View Full Version : Considering SH4
Skybird

After upgrading to new system and OS, I found that no matter what tips I tried, SH3 does not correctly in stall and run on my new rig. So I consider to switch - by pressure and emergency :DL - to SH4.
Question: SH4 Gold - is it compatible with Win7 64 Bit and 4-core CPU? And is it starforce again, or free of it?
And as I think Gold comes in versio0n 1.5, representing the last patch standard - is it playable and bug-free to a comparing degree with SH3, or is it a bug-party?

It should install fine and there is no Star Force.
SH3 should install fine if you have a newer version that is Star Force free.
Just do NOT install to Program Files on SH3 or SH4!

Huh I installed sh4 in program files and it works fine. (Though I turned off UAC)

Not much of use if you cannot install or use SH3 cause you run W7. The internet is filled with cries of agony over this. As I said, I was was unable to get it installing and running, too, no matter what I tried. All tips failed.

Give it one more chance, guys. I run SH3-GWX with many added mods, and SH4 1.5 plus TMO/RSRD all under 64-bit Win-7 with no problems (other than I can still overload the graphics even with twin SLI'd ATI 8600's). The secret really is, as many have said, to do an absolutely clean install (delete everything from prior installations, including the SH3 and SH4 folders in your Documents file), and install to C:\Games\Ubisoft\... or similar, anything but the ProgramFiles directory.
Don't give up the ship! :salute:

Buy it assured it's gonna work fine. Play stock first, then try it with mods and see how it looks even better! BUY IT through subsims search tool and help keep this forum afloat at no additional cost. Click my sig.

Yes, the cry-babies I know all too well :D - but not being able to run SH3? Under Windows 7? Rubbish!

And Commando... pardon me, but why would a guy from Germany have his SHIII shipped across the Atlantic?
I'm sure Neal will keep this old girl afloat without that dime... :|\\

I too run fine under 64-bit Win 7, but I've only got dual not quad core processor.
The link to the subsim store links to Amazon sites in Canada, UK and Germany, so no transatlantic shipping needed for Skybird. And every dime helps - they all add up to make quarters, and dollars. :yep:

I have to agree with Torpedo Bait and Jan, I was having some problems with windows 7 (SH4 1.5 install w mods), I tried changing the compatibility mode and it worked fine, installed IN program files. I am going to do a clean install directly to the C drive but the point is, SH4 works with Windows 7. As you might know, to get this particular game to run to your liking might require some extra time but it's soooo worth it. So to re-quote Torpedo Bait...don't give up the ship! Keep trying those system tweaks.
Good Luck!

I read all those tips you guys mention for SH3, point is they work for some people, but by far not for all, and there is hardly a pattern to be perceived.
[grandfather mode on] I have manged to get SH3 running without Starforce long before some of you had become board members. ;) :D [grandfather mode off]
The Amazon links set up by Neal automatically link you to the stores that are nationally most matching for you. But somebody already said that.
On SH3, do a Google search for "SH3 and Windows 7 64", you then should see easily by the results that many people can not get it to run or even to install. Some do not knpw tzhe poissiubly tricks, and can be helped by telling them about Admin modes and UAC and dirtectories etc, but again: these things work only for some. For many, they do not. It's even wors eif you have a first egneratiuon copy of the game which still is starforce infested. I know how to get it runnign from that CD without Starforce ever reaching my HD. But installing it correctly under Win7Pro64 proved to be impossible. And I did not even come to the point where to try to bypass the follow-up installation of Starforce...
Anyhow, coming home from town I got myself a cheap copy of SH4, by AKtronic. Will try that tonight.

I strongly advise against playing the vanilla game. It will kill your inner child. :O:

I run SH4 on Vista 64. I did make another 'Games' folder for it and stay out of program files as Privateer suggests.
I also agree with Ducimus. Load the vanilla and find a larger mod pack. Install immediately. Stay thirsty my friend.

Well if you plan on staying in the atlantic as german uboat I recommend operation monsun and to stay in the pacific as us sub I recommend tmo. Awsome mods graphicly and gameplay as more of an improvement than with stock sh4 plus there arw more mods coming to om at later dates. Hope you enjoy and hopefully youll find a way to get sh3 running again.

Different to SH3, SH4 installed flawlessly, and runs flawlessly. And no Starforce. :shucks:

I know there are problems installing the older versions of SH3 with StarForce.
The newer version that is StarForce free installed easily, and was modded with GWX 3 with the same ease.
I highly recommend the newer version of SH3 without StarForce!
StarForce and the Reloaded Hack cause many issues with the Game.
I run Win 7 64 bit
SH3 is installed to the D: drive.
SH4 is in Program Files (x86) on the C: drive.

Why hasn't it come to my mind earlier that when I spend money on SH4, I could as well have spend it on SF-free SH3...? :damn:

I have not even attempted to install the StarForce version on Win 7 64 bit.
If I was to do so?
I'd probably try to SandBox it.
But at just over $7 dollars U.S.?
The time involved would cost me more money then the New releases.
And if it's the Atlantic theater you want, SH4 does have OM which IMO holds up well to the best SHIII mods have to offer, even with a few advantages of its own (including obviously better graphics, better crew management, and arguably the best-researched and detailed campaign traffic of all SH atlantic campaigns). On the minus side, it just lacks a lot of the bells and whistles (extra ships, objects, etc.) of SHIIIs advanced mods, along with Commander. But it's worth a try, and in fact I've played far more of it in the last 2 years than SHIII. So to my mind it's an adequate replacement for needing SHIII...

:yep:  Couldn't have said it better myself. I'm still stuck on both, SH3 because of Commander (I have to keep the Ship Names going) and the cute harbors, and SH4 for all the reasons mentioned above.
That said, if SH4 ever gets those things, I won't have a reason to keep SH3 on my computer.
