Geolocation is a rather secret feature of some browsers and toolbars. It allows the creator of that program to get a fix on the location of your computer to within a few meters of where you actually live. So this looks like it's dependent on googles harvesting of wi-fi points?
So if your router isn't wi-fi?

Then they can't triangulate it and have to resort to the regular IP trace, I guess.

Not as accurate, but plenty accurate for marketing purposes.
