Surprised no one has mentioned this game yet.
For those out of the loop it's a Rockstar game(I've personally never played a R* game I didn't like) in which you play a detective in Los Angeles circa 1947.

The gameplay has you investigating crime scenes, in which you find objects(think Secret of Monkey Island), and you have to figure out how the objects play out in the crime.

You can also interview suspects and witnesses. Although instead of explaining it, I'll let the following two videos do the job for me:
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/gameplay-series-l-a-noire/710343
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/gameplay-series-l-a-noire/711461 (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/gameplay-series-l-a-noire/71161)

I have to say, I have high faith in the game.

Edit: Also http://www.gametrailers.com/video/developer-diary-l-a-noire/708505 the tech looks awesome.

Is it gonna be console-only like Red Dead Redemption?

I still wanna play that but can't :(

Rockstar seem to be on a roll lately, but it's sad that they seem to be completely abandoning the PC.

It'll probably be put on PC at some point(just like Red Dead).

I was reading in one article that if you set the game to the lowest difficulty, your partner will basically hold your hand through everything, and pretty much solve the cases for you, while on the harder difficulties you have to find everything yourself, and it's easier to screw up interrogations.

Also, while there will be humor, it wont be like GTA or Red Dead.

Edit: If you are interested in buying the game check out the preorder bonuses:

Saints Row 2 didn't really do anything for me, and while I'll play the 3rd, It's not on my buy list, I'll probably rent it like I did with number 2. I'd prefer another GTA:SA to another Saints Row.

Perhaps it's hope in veign... seems they didn't even really try with GTA4, but I find it hard to believe they would ignore a source of income like that, considering they haven't in the past.

So yeah, staying positive, hoping they'll port it at some point. :)

As I love detective adventures (I even play the CSI games out of lack of new crime adventures ) and GTA, this sounds like a great combination and I'm really looking forward to it.
I really hope they don't dumb it down too much, at least in hard mode *cough, CSI, cough*.
Another fear is that the facial expressions could be too obvious - like always looking to the side when telling a lie, however the faces do look great.

One of the gamestop pre-order bonuses is the following:
Badge Pursuit Challenge: Unlocks 20 Police badges to find across Los Angeles. Collect all 20 to unlock more bonus items.

This sounds like hidden packages from GTA, which points towards a free roam mode. Although it could also be like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare where there are hidden items in the linear maps.

Given it's a rockstar game, and 90% of their latest games have been free-roam(save Max Payne and Table Tennis) chances are you'll be allowed to wander around.

Speaking of free-roam, it would be awesome if they had some sort of Police side missions. Respond to brawls, shoot-outs, etc. Just something to do in between cases.

Good point. I see that the packages trigger an extra suit. So this could be how they implement free roam, through a "bad guy" suit. Kinda like the ..... suit in RDR where you can go apecrap without being bothered by the law. Personally I would love also to have shootouts with the cops - kinda like "cop gone rogue" :DL
I read somewhere that you can seize any car that you want, but it gives you some negative reputation or something like this. So this could also be like the honour system in Red Dead.

Thank _______(deity of your choice) it's from Rockstar, this gives me some hope that they don't make the same idiotic decision like the makers of Mafia 2 did.

Yes, this sounds great, would be cool to choose if you take the call or let your collegues handle it :"Nah, let the others respond to it, I just wanna ride into the sunset (boulevard ;))".
Btw, they already confirmed "unassigned" cases whcih you can choose to take, so the implementation of normal police work doesn't sound like a big problem.

I was wondering about this, although I guess it should depend on the circumstance. If you're out of mission it should give you negative rep, but if you're in the middle of a shoot out, it shouldn't affect your rep.

Thank _______(deity of your choice) it's from Rockstar, this gives me some hope that they don't make the same idiotic decision like the makers of Mafia 2 did. I concur. While some dislike GTA4 for it's realism, I honestly haven't played a Rockstar game I haven't liked.

Speaking of cases, I hope the pre-order cases are made available down the line through DLC. While I'll be getting the one from gamestop, I'm missing out on the Walmart case which sounds interesting:
"A Slip of the Tongue" is a bonus case from the Traffic Desk in which a seemingly run of the mill car theft ends up sparking an explosive investigation into the largest auto fraud racket the city has ever seen. With the stolen cars piling up and questionable characters at every turn, can you help Cole Phelps crack the biggest case so far in his career?

Wasn't the special edition the edition from gamespot? Actually now that I think about it, didn't rockstar say they were going to release all the costumes?

