The government is proposing to Parliament that Sweden will send eight Gripen planes to Libya. The Bill was passed since NATO arrived with a formal request. A total of 130 will participate in the operation of up to three months' time.

This is a great chance for the Saab JAS 39 Gripen to prove itself

Hang about! Sending Grippens TO Libya? Not somewhere near Libya to enforce the UN Security Council Resolution 1973?

Whose side are they on?

Whose side are they on? It is the first time since 1961 (Congo) and Swedish fighter jets deployed in armed circumstances, an effort was made for the UN from 1961 to 1963 during the Congo Conflict, and they send A-29 B Saab fighter

I think Berbunch was more referring to "sending to Lybia" like giving the planes to Gadaffi rather then to use them with the NATO forces.;)

Is it? Against what...? :D Air defence system on the ground is taken out, no enemy fighters are to be feared - and where they would be stupid enough to dare going up, they soon would go down again - they are too old.

Old? Performance, etc, compare with any other plan that is under the current relationship for a long time so there are few, if any, which have better properties, it thought you knew that :stare:

He meant the Libyan aircraft are too old to be a match for the Gripen or any other Nato aircraft and therefore it can't proof itself as there is simply no true opposition to it.;)

Then again, occasionally the old fighter splashes the top of the line one. (http://www.britains-smallwars.com/korea/seafurydogfight.html) :03:

Gripen is welcomed by NATO, it said NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

We are accustomed to participating countries with certain restrictions. Our military commanders are accustomed to dealing with such, "he said at a press conference in Stockholm today.

My apologies, if only 10 exist, my next question is why build them at all? How much money are they a piece? I thought my nation was stupid militarily when it comes to acquisition.

Seriously, why not buy 30 MiG 29s.

Seriously, why not buy 30 MiG 29s. Sweden has been producing its own fighter planes for a very long time, they airplanes that will participate are from the Nordic Battlegroup, there are enough, then more of a 10 pieces of course read the previous entries in the thread, and be dependent on other countries to a greater extent also the MiG is not at all the same flexibility as Jas,more than two hundred Jas has been built

In order to maintain the no-fly zone over Libya carrying the Swedish JAS Gripen plan the weapons needed to solve the task.

This means that the Armed Forces means ammunition for the gun, heat-seeking and radar-guided missiles and precision bombs. In terms of precision bombs, they are only for use against air defense on the ground in a self defense situation.
