View Full Version : Torps running under DD Keels
I've noticed that I can't seem to hit escorts. I've had several torps run right under the keel even when the torp depth is set to the shallowest setting.
Any ideas? I know one of them was a V&W Destroyer. In the SOAN it says it's draft is about 3.5m. Should be well deep enough for a torp set at 1m to hit. But it doesn't. Once I suspected something was wrong I went to external cam to confirm. I could see it go directly under the keel every time.
The only mods that might be interfering with this that I'm running are; IRAI, FXupdate or NewUIs.

"Normal", or better: historically correct. The magnetic fuses did not work (especially in northern latitudes), as well the depth settings did not work. Best think is to use impact detonator, and setting the depth to 1 meter. Certainly difficult to hit a destroyer when its bow or stern is directed at you boat, since an impacting torpedo will bounce off the hull if the angle is sharp enough.

Every torpedo I fired was set to "impact". The Destroyers had not detected me and were more or less at 90 angle to my heading. So my only guess is that the torpedoes (electric if it matters) are running deeper than the 1m I set them to.
Has anyone ever hit one of these small - mid sized destroyers?
Trevally.

When setting torp depth remember and allow for the depth error.
Torps run 1m deeper than you set.

Torpedo type matters the most! I found that itīs impossible to hit a DD using the G7e (through my humble experience and evidence colected on this boards). On the other hand, the good old G7a will impact on DDīs everytime (provided you actually hit the thing:O:), you donīt even need to change the depth settings  .

The "e" is the electric I presume?
I'll try the "a" from now on when attacking escorts.
Trevally, I had the depth set to 1m so I'm thinking the G7e must run more than 2.5m deeper than you set it. The escort was 3.5m draft, my torp was set to 1m...it still ran under.

I just watched convoy , war in the atlantic . Torps ran under the keel of dds . They sit too shallow in the water .

Yes it does appear there is something wrong:salute:
I am just posting a link to a thread (the only one I know off) where torp depth has been measured using an accurate tool.
The tool is there for downloading if anyone wants to measure things:yep:

"e" for elektrisch actually:03:. Try and see what happens, the only problem with G7a is the tell-tale bubbles it leaves behind.
