I've only got A-10C, and so far very limited time on it, but willing to join in so that you can take the heat off the rest of you guys when I crash :yep:

All I need now is the wife to bring more work home so I get some ME time! :D

Edit: I'll probably splash out on BS next payday! Has anyone seen it for less than £25 (€29) recently?

Edit2: After visiting PC World this morning and seeing it for £24.99, I've just found it for £14.97 on their website.

I only have Ka-50, but yeah I'm up for some flights with that...and I do not mind some practice first...there's still a lot to learn for me as I just know the basic and firing my ordinance still is a bit of a mess need to improve on that.

as for combat missions, I guess after a few practice session we could do small combat missions suitable for the amount of players we have then to test the stuff we practiced in combat situations:06:

I have the A-10 less than a week and a hard time get off the ramp :O:
Still, I´m interested in some fun flights, keeping the A-10 in the air is no problem.

I don't have A-10 because I do not have a proper joystick for it but I'm up for ka-50 flights!

Combat missions are fine for me. I think I've got enough experience for that from several SP missions I've flown.

Raptor1
04-07-11, 12:31 PM
I wouldn't mind flying both, though missions with an objective other than flying around would be preferable. I can decently operate the Ka-50, I think, but I haven't used the A-10C nearly enough to know what I'm doing yet.

Arclight
04-07-11, 12:52 PM
Well I still have that mission I set up for training: convoy aproaching, some airborne whirly-threats and plenty of targets, both defended and sitting duck. Carrier to land on, think I'll add a FARP to land at as well, they can be pretty challenging. :hmmm:

We can start off with that. People who just want to fly a bit can form up and take the scenic route, people who want some action will find plenty of targets.

I'm no editor wonder-boy myself, but perhaps we can find/make some more involving missions, provided there's interest. Personally I always make them with a fair amount of freedom. No fun being pressed into an attack on a strict timelimit while you're still coming to terms with the weapons sytem.

I'm glad to see a positive response. Simply love flying the things, would be even better with some company. God knows I tried whipping the AI into shape, but I'm still more likely to get a mid-air collision than an "affirmative".

Right, here's the deal:

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj2/EZatHome/Uprisingjpg.jpg

Blue area near Adler indicates our base.
Green area N of that is a free-fire zone. You'll find several groups of trucks there to practice on.
Blue area to SE indicates a carrier. It goes along the coast and can be used to resupply.
Blue area to NE indicates a FARP.
Red areas indicate target zones. Objectives are described in the briefing.
There's a friendly convoy that sets off for the enemy airbase in an attempt to capture it. If they succeed, that base should become available to us for resupply. An enemy convoy is doing the same to us, but in practical application ours wipes out theirs, so no worries. Still a good idea to clear a path for those guys, and soften up defenses around the airbase. Extra airfield is nice and, you know, providing CAS is what the Ka-50 is all about.

For just flying, I figured to follow the river departing N, skirting the Georgian border. At the end of it, cross over a ridge and follow another river to the FARP. Should make for interesting piloting.

Load out is 100% fuel with no weapons, save the cannon. Be sure to rearm and take drop tanks or weapons, depending on what you're planning to do. ;)

Was thinking of hosting a flight on a weekly basis, Ka-50 one week and A-10C the next. Focus will be on just flying the thing, at least untill we can get people together that are both capable and interested in flying it into combat.

Basically a ramp start, take-off, low-level scenic flight and a landing. I'll set up basic firing ranges at both the start and end locations, so people who just want to mess around a bit before or after can head over there.

I'm thinking about only setting up the flight lead with a flightplan, so wingmen will have to practice their navigation and formation flying. (not expecting tight formation, just keep in contact with flight lead)

You don't have to be familiar with the weapons deployment, but of course a decent understanding of flying it is desireable. For example, if we fly the Ka-50 over a mountain ridge, it's a good thing to know where the anti-icing switch is at. Also, you don't have to be familiar with airport procedures. For example, if you want to do a rolling take-off and a landing from hover, then that's up to you. Not going to force anyone to stick to exact procedure.

Both TeamSpeak2 and TeamSpeak3 servers are available.

I would suggest Wednesday or Thursday nights, perhaps both if there's enough interest. Could do Ka-50 one night and A-10C the next.

Anyone interested?

I'm in....:salute: PM me

Looks good, I'll be the smoking tangle of metal just off the runway!

Had a quick go of the tutorials yesterday and learnt that you can take off with the canopy open - when I say open, it detaches half-way down the runway. Flight envelope unaffected :yeah:

Alrighty, here's the deal for the A-10C:
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj2/EZatHome/uprising2.jpg

blue for friendly airbase
red for targetzone
green for free-fire zone
the black bit... well, that's a Tor battery. Don't stray to the W from the targetzone and you'll be fine. Just a little something to make you think about ingress and egress points.
Weather is pretty much the same as for the Ka-50 setup.

