View Full Version : 3rd Patrol

Just started playing TMO 2.0 and was having a tough time finding targets the first 2 patrols. The second patrol only netted two fishing boats (pretty sad).

The third patrol started the same way. I went to the designated areas but found nothing to shoot at. Sat off of Tokoyo and finally sank two merchants. I received reports of TF's but could not chase them down. Decided to head back as fuel was getting low when sonar picked up on a warship. I went to the bridge and found that it was raining hard and visibility was 0 at night. I followed sonar contacts and it shaped up to be a convoy. Since I had no radar I had to chase them using sound.

Then while looking at the chart I get a report of "ship spotted" so I jump back to the bridge and find myself looking at the stern of a merchant about 200 yards away. I back off a little and take a shot, missed (too close). Backed off farther and lose contact. I shoot again where I think he is and get a hit. I fire last two and miss both.

Now there are star shells firing every where but with the rain and night they don't see me and it's hard for me to see them. There are search lights on both sides of me but nothing is locked on me yet. I know there are DD's out there looking for me and I'm right in the middle of this convoy. What a nervous rush.

Just then a light locks onto me. Oh crap! I'm waiting for that big blast of a DD but only receive small arms fire. Deck crew "Fire at Will". They start to hammer the merchant as I open some distance to get out of their lights. More star shells. A DD fires blind at me from somewhere and the sound is eerie.
I jump on the deck gun as my crew losses contact and start shooting at the shape in the darkness. I get another report of "ship spotted". What, where? I look to the port and there's another merchant stern right next to me. I let the gun crew take over as I turn to starboard and cut speed to move away. This time their guns take out one of my crew on the gun. I replace him with my AA gunner.

Back on the bridge I do a quick scan around and spot a shape behind me with a steady searchlight looking left and right but with the rain I don't know what it is but I have a good idea. I head to the night scope and line up my last two stern torp's on the light and take the shot. I head back to the bridge and increase speed to full. My gun crew locks onto the starboard ship again and begins to fire. The rain has let up a little and its easier to see but there is still some fog. The port ship is not a factor anymore right now and there are no lights on me. So far so good. I look back in time to see a small fireball and the searchlight goes out. Then a large blast to the right and I swing around to see the merchant go up in flames.

I go to flank and decide maybe it's time to get out while my luck holds and I again come upon the starboard merchant. I can't help it. I cut speed and take the guns but stay out of their range. I fire around 20 or 30 rounds and he goes up too. This time I make a run for it.

When I finally reach safety I see that I bagged two merchants and one DD. I had several wounded and one KIA. Thank God for foul weather and night. I needed a beer after that but had none inboard.

What a Mod. And I almost scrapped this game because the vanilla version sucked so bad. I know it might sound corny but this is what really makes a great game when it sparks excitement, nervousness and leaves you a little
drained. This sure beats the two fishing boats from patrol two!

Storms are great to make attacks, just be careful later war ships may have radar and they'll use it to run right up your stern. You can still stay surfaced and run them around, but eventually they'll get close, so I dive, let them pass and pop back up.

TMO is a great mod..

If you will go to the captains cabin, you will find some beer stored under the bunk!

Yeah, early war can be a little frustrating when it comes to finding targets, especially depending on which home base you start from. The W/SW Pacific seems to be a hotbed early on. Things start to move eastward from there. Nice job infiltrating the ranks of that convoy. Bet you sure caused some confusion for the escorts.:salute:
Welcome abroad.:D

Thanks, it's nice to be part of the crew. It was a little confusing for me too because it was raining so hard at the start. But it was so much fun.

And thanks for the tip on the beer!

When I first started playing this game I use to say" darn, the weather is terrible." Now I say "darn the weather is too good."

Bad weather is your friend. :know:

Congrats on a good battle, sounds like you're having fun. :yeah:

Great write up. My heart was pounding just reading that.

That's the way SH4 is. Sometimes it is so boring that you want to dump the game, and then you get a battle like that and it is all worth it. :salute:
