View Full Version : Choosing AA armament

On the odd occasion when I decide to stay up and take on attacking aircraft I usually go to flank speed, turn broadside on to the threat and try to remain in this position until deciding my next move.
I usually keep a mix of 37mm and 20mm armament, even when the option of replacing the 37mm with faster firing 20mm becomes available.
Comments please.

I trust you have the new 'Ejecting Pilots' mod...

My armament of choice is two 2cm C38 Zwilling and the 3.7cm M42 Zwilling. I've only gotten that far into the war once.
Until then, I usually stick with LOTS of 2cm.

"Aircraft Spotted!"= C key. :03:
But if for some reason I was unable to dive and had to fight it out, a dual 20mm(probably a quad when it became available) and a 37mm AA gun would probably be my standard fitting.
I'm in mid to late '43 with a couple of careers(nearing 1/44 in one of them) and aircraft are becoming more than a nuisance so I may have to look deeper into what AA guns to mount.
I don't know if the game models slower diving times with all those extra guns topside. If so, I guess you have to balance the pros and cons.

I don't think so. I've never seen any difference on dive time. Deck gun, little AA, big AA... I've timed it and there's been no significant difference.

I prefer to dive in any case. Engaging the enemy with the AAA guns I do just in the case I can`t dive in time as the risk of a damaged boat and killed crewmen is very very high. Especially in a campaign settled in the mediterranean sea I had to pay a very high price for non diving.
And just look on the real U-441 called U Flak, which was equipped with two 2 cm Vierling and a single 3,7 cm. It lost 10 men when it tried to fight of an attack.

I keep whatever comes with the boat.
Never fought a plane, unless my oxygen was at it's limits, and then only briefly.
Whether it's moddled in the sim or not, I don't know, but I prefer the less visible and smaller towers. So, I prefer a deck mounted 37 mm (For emergency use only).
Not an issue early war (39-40) but later whenever I have danced with aircraft bad-bad things tend to happon. I use the AA against small boat and as a final defense against patrol craft if I can't dive. otherwise dive deep, fast and pray! - Garry
Wast of time taking on Aircraft, better off having fun shooting at ships as your crew man the Deck Gun and you on the AA Guns. :DL

I too have crash diving as the first option when an aircraft is spotted.
In the case that diving is not an option (loading external torps) two double 20mm will do the job.
Late in 1944 when the M42 zwilling becomes available then I use it.
I always remove the single 3,7 cm heavy flak of the early IXB and IXCs

Quite nicely I might add... :yep:

It is always a gamble staying surfaced and going head to head with aircraft...the odds are stacked against you.
If you feel that you must for whatever reason then the twin 37mm is your most effective AA weapon.