We had a nice take-off in close formation on the 2nd sortie, but the track goes haywire if you watch PGM being released from external view (only for your aircraft though, other clients are fine. Speeding up time might help to screw it up. Anyway). Managed to grab those before that, but missing some really good stuff.

Dowly

Yeah, speeding up the track might cause it go out of sync. It's kinda like in Silent Hunter; too large TC and stuff fails to keep up.

Task Force and I played a DCS:BS combat mission yesterday which is quite good.

it's called Pandora's Box but the mission is in Spanish, I'll try to translate the best I can and send it to you Arc.

thought there's a minor issue with spawning it seems you can't spawn more then 1 Kamov on the same carrier unless you want to have instant KABLOOIE!

so one has to wait spawning untill the other has taken off.
is that fixable?

anyway the mission has 2 objectives,

Main Objective is a small port with some ships and soft ground targets, the secondary is search & destroy a enemy Farp
enemy air targets to be expected thought.

Well there are groups of kamovs listed taking off from different locations...total of 4 are taking of from 2 carriers, the others on remote helopads/bases I presume.

I think this mission would be excellent to try to fly in couples of 2 (leader & wingmen) and see if we can coordinate with the rest to attack an objective from multiple locations.

Just tinkering. :O:

Added a tanker and a friendly convoy. Friendlies are headed for Sukhumi, the airfield halfway between home and defended practice area. Once they get there, that airfield will be useable. The tanker flies out to sea and then turns towards Sukhumi, flying a race-track patern between those 2 points.

Also changed all the tanks to T-55 and BMP-2 to BMP-1. T-72B is darn hard to crack with the Gau-8/A and BMP-2 is rather lethal against aircraft. Too much so for a training mission I'd say. :)

It is nice trying formation flying, I still need to suss out autopilot to keep a straight and level heading - I'm all over at the minute, as you may be able to tell as it's all hand/eye stuff, which is great until I go to external cam to get a pic!!! I'm suprised I've never hit you in the air. Loved the low level through the valleys the other week :yeah:

I'm relatively easy now (oi!) as PC is now out of stepson's room in the main family room, so I don't have to wait till he's at his dad's Wed-Sat to be able to play! :D As long as it's night time, I should be ok.

Would be nice indeed. As powerfull as the Avenger is, it's a pain to actually use against tanks. That leaves you with PGMs to get the job done, or CBU-97/105. Getting a plain old Mk-82 on target is tricky. Ka-50 flight would be a good thing to hunt out those tanks then.

Our tanker heads out to take up station.

I had been mucking around for a while, harassing the enemy airfield. Berbunch signs on a bit later and takes off to join me there.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj2/EZatHome/DCS%20A-10C/Screen_110721_234133.jpg
Cluster bombs: if you want to hit more than you're aiming for.

Eventually I took some damage trying to hit some AAA with the Avenger. Just a few holes, but it knocked out a MFCD so I figured I'd bug out and RTB, fuel was running low anyway.

I set her down at homeplate and taxi to a parking. Berbunch had beaten me to homeplate in the usual fashion :O:, so I got to enjoy watching another take-off.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj2/EZatHome/DCS%20A-10C/Screen_110722_004557.jpg
I remember commenting "and I thought I was safe here". Little did I know, those words would ring all the more true not much later.

So I'm repaired, rearmed and refueled and preparing to fire the engines back up, when I hear the scream of a pair of turbofans, getting closer. I figured "just another flyby", and since I was busy I didn't look up. Suddenly the aircraft rocks and ends up leaning right a bit. The master caution was blaring too, and I thought to myself "that must have been a close pass".

When I look up, the T-handle for the left engine is flashing. "Engine fire?" I thought, and looked to my left. First thing I noticed was part on the left wing was gone, with flames gushing out the end of what was left of it. So I lean out a bit and get a look at the engine, realising it has seen better days as well and why the master caution is nagging me.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj2/EZatHome/DCS%20A-10C/Screen_110722_005039.jpg
"The ram attack is the weapon of heroes."

So I jank the pulsing T-handle, discharge a bottle of extinguisher and call my chief over. We agreed a case of beer and some scotch would be sufficient compensation for his troubles.

Just another thursday at Senaki.

My initial configuration was with GBU-31/38 JDAMs but just got hung stores so jettisoned and used cannon. That and cluster bombs FTW :yeah:

And Mavericks when I can be bothered. :-?

Arclight
08-05-11, 07:12 AM
Aye you get hung store if you make a mistake in delivery. Not that hard to clear though, provided you're reasonably familiar with the systems. (ie. orbit on autopilot and alt-tab to the manual. )

Herr-Berbunch
08-05-11, 07:21 AM
I have guides printed out for delivering most of the weapons, ILS, TACAN, etc., but not for clearing hung stores.

