I just found Sh3Gen in the stickied Newbie post. It seems interesting, and I'm thinking of trying it, but it is fairly old.

The documentation says it should work with any mod, so I assume (read: hope) that isn't an issue. I'm wondering if anyone still uses it.
If so, is there anything I should know about how it works/doesn't work? Like for instance it has a ship names generator. I'm assuming that those names wouldn't match up with the names Commander makes, and I should disable it.

I'm running the game through Commander with GWX, OLC and a few smaller mods, if that matters at all.

I use it all the time, which for me means once per patrol. Like Commander it is an external tool that works outside the game, and thus does indeed work with any mod.

Not at all. SH3Gen does not give names to ships you've sunk, but gives names to reported warships.

What it does is to generate a report of what's going on in the world. It has two separate sliders. The first governs how much intelligence you recieve. Set it for 100% and it will tell you where every ship in the game is at that moment. The stock setting of 30% works very well for me, especially as I don't act on it, but just use it for immersion. The second slider controls how accurate the information is. Yes, you can have it lie to you. :rotfl2::rock:

The 'Ship Names' function gives names to the warships it reports. Turn it on and it will report HMS Prince Of Wales in Portsmouth harbor. Turn it off and it will report King George V class. Of course if you sink the ship Commander might name it HMS Anson.

Nope, doesn't matter a bit. :sunny:

Awesome. I tried it out and like it. For some reason it said there was an iceberg in Lorient, of all places.

One weird thing is, and matbe this is because I tried it on a save mid-patrol, but it gave me orders to rendezvous with some ship in BC, when I'm patrolling in BF.

Or maybe it was thrown off by the fact that my patrol quadrant was one that doesn't exist. For some reason the game gave me orders to go to BF10. Why would it do that? There is no "10".

It's a known bug...

No need to fret as GWX doesn't award renown based on patrol quadrant.

Yep, I knew that. I'm trying to follow orders for the fun of it, though.

Thing is, these new orders from SH3gen would have me going way out into the Atlantic to meet this merchant. I don't think I have the fuel to get back. Would the merchant be able to refuel me, you think? I at least know it's probably there, as there's a merchant marked with plus signs, rather than minuses, in that quadrant.

I don't know what boat you have, but a VII or "better" should give you 33,000 km or more in fuel range, if you cruise at the recommended 8knts. More than enough to get to mid Atlantic and back.

If you do need a top-up, supply boats are marked in blue.

And the SH3Gen instructions are solely for immersion.

Yeah, I use ahead 2/3 as my cruising speed, and only go faster for intercepts and flanking contacts, that way I never have range problems for Atlantic patrols in my VIIB.

If you use a type II you might aswell stay in the North Sea, generally you tend to expend all your torps before its short range becomes an issue anyway. I like them for the reason that patrols in a type II are short in real life time aswell as in game time.

Weird, I'm in a VIIB, and I thought my navigator had given my range as significantly less than that while on 2/3rds. Is his estimate, perhaps, a radius?

I made a typo, I mean't 1/3 which will give you about 10knots in calm seas and a range of 21000KM.

If you carefully manage your speed with the speedo rather than the telegraph and keep it at 8kts like Mr Roasted says, then you do indeed get a range of 30000KM+ in the VIIB.

The numbers look so big because the distances in game are actually almost double what they are in real life. So gwx has adjusted your U-Boat's range accordingly.

Who exactly are you aiming that at? The last post in this thread was a year ago.

The front page of Global Explorer's website has been missing for the past few years. But this particular page with downloads is still available, albeit hidden.

Fair enough. I apologize for overreacting. :sunny:
