Hello no very good english ,


I am new to the series and i instaled silent hunter 4 a week ago .

I play on unrealistic mode : unlimited batteries etc , however when i see a ship and i target it from the periscope the triangle is green but all time the torpedo misses . When i am desperate i make full speed 21 knots and surface and moments before i collide with the ship and emergency dive i shoot the missiles but again they miss .

For fun i tried manual targeting but when i go to recognition manual i shoot the missiles but the ship either changes speed or turns left right etc :S


Moreover , i wonder why submarines do not enduree in the depth they say . I tested the Gator i think ( the one with 6 forward slots and behind slots) but it crashed . I slowely went to 100 metres then 120 then 140 then 165 where it is supposed to be the limit and as you understand it started flooding.

is there any submarine in this game , or in any mod-addon that i can download that is strong long fast and can go to great depths such as 1000 metres ?


One last question so that i dont bore you ^^ . When is a destroyer i go to periscoipe depth silent running and it starts shoting at me :S . The question is if i dive deep 120 metres for example how can i target and hit it back ?


Silent Hunter 4 looks like a very good game altough it can get really boring to refuel in stations even with time compressing . I hope there where more submarines and more "liberty " as captain , for example walk in the submarine talk to crew :(

You are most likely using meters but US subs use feet.

S-boats 200 feet or 60 meters
Gato 300 feet or 90-100 meters
Baleo 400 feet or 120 meters

If you are too close, the torpedos will not arm. I cannot give you any advice for auto targeting as I play manual only.

No WWII boat could go to 1000 meters; at least they could not and return to the surface. :) Some, perhaps got down to 600 ft. or so, but this was rare.

I'm guessing that you are playing stock. Most SH4 fans use the 1.5 version and one of the mega-mods. You can read the posts and make up your own mind.

The most common reason for misses playing stock and auto targeting is failure to open the torpedo tube doors BEFORE you shoot. Use the Q key to open all your doors first.

Next most common is range, either too long or too short.
Allow at least 450 meters arming distance as mentioned earlier. Try for ranges between that and 1500 meters, any longer the target will see the torpedo wake in good weather. Bad weather and night time are your friends for long range shoots. Escort destroyers are very hard to hit as they see the torpedoes much earlier than merchants and also are much more maneuverable. For a long and healthy career avoid DDs as much as possible. Bad weather also helps you evade the escorts.

If you're playing the standard V1.4 as suggested get the U boat Missions expansion that is V1.5 and improves the Fleetboat game a great deal and adds some U boat action.

This game is a strategy game more than a shoot em up so keep that in mind and with a little practice you can have some success. Take your time and set up good shots, wait for dark or heavy weather. Once you start planing out a good attack and sink some ships I think you'll enjoy the game. As far as very deep diving goes it is not all that necessary in stock as the escorts are pretty easy to evade. Silent running and very slow speed will most often get the job done. Just takes practice.

Yeah - and there isn't much need to dive deep - ever.

Usually about 100 feet down and I can get away

If there are 3 or 4 really tenacious destroyers, I might have to go to maximum depth and take evasive maneuvers. Usually a few reverse turns and decoy launches gets it done so I can sneak into the middle of the convoy and launch an attack.

And keep in mind that there is a maximum depth for torpedo launches

I believe that some of the ships draft data in stock was incorrect and they never fixed it so he may be fired at one of the ships that has incorrect data for its draft.

Welcome aboard. :haha: You are definitely having a hard time. But many of us did at the beginning. This is not an easy simulation to master. If you cannot hit the target when the triangle is green, something does not seem right.:hmmm: Don't get too close to the target, because, as noted above, the torpedoes will not arm and will bounce off. I suggest you go to the skipper's bag of tricks sticky and begin reading about the Dick O'Kane method. Also, below a certain depth, I think 90 feet, you are too deep to launch torpedoes.

Ah run silent run deep....
If you have hull damage you can not go as deep.

One more question so that i dont open another thread : I hear silent hunter 5 is a crap game is it worth buying ? On gamespot rating is 5 .

Without proper modding SH5 does have some serious problems. But it is being properly modded and a lot of people are enjoying it. It still lacks some of the things some of us want, but that's no reason not to try it, especially since it's so cheap now.

On the other hand there is a perfectly good supermod for playing u-boats in SH4.

