lot of shells too. :88)

Think of it this way. How much punishment can your u-boat take before she's destroyed? Not loss of hull integrity from going too deep whilst damaged, but outright shot to bits on the surface? How many times have you been clipped by aircraft MG fire or taken an unlucky strike from a freighter's gun?
Come to that, how many people have accidentally torpedoed themselves with Zaunkoenige and struggled back to base afterwards?
Exactly. If your boat can take all that punishment and still function, then you can bet the British boats will too.

The Bismarcks AA fire system was designed to track and engage much faster planes and was therefore not as effective against the Swordfish as some might believe.

Possibly the finest moment for the old stringbag (Swordfish) was the part they played in the attack on Taranto:

I bagged a few S-Class subs over the years and last week Bagged my first T-Class sub, did it feel good? Right on. :DL

Are you kidding? I got hit once in this engagement from their deck gun, and I was down to 80% hull integrity.
I hit them dozens of times.

Did that actually happen in your game? Or is that one of the missions?

It was a test mission I created when we were developing GWX3.0
