I think you had this in SH3, where when you sank a ship, the ship's name came up in your journal.

Just adds to things. Does this exist in Sh5?

No, in SH5 we have ship classes only. Liberty, Victory, Ranger etc. And the ships are only big ones, that will raise your tonnage sky high. You can have in a single successful attack the tonnage had by the best uboat captains in a year. Lame, but we cant do anything about.. yet.

SH3 didn't have it either. It comes only with the wonderful SH3 Commander from JScones. I've been wishing for something similar in SH4.

Elanaiba told me that SH5 would have such a function, and I've been shown a screenshot of a function in the Editor that may allow exactly that. I haven't pursued it further, partly because I don't have the game (a good reason for not looking at the in-game functions :D), but I'm also in no hurry because of the limited number of ships currently available. If I were to apply real ship names at this time you would mainly get American names that weren't really available until after 1941.

When there are more ships I will start looking into it.

Unfortunately that's been true of every subsim there has ever been, starting at least with Silent Service back in 1985.

Since I already add ship names to all contacts in the game it would be easy to add the ship name to the journal in my UIs mod. But let me ask you this, after just sinking a ship at periscope depth how are you going to know the ship name? :hmmm:

Is true, you can add names in ME and I did it for Op Leuthen in Open Horizons, but.. as TDW ask.. how we can identify the ship name at scope depth?

We may send a radio message before the attack with something like "ow hai. jerman iubot hier. we nid iur ship namen to writ it to ze torpedo we ar preparen for Sie. danke" :DL

A very good point. Because of the way SH3 Commander works the names can't be applied until after the patrol is over, which is just about perfect. In real life they did sometimes surface after the attack and interrogate the senior officer, and so garnered information that way, but for the most part you had to wait for OKM to examine Allied radio transmissions to find which ships didn't make port, so the names wouldn't be known for weeks, months, or even until after the war.