My distance of choice when torpedoing those juicy freighters is between 1000 meters and 2500 meters - but that is only because I prefer those G7 torpedos, which are homing torpedoes, and compensate for misjugments in distance, speed and angle on the bow. Straight running torpedoes, preferably, should be shot as close as possible (respecting minimum arming distance, which is around 500 meters) since as targets are farther away, there is much more room for misses. Even in auto-targeting. For manual targeters as myself, the problem is even greater since a small misjugment in the target's speed (say, it is actually running 7 kts and you imput 5) makes the torpedo miss the targed by several hundred yards, or more. :oops:

Of course, circumstances will dictate how close you get to the target. Cargo ships cruising all by themselves in the middle of the indic ocean are simply begging to be sunk, and surprisingly, there are a lot of them. Choose them as your primary target for now, until you develop higher skills. Get in front of them, circling from afar so that you are not spoted. Then dive to periscope depth about 5 quilometers ahead of the target, and position yourself in a manner where it will be in front of you when it as it passes by, some 1500 meters away. If you do that without being spotted, it will keep saling slowly in a straight line just in front ouf you, and a hit will be easier. If you act too anxious and manage to be spoted, the ship will immediately speed up its engines, and start sailing in a evasive pattern - diminishing your chances of a succesful hit.

Getting your torpedoes to hit the target is more a matter of tactics, then it is of aiming and shooting. Because the first rule is to get as close as possible, in a confortable position to gather the target's info, without being detected. How to do that with escorts bouncing you all over the place, now that's the real deal, so avoid this kind of combat until you feel you are more experienced.

About that dive depth there... 1000 meters is a lot, isn't it? Apart from specialized vehicles (recovery, etc), military subs even today can't dive further than 500 meters more or less - or at least that's what you find out playing sonalists' "dangerous waters" or "sub command" for instance, which are games you could consider checking out. Just a hint: if you find autotargeting hard, you will go crazy when you learn about something called "TMA" (target motion analisys) in modern subs.

As for a more modern US Navy sub well my good friends old man served on Boomers in the 70's and we used to ask him this as a joke..... the answer to how deep can a Benjamin Franklin Class submarine dive to?: "If I told you I'd have to go to Leavenworth for a long damn time or kill both of you boys if I answered that and I don't want to spend any time inside Leavenworth." but they can go fairly deep I don't know about 3,280 ft.

This is true it was some place between Vladivostok and Kamchatka in the Sea of Okhotsk an area then claimed by the Soviets as territorial waters however it was in a not very deep(400ft I think) location shallow enough(by US Navy standards) for Navy Divers to attach the recording devices and come back and remove them and replace them every so often that was the only down side is we had to wait a few moths to able to collect the recovered data so it was not a live feed.The sub was the USS Parche a Sturgeon class SSN.Such a mission would be very unwise for a ballistic missile carrying submarine indeed unless you wanted to start WWIII pronto if it where to get spotted by the Soviet Navy spotting a US Navy attack sub on the other hand would just have really really pissed them off.

They came and went several times but on one recovery the divers could not find the devices and our satellites had seen soviet vessels in the same area as the taps meaning that the Soviets had found out about them some believe that possibility they got the info from Aldrich Ames.

By the way what kind of Ford Mustang do you own?If I had the money for a trim one I'd have a 1968 428 Cobrajet.I bet that my little project 1973 Datzun 240Z with 3.1 stroker would give you a run and my 72 with her dual SUs would put a smile on your face she sounds and looks pretty good and scoots too.:up:

Diving depths for modern subarines are usually around 500 meters or 1500 feet. I searched for some data for subs still in use today:

Akula - 480 m operational depth, 600 m test depth

Los Angeles - 950 ft (290 m)

Seawolf - 2,000 feet (610 m)

Virginia - 800 feet (240 m)

Kilo - 800 feet (240 m)

Oscar - couldn't find any data!

Typhoon - 400 m (1,300 ft)

Type 209 - 500 m

Dolphin (german) - At least 200 metres (660 ft)

Type 214 - 250m (400m theoretical)

Of course, that applies only to combat subs. Other kinds of descent vessels - say bathyscaphes for instance - can go a lot deeper and one even managed to sink 11.000 meters in 1960 all the way to the bottom of the mariana trench!

Don't forget Dolphin class is also an Israeli submarine! (but yes made in Germany)

I read that the Oscar submarine can dive to 300M or more.. I guess it's kept secret. Remember the Kursk which sank in 2000 was a Oscar, and foreign search teams weren't allowed near it.

Dolphin is being made with export in mind, as the 209 was decades ago. As I understand it there is already one operating for italy. It is supposed to be revolutionary. Have you seen a picture of one?

Israel is indeed very ecletic when it comes to military equipment. In the late 40s they were even using ME-109s and STUGs!

Currently 3 Dolphin submarines are in service in the world, all with the Israeli Navy. The first was built in 1998 (INS Dolphin) and the second in 1999 (INS Leviatan). Both of these were made in Germany and given to the Navy. A third one was made in 2000 (INS Tekuma), and there's still two more that the Navy want. They needed to replace the old British submarines from the 1970s that the Navy was using.

I think that one of them stays in the Mediterranean, and one is always in the Red Sea, but it's mostly kept secret where they are.

That's true what you say, from Independence up to the 1970s a lot of Israeli weapons was imported, but now has become one of the biggest exporters of equipment.

If you want to dive very deep and fire you torps at whatever depth alter your cfg file on the sub your useing.