In case you're wondering why I'm still crap if I've got the guides to hand - I'm impatient and lazy and think I can just pick and choose the bits to read... ends up with hungs stores, apparantly. :hmmm:

Autopilot - haven't even seen which panel it's located on yet. :D So that's how you fly straight and level so often.

Arclight
08-05-11, 07:50 AM
Indeed. :yep:

It's also how I manage my targeting: fly to a point some 10 miles from the target area, bank and engage altitude-hold. Plane keeps a level bank while you tinker with the TGP, finding and presumably marking targets.

There's a control, "HOTAS left throttle button" to engage/disengage the AP. Additionally:

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj2/EZatHome/Screen_110805_143759.jpg

Switch:

PATH: holds whatever attitude you set. Handy during climbs and descents.

ALT/HDG: Holds altitude and heading. Straight and level.

ALT: Holds altitude and bank. Bank the aircraft and engage to enter hands-off orbit, leaving you free to tinker with whatever needs tinkering with.

The button is a duplicate of the throttle button (other way around, technically).

Changing the switch setting with the AP engaged does not take effect untill you disengage and then re-engage the AP. Say you're orbiting after engaging 'alt' and you set it to 'alt/hdg'; plane will continue to orbit. Push the button once to turn it off and again to turn it back on and it should transition to straight and level.

Actually, don't think 'alt/hdg' engages unless the nose is within ~5deg of level, not sure if bank affects it like that as well. :hmmm:

*right, hung store:

1- Reload station from INV.

2- From STAT page, power off and then power off the FAIL station in red.

3- When the station green, go to DTS page and reload ALL.
Could clear that up a bit with a vid or some screenies if desired.

Same here; turns out that in .9 you can't clear a hung JDAM anymore. Ditch it or bring it home, but you won't be releasing it that flight.

And yes, that's more realistic. No way to do it in the real thing.

hawk2495
08-08-11, 11:33 AM
I'm surprised I haven't seen a whole lot of whining about that in the ED forums yet. So many people want such realistic sim, but when the devs bring it to the point of being almost real, i.e. random system failures, bird strikes, all they do is complain. I actually like all of that stuff. It makes me work harder as a "pilot" which is what I enjoy. I tried it in game mode once... For about two minutes..... Back to sim mode it was...lol

Ironically that was what I was having the most problems with last night, trying to get the damn things to fire, the standard dumb rockets...I guess the Russian version of the Hydra, I can fire just fine...but the guided missiles just didn't want to go. :damn: Will have to practice later at dialing these things up whilst hovering...I need an extra pair of arms... :yep:

Herr-Berbunch
08-09-11, 08:29 AM
I can't hover, well I can - manually, but auto-hover just tips me up or spins me out even with little or no directional speed. And then in manual hover I try for an external view and *oops* R/Ctrl+R/Shift+Tab :D:nope:.

Last week all I could fire was a flare! Then laying in bed later it hit me, Master Arm switch you dumbf:damn:, I'd been so preoccupied with manual low flying that on my rare foray into the buttons I'd done all correctly apart from the one major one that stares you in the face!

I don't even know what wpns I'm choosing half the time (more than!), common sense dictates that ATGMblahblah is Anti-Tank Guided Missile, but the rest...? :nope:

Anyhoo, you seem to be nowhere near my crash rate - well done :yeah: (or it's just selective screenshots?)

FYI this is just an hour or so flying around the airfield -

Thing to note is that most Russian aircraft have a system where you need authorization to fire. The Vikhrs for example won't fire unless the range is between 7.2 and 1.5 (iirc) km, and the targeting reticle (large circle to indicate where missile is looking) is overlaid over the Shkval reticle (small circle indicating where Shkval is looking).

The Vikhr has amazing accuracy, but absolutely no tolerance for less-than-ideal launch conditions (it's a beam-rider, proper alignment is critical). The launcher will take care of the pitch, but you need to turn the whole helo on target to line up the shot.

A 'C' will appear on the Shkval display, and I think in the HUD to indicate launch authority. You can override it and get a more American "fire whenever you damn well please" system. Switch is on the center panel, 2 or 3 rows below the master arm.

Also, take note of any countdowns in the HUD (left side). These relate to the laser and are best adhered to (ie. let it count down to 0), or you risk busting the laser after a while of misuse. It needs about 8-9secs of cool-down after ranging and another countdown happens when the laser is guiding (ie. Vikhr launched).

Oberon

Gotcha, I'll have to boot her up and have a spin around the range for a bit, and see what I can do.