Thinking about it, the police side missions should work something like this:
The ability to respond to call-ed in police reports(Like in GTA)
The ability to stop crimes you see(Like in red dead)
And the random chance that someone will run up to you and ask for help if you're wearing the police uniform(Also like red-dead)

I can't believe this!

A Rockstar game where you play, *gasp*, a COP?! :o

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, there must be a major catch here! :arrgh!:

The police is corrupt. You'll have to go rogue to expose them. And only the aid of a serial killer will allow you to do so, after you're forced to help and let him murder 30 whores and assassinate the Vice-President yourself, and thus in the end go to jail as well.

Well, this could be the best police/detective game since the ancient Police Quest series went bust, and better.

I don't know about GTA4, but previous GTA games were quite moddable and entire alternative storylines were created for those games. If the engine this runs on is as moddable as those, then the modders could supply an unlimited amount of side-missions and further cases.

I hope!

Wow, this game just came out of nowhere, haven't heard of it until today!

That's because Rockstar has a tendency to keep their games under wraps until right before release.

I originally heard about it back when it was announced as a ps3 exclusive, and the teaser was shown. Then it dissappeared for a while, until Game Informer did a cover story on it.

Offtopic, speaking of unheard of games, Rockstar has another game in the works called Agent(orsomething) which will have a 1970's espionage theme.

Offtopic2: God damn space bar is acting up. Makes typing harder.

Edit: Oh, I read in an article that you can either choose to drive to crime scenes, or have the AI do it for you.
And speaking of articles, be careful reading some of them, as some have spoilers to different missions throughout the game.

Team Bondi's amazing animation was on full display here, actually succeeding in turning facial animations into gameplay. When you ask people questions, they'll react in a certain way. Sometimes it's obvious that they're lying, since they won't look you in the eye after their response. Other times, you might just notice a subtle tic that tips you off. You'll have to read their voices and expressions in order to figure out where they stand. Are they trying to hide something? Or are they just deeply saddened by the news of the murder?

That should answer your fears.

Picked it up today :D loving it so far, the facial expressions really are stunning. My only niggles with it are that some of the other animations (walking etc) can be alittle awkward, and the driving, although it feels quite good, I noticed that when you turn the car seems to slide slightly rather than actually turning.

Alsp has anyone heard any reports about it not working on certain PS3 systems? A few people on another forum I'm on seemed to be saying that there have been rumours of it not working on some 40 and 60gb PS3s :06: and also that Sony have blamed Rockstar for the prob and Rockstar have blamed Sony. When I played 2 cases together with a friend yesterday, we noticed that often we were so much in this truth, doubt, lie - game that we looked too much at the facial expressions (and not to forget the gestures), rather than just asking: what motive has this person to lie or withold information, or if they have a motive at all ;)

dunno how far in you are it gets starts to get a bit old after a dozen or so cases (find clues > drive to location > interview >chase scene). theres also not very much solving goin on, the game just guides you through it. it feels more like an interactive movie than a game. even the interviews are a bit lame in that even if you screw them up it doesnt really affect anything apart from your overall score.

i feel after an hour or so of gameplay im reaching for the off button. i was really looking forward to it after the exellent red dead but its a bit of a let down tbh.

It's a glimmer of hope at least. Seemed like Rockstar had bailed on PC completely. They can make pretty solid games, so it's a shame if none of them make their way to PC. RDR would be nice, but L.A. Noire is a start.

Must comment this!

I got LA Noire PC version and played it through, and what a game! It's completely different than the GTA games, more into the "interactive movie" direction. Normally I don't like that kind of games, but the script and writing just took me away. It's like the L.A. Confidential movie morphed into a computer game.

The PC port is a bit weird, I get some weird stuttering sometimes when I play it (argh, I ment that the game stutters :D), but usually everything is okay, it runs great with all the graphics too. Technical problems seem to be system related.

Many people have said that they won't buy a game with so low replay value, but it took me 30 hours to complete the game so you get your moneys worth.

It's not for everyone, and it's not perfect, but it was really refreshing to play a game where the goal is not to retrieve some magic crystal or wipe out all terrorists. If you like film noir stuff and appreciate good dialogue and story, this is your game!

I would love a reverse GTA game where I play the cops, sort of like the original police quest. Could work through the different divisions, like patrol, SWAT, homicide, Vice, etc.

It's only $12.49 in the US, which is only about 9.65€. Steam, for whatever reason, charges everyone the same numerical price in every currency despite 1 dollar USD not equaling 1 Euro. Either way it's a great deal. ;)

I recently got around to finishing the game, and started the DLC cases, can't really say I cared for the reefer madness case as it was more gun battles then actual investigating.
