I swear there was a Portal 2 thread, but I can't find it.

Anyways:

Buy one of the games on the list and play it, and you'll help release Portal 2 early on steam. Right now it's set to release in 3.75 days. Which is Tuesday.

I'm having a ball with it so far. GLaDOS is very, very pissed. I love her little passive aggressive comments between test chambers.

Indeed he is!

And Cave Johnson's voice is PERFECT. "I say: Why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are FIRED!"

Just beat it. Fantastic. Now I just need volunteers for the Co-op portion.

Anyone see the Super 8 interactive trailer?

Pretty neat. At first I thought it was another valve game in the works.

Edit: According to steam it took me 6 hours. But I think the real amount of time is closer to 7.
EDIT2: and according to the the achievements I've missed some things.

You and or Nagy and or Lady Keab needs to hurry up and beat Portal 2 so I can play Co-op.

This game's singleplayer was just wonderful. Had an absolute blast, especially with the banter between the dueling GLaDOS and Wheatley. I beat it in about 5 hours and I have to say it was one of the most enjoyable singleplayer experiences I've ever had. Now to get to work on that co-op!

Wait, they're selling it boxed for PC as well? 20% cheaper you say? Well, see, that's more like it.

Honestly, thought this was Steam-only unless you wanted it for PS3 or something. That makes it a lot more attractive. :)

Just had to record this, but it's a massive spoiler unless you played through the game (turret testing bit; template, response). Only a small section of the game, but still.

I just don't get it. I got Portal when it was free on Steam and forced myself through its tedious puzzles and endless tutorial mode, thinking that sooner or later I would get to the great game that everyone apparently loved. And then it ended and I realised that what I had mistaken for a boring and overlong tutorial was the whole freaking game.

And now they've done it again and everyone loves it again.

You are all weird. All of you. I am the only normal person left in the world.

So nothing you see or hear in there makes you laugh?

And yes, that's the whole point. The puzzles can be rewarding to solve, but if that was all there was to it, it wouldn't have sparked such interest. People know Portal not because it's a good puzzler, but because of GLaDOS, Weighted Companion Cube, cake and the party escort submission position.

Or maybe we're all just affected by neurotoxin, who knows?

* oh, turrets! Everybody loves turrets.

In the first one? No. Well, Glados made me chuckle at the start but her humour became predicatble after the first couple of rooms. And I was properly dumbfounded to learn that people had some kind of fondness for the companion cube. I mean, it's a box.

I gather the sequel has more dialogue, but I've not bought it and don't intend to.

Portal is hardly the first popular game I've disliked (Halo games, CoD games, Bioshock) but usually I can at least appreciate why everyone else likes a game even when I don't. But Portal? Really, I just don't get it. It's just three hours of laborious training to explain a concept that can be learned in three seconds: you go in here, you come out there.

I'm right there with you on those other titles, just not Portal. It's safe to say I have a fairly corny sense of humour. I think that's it: it either connects or it doesn't. If you're not a fan of the humour then it falls apart.

I wouldn't consider the puzzles laborious, they aren't challenging enough for that. Which again underscores that it is everything else that caries the game. I love it for it's dialogue and characters.

The cube... think it is because the game implies a bond. GLaDOS commenting on not listening to it should it speak to you, which she assures you it can not. And having to incinerate it after it "helped" you through the stage, getting further comments on the act. People arent actually attached to the companion cube, they just roll with the game's implication of one. It's a result of immersion, one of the things Valve always manage in their titles.

It is fun.

Dowly and Arc don't like Half Life 2, and that's a great game.

@Onelifecrisis:
Your opinion on Portal 1 is well placed, the game was pretty much intended to be a tech demo that ended up shipping with the Orange box. No one really went out to buy Portal 1 by itself(and it wasn't available by itself anywhere else but steam). People bought the orange box for HL2, EP1-2, and TF2, and got hooked on the unique gameplay of Portal 1, and the humor.

In my opinion Portal 2 goes above and beyond what Portal 1 was, by actually having a story, and increasing the number and challange of puzzles. There were times where I stopped and scratched my head while contemplating a puzzle. Throw in a Co-op mode with it's whole side story and puzzles that actually require both of you to think, and you have a game worth the retail price. The humor is also Grade A.

Finally got around beating the game and it was gooooood. Definitely improvement from Portal 1 for the reasons Spike88 mentioned above. Wheatley was just great, always had me laughing when he was rambling about. Only bit I REALLY didn't like was the middle of the game, but other than that, it was solid fun.

As for you liking the portal gameplay... it's a matter of taste thing. I never managed to like the repetitive and incredibly shallow original Sims game, but it seems everyone else on the whole planet loved it for some reason:-?. I love the RTT genre (Ground Control, World in Conflict, etc.), while others hate it because for them the whole fun of RTS games is building cities.

I just finished the game. 5 stars IMO. The humor was great, and I really liked the new gameplay mechanics that were introduced. What happens with Glados after the first act is absolutely hilarious.

I had to resort to a walkthrough for the 16/19 chamber, but I figured out all the others without help (eventually).

Well, this perhaps goes some way towards making up for the whole over-priced robot hats thingy. Official word has just arrived in our inbox from Valve that the first full-on DLC for the lovely Portal 2 will be free (on all platforms), and promises “new test chambers for players, leaderboards, challenge mode for single and multiplayer modes, and more.” That news again: free. The list of planned content also suggests there’ll be something a little more challenging than in the main game (the arguable ease and signposting of which we had a slight but affectionate moan about in our verdict yesterday), and a chance to really push Portal 2′s crazy physics as far as they’ll go.

Some of those puzzles were fiendish. I hate using walkthroughs, but I admit I did need some help on a two of the chambers.

I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on the ARG thing. I think they actually intended on releasing the game early, but set the gameplay requirements too high on the whole potato power thing.

As far as the robot hats and skins and stuff, that's a good thing. The for-sale DLC doesn't affect the gameplay at all. They're selling DLC that isn't a new level, or a new character or mission or something that should have been included out of the box. Those types of things they're giving away for free. I really respect that.

Arclight
04-30-11, 11:12 AM
Aye, just saying it's not so "free" as it first apears. ;)

Kinda remarkable how things switched around though. We used to get the useless stuff for free, as unlockables in a game (darn sight better than those empty "achievements" imho). More content, that we had to pay for in the form of expansions.

Nowadays expansions have largely been broken up into bite-sized DLC and the purely cosmetic stuff is being sold as well. If they have extra bits laying around, such as Valve in this case, it usually gets packaged and sold as day-1 DLC. Sometimes it's released for free though, quite a number of devs do that.

Still a little twisted that overall we end up paying for things that used to be free.

I spent four hours with glados, and my trusty portal gun this weekend. I figured all the chambers out myself and then got stuck on the final boss, i finished the game up. Gotta say I loved it, some challenges in the game if you're going in completely cold having not replayed Portal 1 to get ready but nothing that cant be finished without persistence and patience.

Looking forward to giving coop a go and then the DLC to extend the play time. Really loved the humour in this one too. More so than Portal 1.

Portal was very fun, and Portal 2 was awesome too! GLaDOS is the coolest robot, so funny. I think the only thing that kind of made me go ":hmmm:" was the whole talking-in-space concept; I'm being a stick in the mud about that, but nonetheless was a great game. My boyfriend bought it for himself and me for my birthday and we played a co-op marathon! Very fun, and makes you really think and put concepts in perspective.

I loved the ending cinematic, it's my desktop wallpaper. AND companion cube! That thing is purely awesome.
