(Note: Cross posted from Ubisoft technical board; I'm not confident about their ability to help so I'm shotgunning my request :06:)

Greetings,

I recently purchased SH5 from Amazon digital download. The first time I installed it I had a number of problems including machine lock ups, CTD (crash to desktop), etc. I then uninstalled it and tried reinstalling.

After the reinstall it seemed to work. I've removed the VC++ distributables, and turned off vsync in graphics to remove the 'screen too dark' issue. Graphics quality is on high.

I was able to start a new campaign and completed the training mission. I then docked, got a new mission (British Coastal Waters), and left port. I was en route to the patrol area via the Kiel canal when it CTD. I then attempted to restart SH5. From that point on SH5 causes my machine to totally lock up (hard boot needed). I'm able to get past the log in screen and make it to the 'Silent Hunter 5' screen with the progress bar when the machine locks.

Nothing had changed between when it was working and the lock up. I've since ensured all VC++ redistributables are removed, etc with no luck.

Here are the machine specs:
Asus P5Q Pro mobo
Realtek HD audio (on mobo)
Intel Q9550 2.83ghz quad core
4gig memory
2x ATI HD 6850 in crossfire
Win7 x64 Ultimate
Wifi connection to internet through cable router

I use Avast antivirus but it's disabled.

Any suggestions?

Regards,
John E.

I have a very similar system, same cpu (Q9550), win 7 64 ultimate, but no issues like you here. I have 8 gigs, but I doubt that would be an issue.

The only potential culprits I could see would be the onboard audio or the crossfire. Maybe try disabling the audio or one of the cards to see if that is the problem?

Also do you have win 7 service pack 1 installed? It sometimes causes issues with SH5, although that is more intermittent CTDs.

Thanks for the reply!

I do have SP1 installed. It was installed prior to the hard locks though. I'll try disabling the sound and one of the cards (currently at work).

BTW, does SH5 keep logs anywhere that can be examined to try and determine what it was working on when the crash took place?

Greetings folks!

I took Bilge_Rat's advice and disabled the CrossfireX on my machine. Epic Win! :D

Spent a good four hours playing and no hitches or lock ups. Thanks kindly!

John E.

Thanks!

Already done and did fix the problem. It strikes me as odd because as far as I know there isn't a requirement to 'support' Crossfire; my understanding is the app just see it as a single adapter.

Such is life. :haha: It's working now so I can go get my sub on!
