Is it worth making the trip?
Given the traffic via the Panama Canal it seems such a tempting area...

I'd say. There's probably a reason the Ubootwaffe called Operation Drumbeat "Happy Times". A search on those two topics would probably give you the results you're looking for.

Yes. It's tanker central in GWX. Hang out around Haiti and you'll bag a ton of them.

Maybe a little, but best to avoid shore leave and stay on the boat - just in case. :D

Put some Jimmy Buffett on the gramaphone, break out the boat drinks for the crew, and enjoy the parade of unescorted tankers while they last.
The trip over can be a drag though. TC is your friend.

Go slow, 8 knots on your way over. Budget your fuel to hit Newfoundland or the canaries on your way back and hook up with those supply ships. Then you can return to the Caribbean, then return directly to base.
A type IX should be able to make it round trip on her own though.

I was going to say "But watch out for the blimps", because the US Navy has K-Ships patrolling the area. You beat me to it, and when you said "watch out for falling debris" I figured you were talking about the blimps bombing you, which they will.

Get yourself a Type IX/C, which has the fuel range to get you there and back without re-supplying, but also has a larger supply of torpedo's so more can be sunk:arrgh!:.

It's worth it.
Hang around ED94, ED95, ED96. (Just north of Port Of Spain).
You'll have heavy tanker traffik but, you'll also be very close to 2 naval, and air bases.
The tankers run fast, and there is much ASW activity, so it's best to keep a low profile.
Any of the IX classes will make the round trip without resupply.
If not, somebody is doing something very wrong.

Almost all are fast US flagged tankers.
These guys run north of The Azores, then straight for the south of England.
Eventualy, you'll see the USN escorting fast convoys of these tankers.
And they aren't cheap with the escorts either.
