oooooh.....

this could be really good, or really baaaaad.

Last I heard conan was going to be played by some eastern european guy? But that was a while back... not sure how momoa will fit the part, or how faithfull to the stories the film could be....

As a long time fan or the REH character (I have all of the manuscript/original unedited stories as they were published, in one fantastic volume) I have a particular fondness for arnold in his portrayal of conan. The original casting could not have been much better - arnie has always been the epitome of a movie conan. And lets not forget the superb supporting cast on Conan the Barbarian - granted the screenplay is a bit of a bastardisation of several themes from the original REH compositions, but set the central themes for the characters and the 'hyborian age'.

Not to mention Basil Poledouris' sublime score.

This has an awful lot to live up to.

And like the original star wars trilogy, sometimes the originals are the best - what comes after somehow fails to make the grade.

I'm not sure of the addition of the 3D gimmick either - it could be spectacular, or it could be a case of 'looks nice, but has FA content'... Though at least the trailer quotes one of the lines from the books - Queen of the Black Coast.

I liked Jason Momoa in Stargate Atlantis, so this not might be such a bad thing. Hopefully it'll be a success and his career on the big screens shoots up.

Just as long as they don't forget to include the "lamentation of their women" line.

I'm also a longtime fan of Howard and all his creations. I liked the movies with Arnie because, as you said, he seemed to be made for the role. On the other hand I hated what they did to Robert E. Howard's world. I thought the movies had nothing to do with Howard beyond the names, and while they were well made they still make me cringe every time I catch a glimpse of one.

Same here, read all the Conan novels when I was a kid, and quite a few of the non-REH sequels. Conan and his Hyborian world could be a great series of films. I loved the Arnie version, especially as stated above, the Poledoris score. This one smacks of straight-to-video, hope I/m wrong.

Indeed. Considering its a remake, my spidey sense tells me it will probably be really baaaaad.

I really liked the first movie. But you can tell, they went a whole different direction with Conan the destroyer. Seemed very D&D influenced to me. Too much high fantasy elements. I own both movies, but the first one, has a grit the other one doesn't have. And im deliberatly ignoring Red Sonja, it could probably be cast in this movie series, but, it came after Conan the Destroyer, and there was a sharp drop off there.

there are so many great lines in that film, and in fact it is probably the film i've seen more often than any other. i love it, even the crap bits*. But actually i seem to be the only one who doesn't much love the 'crush your enemies' line.

It's just a paraphrase of a famous quotation of Ghengis Khan's, and is used to illustrate Conan's central asian martial arts training. It doesn't really reflect Conan's character.

Far inferior to "Heeee didn't caaare anymoooore":DL

*crap bits delightfully include Conan and Subotai prancing across the desert, and the meaningful moment in the sex scene

edit: it is my suspicion that a real new Conan cannot be really made until we have mastered human cloning and can create a new young Schwarzenegger for the role

Hollywood will ruin it. Just like they did with the others. It will be all special effect and noise.

Oh well another fail...:nope:

If they could only use old days stories lines and today's special effects movies would rock.... ;)

I am ashamed to say that as a life long (23) Arnie fan (Saw Terminator when I was 4) I have never seen the Conan movies. I need to find them on DVD and watch them.

But Jason was pretty cool in SG:A. One of my favorite character next to McKay (lol) Shepard and the pretty little doc in Season 4 and 5.

Would like to see this work out for him, but I can't help but feel it might fall flat. Can always hope for the best though.

Conan The Barbarian http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082198/ is the best of the three 'conan' films. Great cast (james earl joans as thulsa doom is great), great score, and, for the most part, a fair plot.
The next two were spin-offs, sort of.
Conan The Destroyer (robert jordan story? I have a compilation book which is almost word for word) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087078/
not as good - a bit watered down, but grace joans is funny :-?

The last is Red Sonja. But I won't bother talking about that.

I wonder if Arnold will make a cameo appearance :hmmm:

Okay the big problem with Momo is that while he looks like he is reasonably good shape.....nothing about him screams CONAN.

Frankly, he's just too skinny.:hmmm:

When Conan walks into the room he better be head and shoulders above everone else there. Momo would just get lost in the crowd.
