Does that game have forced PvP? I've never liked mmo games where I can be forced to PvP someone.
Why would you even play an MMO if not for the pvp?

uhh PvE content. Many people do not like PvP particularly in mmo's due to things like ganking, and level/gear differences being more important than player skill. Personally I have a huge dislike towards being forced into PvP. I prefer consensual PvP where I have the choice (duels, PvP zones, etc).

I'm right there with NeonSamurai. I really don't enjoy the PvP as much. Makes me wonder why I play EVE.

That's what I like about EVE, the amount of freedom you have. Personally enjoy every aspect of EVE pvp, except large blob warfare.

I'm going to have to disagree. The only reason that I am considering signing up for an MMO is PvP. The combat in these types of games is simplified, gear-based, and with outcomes largely determined by dice rolls. If I am going to play against the AI, I'd rather do that in a non-MMO environment, where I get greater control over my character and methods of attack and where the enemy AI is superior. The reason that I would tolerate what amounts to weaker gameplay is the social aspect of MMOs. That is, playing with and against other people because, frankly, these games are extreemly weak without the persistent multiplayer aspect.
In regard to non-consentual PvP, that aspect of having to watch over your shoulder is one of the things that has me looking at EVE. It forces you to interact with others, creating a more open in-game society.

Personally I have little interest in MMO's. I absolutely hate grinding of any kind, and find the process utterly tedious. In many mmo's to pvp (or pve) effectively, particularly at end game, you need the right items sets and builds to match. Getting the gear has to be the worst part of all, as grinding for such crap is unbelievably tedious. I also tend to be a soloist/explorer in playstyle, and don't much like being forced into groups with others, or being forced to socialize if I do not feel like it (though I usually belong to a guild).
As for forced pvp I absolutely hate it (I'm usually found on the role-playing servers). I've played mmo games with some of the most brutal forced pvp you can think of (everything from experience loss, to loosing everything you had on you, where everyone you do not know is an enemy and will gank you in an instant). Ganking is the one thing I despise more than anything else in an mmo. It is completely unfair and cowardly. I much prefer chosen pvp either by pvp zones or flags or whatever.
As for Eve, I have to say I would rather watch paint dry then play that game :)
As for non mmo games, I prefer co-op to pvp (Team or otherwise). I use to play competitively on the ladders way back in the day (i was a pretty good flag capper in tribes 1&2). But I kind of got sick of it. I especially hate PUGing, as that's where you find all the little twerps and hacks, which totally turn me off multiplayer.

The heck is PUGing? :-?
I feel like Neon. Don't want things forced on me, prefer coop over adversarial. I like playing against or with friends, but I'll rarely venture into random matchmaking and the likes. In fact, think the first time I really played competitively was the day Shogun 2 was released.
To be honest since I found my footing all I want is to play with friends again, either team up against other teams or keep it friendly. Might try another 1v1 made match every now and then, but for a challenge, not to compete.

I really want to get into that Shogun clan, but I don't think my current machine won't be able to handle the game without problems. So, I just joined the SubSim Steam group to wisfully pine the time away.

PUG stands for Pick Up Game, or randomly joining a group/server

I would call that forced in the sense that if I want to play, I am made to PvP when I may not want to.
Anyhow I figure I will split off this discussion into a new thread :)
I like how Runescape did it back in the day I played it. Basically, you had wilderness to the north and how the PvP worked was that the farther into the wilderness you went the bigger the number over your head grew. The number dictated who I could attack, say I am level 40 and there's a 6 over my head, so that would mean I can attack and be attacked by players from level 34 to 46.

I like how it is handled in EVE, the only place where ganking is not premited are complete newbie systems, everywhere else you are fair game. Though ganking people in highsec has consequences and you can easily avoid it by taking precautions since most ganks in eve are greed motivated, not just by lulz.
EVE is not a forgiving world and it takes some knowhow and effort to survive, which is why I like it.

