Woman Trapped in Sinkhole, Throws Cellphone for Help in Miraculous Rescue
You might say Clara Chapman had an ace in the hole.
The 47-year-old Plant City, Fla., resident's cellphone and quick thinking saved her from certain disaster when she suddenly plummeted into a sinkhole while gardening in her backyard Monday morning.
Within seconds, the 5-foot-7-inch Chapman says she was "totally submerged" within the 7-foot hidden trap, Tampa Bay's WTSP reports (http://www.wtsp.com/news/topstories/article/184072/250/Woman-rescued-after-swallowed-by-sinkhole-).
Luckily, Chapman had her cellphone handy, and after several futile attempts at calling for help -- service just isn't that great underground -- she dialed 911 and tossed the phone onto the grass hoping someone would respond.
