Japan is a major market for Hollywood, which looks to international ticket sales to help recoup the costs of producing films. U.S. box office revenue was about $10.6 billion in 2010, while international box office revenue was $17.6 billion.

Box office revenue in Japan plunged about 41 percent last weekend, compared with the prior weekend, according to data from Rentrak Corp. In the U.S., the decline over the same time period was about 3 percent.

Actually, Japan is a fairly small part of the US film export market. While US films are often wildly popular in Japan, the fact remains that Japan is a very small country with relatively few people, crowded as they may be. A 41% reduction in the Japanese share of the US-dominated global film market isn't much at all, relatively speaking.

Not all that small; U.S. Population approx. 310 million; Japan Population approx. 130 million; Japan's population roughly 42% of U.S. population, not at all a small number and a large market by anyone's standards. It is also interesting to consider that all those peolple reside in a usable (habitable) land area rougly the size of Utah...