I miss the Hellfire, pop up from behind hill, designate target, drop back down, select HIBAL or LOBAL...I can't remember which, and then up and over she goes. :damn:

Doesn't the Black Shark have a target tracking system like the Apache?

Dowly
08-09-11, 10:22 AM
BTW, Arc, any idea if it would be possible to use datalink to lob rockets from
behind a small hill for example? Or is full visual & lasing needed? :hmmm:

Arclight
08-09-11, 11:13 AM
Rockets or missiles? Vikhrs, not a chance. Rockets... possibly. But it would require an arcing trajectory, and rockets tend to be useless even when flying "straight".
Doesn't the Black Shark have a target tracking system like the Apache?
You can store targets easily enough, but again, the Vikhr is a beam-rider, so LOAL isn't an option. The system won't let you fire without a lock to begin with unless you override it.

To store targets, lock them up (laser on so you get a range) and push one of the type buttons on the datalink panel (top-left, right below overhead panel. 'ground target', 'air defense', 'other' or 'point of interest') then the 'send-mem' button to store.

If you then reset the targetting system (backspace), you can push the type buttons to cycle through stored targets (see the selected one flashing on ABRISS). Combine that with a wingman number or 'all' and then 'send' to share targets or points of interest over datalink.

Also, if you have it all neutral (Shkval caged - "backspaced"), you can use
'DL ingress' and select a stored target and then uncaging Shkval ("O" iirc) to have it immediatly center view on that target (make sure HMS is inactive, or it pans to what you're looking at instead, I think). Combine it with 'auto turn to target' function to quickly line up shots on stored targets. Just remember to let the laser cool after locking them up. :D

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj2/EZatHome/DCS%20Ka-50/ScreenShot_001e.jpg

I'll try to make better use of it next time we play, just press 'send-mem' when you recieve something to accept, pops up on ABRISS.

Yeah, rockets. The DL sends range data to the targeting computer?

Arclight
08-09-11, 11:37 AM
Think you would need to lock it up first. Only way I know to offset rocket reticle is by setting Shkval to gunsight mode, putting the reticle on target and then lasing. Reticle is then updated after a few seconds and displaced to account for the range.

Might be possible to get a range with Shkval before switching it to gunsight mode, dunno.

Again though, at ranges where rockets arc sufficiently they are bloody useless. You need to spam them from even the shortest ranges, trying to "snipe" by firing off pairs is too unreliable against anything but targets that can't fire back.

As you add the shortcut to steam, it looks something like this (SP mode):

Target:
"D:\Program Files (x86)\Eagle Dynamics\Ka-50\bin\x86\stable\launcher.exe"

Start in:
"D:\Program Files (x86)\Eagle Dynamics\Ka-50\bin\x86\stable\"Change the "Start in" parameter to read:

"D:\Program Files (x86)\Eagle Dynamics\Ka-50\"For multiplayer, do the same for the "Start in" parameter and change the "Target" parameter, so it looks like this:

"D:\Program Files (x86)\Eagle Dynamics\Ka-50\bin\x86\stable\simulator.exe" -net gui

"D:\Program Files (x86)\Eagle Dynamics\Ka-50\:salute:

Not to worry, I don't have a great deal of free time - late Wed/Thurs are set aside specifically. Occasionally I'd have an hour or so to play with and it'd be nice to know if you're up and running without having to start the MP client first.

As well as the first FC iirc. One of those carries the evil Starforce version, had some trouble with that on W7 64b, got it to work though (despite loud protest from the OS itself, think it was saying the drivers were incompatible. Guess I downloaded the latest drivers from Starforce directly). Note I have the discs though, digital versions may not carry it.

Not a clue how well it works with BS. Never tried yet.

*hmm don't see mention of requiring the old FC. Guess you don't need that then.

Note also that you don't have to instdall "on top" of LOMAC - I would

fullfill contractual obligations to UbiSoft.

Tinkered with the A-10 training scenario a bit, has a proper objective now:

A friendly convoy is en-route to Sukhumi-Babushara to establish a forward base. Provide CAS and use the new airfield to launch a strike against the airbase at Guduata.

- take-off from Senaki.

- provide CAS against targets at Sukhumi-Babushara.

- strike at enemy targets at Gudauta. Prioritize heavy armor.

- free-fire zone at the abandoned airfield S of Kobuleti airfield.

! SA-15 battery is present W of Gudauta airfield, on the edge of Lidzava. Do NOT wander too far W of the target area, plan your ingress and egress.

Should take the convoy about 1-1,5 hour to get there.

Also added a dozen T-55s to the free-fire zone, spread out in the open fields N of the abandoned airfield. The idea is to practice using the Avenger against heavy armor, which is pretty tricky. Careful though; they may not be very adept at defending against airborne threats, but they do shoot back.
