Stupid and funny mods that we would like to see

Could have posted this in the mods forum, but as that's for more serious work, and I don't expect any of these to actually be implemented, I figured it would be better placed here.

Just some light hearted fun here, add your own ideas!

Funny mods I would like to see:

Italian Asdic sound file replaced with one that says "Ciao!" instead of Ping!

A Balz mod where all the crew wear tea cozies, and they sing the orders back to you.

A waterskier mod. (Actually, probably wouldnt be too hard for a skilled modder, use the fisher guy from the pier, and then mod the flags/pennants mod to set it waaay behind the boat).

Deck gun has a "BANG!" flag shoot out of it instead of a muzzle flash with each shot.

Flak gun makes a "Pew Pew!" noise instead of gunfire.

Hello kitty IIa Skin. (I think I've seen one actually).

IVb Night Rider Skin.

All crew replaced by lolcats.

Exhaust blows bubbles.

Laundry instead of pennants on the mast.

Eels bark like a crazy dog instead of motor noises.

Hmmmmm.... I might try my non-existent modding skills at changing the flags/pennants mod to do a jolly roger...

You know, some of the sound mods would be easy enough, all you have to do is create a file of the appropriate type - .wav, .ogg, whatever - and rename it to match the name of the file you want to replace it with. Then swap it into the game in the same location.

As I recall we did once discuss - in a similarly silly way - the possibility of replacing all in-game radio messages from BdU with messages that say basically the same things, only written in Lolcat....

Great way to lull the enemy into thinking you're harmless and then whamo - hit 'em with the bang flag from the deck gun! ;)

Replace the existing crew models with ones that look like the cast of Thundercats. Then, replace all of the crew response sound files with soundbytes from the show.


I think a mod that would make the U-boots look like giant cigars would be fun. Replace the conning towers with Zippo lighters, and the periscopes with matches.

To make the water-skier mod even more amusing, replace the torpedo visuals with a skier propelled by a jet pack screaming towards the target.

There's a discussion about adding new images for officer's faces in another thread... and somebody mentioned the 'ofaces folder.'

Which made me think it would be funny to have a mod that changes all your 'ofaces' to:

A Star Control mod. I don't remember which alien race it was in the first game that pronounced 'human' as 'hunam', but the radio messages would surely be more entertaining in their language. :)

Well, I'd have to get WB's permission first, and I'm wondering now if there aren't other communications that come from somewhere else, like the standard messages that you get after sending a patrol report. I think they might be in a different file but I haven't looked.

It also crossed my mind that it might be fun to include an option that changes the clickable officer icons in the lower left of the GUI to pictures of Serious Cat, Happy Cat, etc.

I have to say this would be a lot of fun if you had a friend that played the game and could switch out the files without their knowledge as an April Fools joke. :rotfl2:

Plus the idea about having the diesel exhaust blow bubbles instead of smoke, but that's way beyond my skillz.

Edit: and naturally you'd want the quote that crawls across the bottom of the screen in the opening menu to be something like "This r serious game. U-boats iz serious bizness."

My 3D modeling skills are non existent. However, I did consider trying to make a Balz Mod. Features would have included:

- The submarine ambient replaced with soldatenlieder.
- "WASSERBOMMEN!" at inappropriate times.
- The tea cozies, obviously.
- All dialogue is turned into Balzy doublespeak.
- Station names are changed. Ex: hydrophones => froo froo. Torpedo room => boom boom chamber. etc.


Also, unrelated mods:
- Ghost ship mod. Similar to creatures, it gives no report and vanishes when approached or fired upon.
- Quackers. In short, they are deepwater unidentified underwater contacts that move extremely fast. I was thinking of making the model be a very small object that wouldn't be seen easily at such depths.(seehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quacker_%28sound%29)

Or what about a "Flashing Nurse" mod where one of the dockside nurses gives you an eyefull to keep you warm on those long, cold patrols.

Last but not least is the "Galley" mod. Normally it's game over when your fuel runs out, but with the Galley mod your crew will ship oars and row, row, row your U-Boat back to port.
