I've come to SH3 by way of Ubisoft IL2-CoD and will probably have many months wait for significant upgrade to PC before I can get to play CoD. Never mind. However, I've enjoyed two evenings with SH3/GWX just self training and exercising off the Orkneys; what an atmospheric game!

Anyway, before I give up too much of my life to SH3 I'd like to know whether I can create a multiplay server on my PC, get my friend to link via the internet - and share my U-boat. That is, can we play cooperative missions - both in the same boat? It seems a good way of introducing my chum to SH3, its controls and new experiences.

I've done some checking and fear that it isn't possible.

I don't think it would be.

But I also don't see the point. While the game is complex, there's only so many functions you can perform as a Kaleun, and what would the other player do? Navigate? Run the radio?

I can maybe see a dedicated hydro operator, but other than that, it would just become "SH3 Multi player subs! Now you can share the boredom, err, realism!"

As Gargamel says, I don't think it would be possible for two players to "play" the same u-boat unless they're sitting in front of the same open session of one game installation.

I guess it would be possible with something like PC Anywhere (is that still even a "thing"?) or something similar where another person connects to your computer and can see your desktop and open programs and interact with stuff that your PC is running with their own keyboard and mouse... but in my only experiences with such programs the lag time was so bad that it probably wouldn't be very effective. They probably have better programs for that sort of thing now, but... even so there's really only one interactive role to play in the game, and that's the commander of the boat, so at best you'd either have to take turns or issue orders by committee.

Personally I think the "one queen to a hive, one captain to a ship" rule is always the better way to go. :D

Dangerous Waters has the option of sharing the workload on the same unit in multiplayer. One of you for example takes care of Helm control, Radar, Weapons on the sub/frigate/PC-3 Orion/Seahawk. While the other takes care of sonar, EM sensors, and TMA for example. I've never done it but I guess it makes life alot easier. SH3 definately does not alow this.

Thanks for the prompt responses chaps.

I thought it wasn't possible. I really don't mind doing, say, navigation while my chum plays captain of the boat. (It takes all sorts).

Even so, I'll get much fun out of SH3 as it is.