I can run the game quite smoothly on medium settings for large battles, small/medium battles I can up the texture and unit quality to ultra without much of an drop.
Low settings give a very smooth performance, but of course it doesn't look very good. :O:

:salute: I salute you brother. I play MMO pure for the pvp side of it. PVE is for me just to level up once I've reached cap lvl I swap to pvp and stay that way till an expac comes out and repeat. Sometimes pve dungeon might drop a epic weapon or piece of gear I need so thats when pugging comes in (random pve groups) or if im in a guild that do both then ask guildies if they can help me get the weapon.
Nothing wrong with pve if the guild is good they can progress and become well known on the realm and its a quick way to get gear. Though taking on other players is more fun. The hunter or being hunted.
World of Warcraft. Reins.
Seriously Ive tried:
Aion - its a grind fest give up your day job to get ahead.
Age of Conan the fighting bored me real quick it was like Guildwars all over again just click and hit couple of combo moves but no real technique
Warhammer online. Not bad of a game probably the best out of the other two.
WoW has the best pvp ingame imho no other mmo ive tried beats it.
Im hoping the new Warhammer mmo that comes out 2012-2013? will change that.

Takeda,
I'm running it at or very near minimums and I can play at medium settings without any problems. If you can run Empire or Napoleon you can run Shogun.

Well that 9800 has almost 3x as much core to work with, wouldn't be surprised if it delivers more than twice the performance. :-?

Think that as well, doesn't seem to be more demanding untill you crank everything up.

Haha, love how this got pulled out of another topic to keep it on track, and now this one is being used the same way :haha:
Anyway, I'm with Kiwi, when I played, PVE was all just for grinding. I played Star Wars Galaxies (X-WINGS **** YEEEAAAH), and the only reason I did PVE was to level up as a pilot and to get parts so I could at least compete in the PVP dogfights, and those were insane if you got a group together. Not to mention, PVP is a pretty good way to find others to play with. The pilot community in SWG was alright - some insanity here and there, but for the most part most everyone was laid back and only freaked out when the devs started playing with stuff - so it was really easy to jump on the pilot chat and find something to do. Then again, on the ground PVP was pure insanity, it wasn't uncommon to see people go batsh!te insane over stuff, so I guess it depends.

Eh that's the way of this forum (side topics).
As for pvp systems I liked, I liked how Dark Age of Camelot did it, with the pvp only zone, that had sieges and the like. It didn't have the crazy gear needs of games like wow (or swg for that matter), but the level grind was painful.
I didn't care a whole lot for the SWG system, but a lot of that was due to the massive time investments involved. To be effective you needed the right build, and top line krayt gear which is damn expensive. Furthermore you would need to replace it as the gear wore out (at least until they introduced those anti item decay things, but those cost even more money). The time investment was nuts (and I know, I had a jedi back in the day). As for space, well I was part of the imperial navy in my guild, and a fighterpilot. But on our server, PvP was extremely rare in space.
Its grinding for gear that I probably hate the most for MMO PvP, followed by ganking (particularly on servers where the ganker can steal all your stuff other then equipped items).
As for EvE, I have never understood the interest in that one. I'm a pilot type, and I found the game pretty much was playing itself for me, with the occasional order thrown in. I found that tedious as all heck and would rather watch paint dry.

I like both. i like balance. Problem with PVP is the GMs or administration that don't enforce there policies when there are exploiters. It burns out the fun of the game fast for newer casual players.
If OP is referring to EVE, Then yes there is issues with PVP. The game mechanics are used for experience pvpers to cheat or bend the rules to favour those less fortunate aka Noobs.

What ever happened to the wilderness? From what I hear it's gone now or something :hmmm: I used to play it quite frequently but I kind of lost my fancy to it once I got hacked and all that. I used to swing around and see what was going on every once in a while but I lost track

Uh... I have no idea, stopped playing around the time they introduced 3D
models and introduced all those restrictions to mining, 1 ore that respawns
around the rock, need to rest etc. Mining coal in quantities that would sell
well and get you that armor you wanted was PITA enough before all that BS. :-?

True enough.. I stopped playing after I did all the quests and all I had left to do was grind $$ for new armor.. pain in the arse..
