View Full Version : I learned a new lesson
always monitor warships once in awhile with the periscope, it was the dead of night and the watch team spotted warship smoke in the distance so we dived to periscope depth. I confirmed it with the scope and since it was a ways off and the waters were a bit shallow I didn't dive deeper. It was a small patrol craft and with no warning it nailed us dead on target and we were dead after the 2-3rd depth charge. Its amazing that it knew exactly where we were with no visual or sonar cue and yes we were rigged for silent running at one knot.
The bloody AI is cheating :yep:
Lol yeah and the sonar lines on the map changed dramatically so there was little time to maneuver, I changed my commander status to surrender because we were at periscope depth and I'd imagined that we blew ballast managed to surface and get some of the crew out before the boat sank on its own accord. My commander served out the war on a Scottish POW camp and then became involved with the West German navy after the war.

That's strange
I've been accidentally rammed by a destroyer in the channel (WTF WERE YOU DOING THERE TIM!?!?!) and he just kept on going, which is pretty much the opposite of your situation. lol.
Maybe he spotted you with radar before you have dived? Or perhaps rough seas - sometimes when you're at periscope depth during storm the conning tower breaks the surface between waves.

Could have also been pure dumb luck. If they don't see you, or hear you on sonar (which is unlikely to happen early war with them at high speeds and you very quiet), they may have just accidentally rammed you.
If they never detected you, then I don't think the AI will react to a ramming. Do remember, they do like to beach themselves, and then try to continue on at high throttle by trying to grow wheels.
Cpatain: "Dinsdale! What was that noise!?"
Dinsdale: "Oh probably just a squirrel, Captain!"
They could have also damaged their rudder in the collision. I have seen merchants just circle until I sank them because I had knocked off their rudder earlier.
I'll credit the RN's victory to pure dumb luck and it couldn't have been radar because it was mid 1940 in this incident. It wasn't a ramming because I heard bang-bang-stdb propeller destroyed and the last bang which ended my career. The vessel was very small and I have survived ramming by bigger warships.
Time to start a new career roughly where this one ended and this may have been karma because I sank a flower corvet earlier in the year by pure luck as well (she was puttering along at night in a straight line and tried my luck with an electric eel).

I lost a career like that near Gibtalter.
Watch crew spotted a destroyer and we went to periscope depth to see about letting him have a salvo.
As I was watching him, his brother appeard right in front of my scope.
I watched the DCs coming down on us just before the screen went black.
