Ahoy fellow sailors. After a long foray into other game genres I want to get back into sims. I have always been a flight boy (forgive my insolence, this being a 'wet' forum) and the recent release of the new Il-2 Sturmovik game has made me all giddy in the stomach. The game seems very much to be a work in progress though, with lots of reports about bugs and bad / non-existent optimization.
Which reminded me of the Silent Hunter 5 release (or any SH release for that matter ... :DL). I bought the game last year, but didn't really play it because of the state is was in. The box has been gathering dust for almost a year now so I dug it up again for a weekend of hunting on naval prey. My first port of call for recent information about the game and its mods was of course the Radio Room, but I was kinda unsettled by the sheer amount of mods everyone is using.
I don't mind the vanilla experience that much. I read about the UI mod everybody is raving about in the other newbee thread and that seems to fix my biggest gripe about SH5: the new controls (as in: different from SH3/4). But other than that I am lost. Which mod, if any, should I install? Are there any good compilations that I don't know of?

Hahaha, that long list is exactly what I meant in my OP. It is so daunting. Thanks for the core list though, very helpful. Magnum opus sounds like a compilation. Is that correct?

Yes indeed, MO is a compilation mod. It's at version 0.0.1 beta atm.
It contains older versions of IRIA and NewUI's so make sure you grab the newer versions of these mods, if you do decide to use MO.

Environment 5, newui's and IRAI are included in MO.
But there are newer versions of NewUI's and IRAI availible.
Open Horizons is only needed if you wish to continue after 1943. (not a must have, but definitely recommended).:yep:
NewUI's fixes the stadimeter. Plus greatly improves other features of the UI. And even adds some extra features.:yeah:
The stadimeter does not work correctly in stock game :nope:
IRAI improves the AI of enemy ships.
Depth keeping problems mod, stops the uboat sinking when you go deep.

I just would add Critical Hits for Torpedos as a must have so you won´t need 3/4 torps to sink a single merchant, usually 2 wil suffice and be much more imersive.

Hey all
I'm in the same situation here a bit slowly getting back into sh5 myself.
So far I've already went a bit mod happy but will try the ui mods above since I have yet to find a ui mod that I like.
So my main question is this:
Has anyone ported over any longrange IX type ships yet?
Id love to take the new fx engine over to the gulf of mexico or even down around the cape and into the indian ocean.
Or do I have to go into shIV UBM for that fix?
