View Full Version : The "Lefty" thread (not political)

It seems to me that even in today's politically-correct environment, where everyone gets consideration, legislation, and even compensation for being in any way different from the majority, an important group that is a critical part of our culture, even our humanity, is being ignored.
Worse, they are often derided with belittling slang terms like "southpaw" or "wrong-handers". Is our society above the ignorance of discrimination or is it not? The world doesn't think in terms of black and white, so why is it still acceptable to think in terms of right and left?:nope:
Yes, the right-handed majority claims to acknowledge us; they even "graciously" allowed us a day to celebrate left-handedness, not that they even know what day that is! But what have they really done for us!? Virtually everything is made for right-handers. Sure, you can buy left-handed equipment, but it costs more!
I, for one, am tired of being in the silent, shunned minority. I am tired of having a hard time with scissors! I am tired of being the goddamn pitcher in every baseball game! I am tired of people giving me that quizzical look and saying "You're left-handed?" and saying left in the same way one might say "ewwww..". More than anything, I am tired of being hit in the face with my own spent shell casings!
This thread is a place for we, the left-handed, to stand up and proudly say that we are indeed in our right minds. It is a place for us to remind the right-handed world that though we favor the left, we still have our rights!
I, gentlemen, am a left-hander, and I am proud to be called one.
Say it loud, say it proud. Down with right hander oppression!

My boss is left handed. We went to San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf last year, and he was very excited to see a left handed specialty store.
I tried out various things such as scissors, can openers, etc. I can see why they would want such things. For me, they were extremely awkward, and some were downright painful to try to use.

I once went Bass fishing with a good friend. On a warm and sunny Arizona spring my pole broke so I asked to borrow a spare. He nervously handed me one of his back up poles and I noticed then that the reel was backwards. I nervously laughed at his attempt at humor and asked why he gave me a god damned left handed pole! It was then that my eyes noticed that his pole too was left handed! He must have noticed the rage in my eyes :stare: as he first froze :o then like a rabbit dropped his pole and beer and fled. I caught up to this lefty easily and knocked him to the river bank. As I pushed his face into the mud I was incoherent with rage as I screamed about his closet leftism.
After giving him a proper thumping I kicked his lifeless carcass into the river.
As he stumbled to find his footing I gave him a warning. His kind isn't welcome in these parts and he needs to go back to where he belongs!
It was a real nice fishing pole and after melting down that bastardized reel into a necklace of right handed victory I put a proper RIGHT handed reel on and added it to my collection.:arrgh!::rotfl2::D

Funny you should mention that. 30 years later I still have visible scars in the crook of my arm caused by hot brass ejected from my right handed M16.
The darn things would get into my sleeve through the cuff placket and end up against my skin where they burned like heck.

The darn things would get into my sleeve through the cuff placket and end up against my skin where they burned like heck.
My sleeves were rolled up tightly so I didn't get any of that. Most of mine ended up hitting me in the face and then finding their way down the back of my blouse collar, especially when I was shooting from the prone position. I may have scars from that, but I wouldn't know because they're on my upper back, which I can't see.
What really sucked was when I had my M-249. That biatch would shower so many casings on my right arm that even the sleeves of my utilities couldn't keep the burns out. Reloading it quickly was also a pain in the ass, as was changing the barrel, but I got it down.

I recall that the BDU's had cuff solid plackets probably for that exact reason. The old OD fatigue sleeves that I wore were split halfway down the forearm and they were like a brass magnet when I shot left handed.

Thank goodness for the MARPAT and digi utility uniforms, then. I don't know what kind of KD course the army shoots, but having an open placket would have totally ruined my day at the range, especially with the stance I use in the kneeling stage of fire. I don't even want to think about what it would have been like in combat, or while using an LMG.
Good grief man even I don't wear blouses and I'm a grrrrl. And here I thought Marines were so... rugged.
Hey, I didn't come up with the name, k? In the Corps, the shirt for the utility uniform is called a blouse. A hat is called a cover. The pants are called "trousers". A helmet is a "kevlar". Referring to any one of these items by any other name is actually a punishable offense.
But we're getting off-track here.

Hey I'm a lefty too, and I object to paying premiums for "specially" manufactured products for lefthanders.
On the issue of shooting:
Having never handled a rifle before the army, it was quite easy for me to shoot it with the right hand, as I didn't learn it any other way, so no burn marks from ejected shell casings for me.
I think the notion that the left hand is the "bad" hand comes from the ambiguity of the latin word sinistrum, or rather it's change of meaning from left in latin to malign in English or German. Even today when somebody tries to take advantage of you, it's said "Er dreht eine Linke", "Linke" stands for a fraud in this case, if somebody behaves/moves "linkisch" he's clumsy or inept.
I'm just glad I wasn't born in a time where lefties were forced to do it the "right" way, with tying their left arm behind their backs.

As a consequence my mother writes "under" the line as opposed to "over" the line. The picture, in this thread of Obama writing is an example of the more common writing over the line. I wish I could find a picture of the other way.
For reference, a right handed person writes under the line: Their hand is under the line they are currently writing.

When in school (50's and 60's) I had nuns for teachers through the first 8 grades. They made me write with my right hand for 3 years. In Grade 4 I won my freedom to use my natural left.
Even after they let me use my left, they required me to slant the paper so the writing ended up looking like it was written by a right hander.
In the movie Saving Private Ryan I found it interesting that Spielberg cast a left handed shooter as the sniper. (was that Barry Pepper?) I can still see him up in that tower trying to shoot that bolt action rifle quickly but using his left hand to reach over the top of the rifle to work the bolt to chamber rounds. It looked incredibly odd. (I shoot right handed)

His accuracy, and anybody's accuracy in a movie is dependent upon how accurate the director wants him to be.
He really was not shooting at anyone. They could have him never hit or never miss...up to the editing room.
I was just speculating whether Spielberg deliberately cast a lefty for that role or if it just ended up that way by chance.
BTW...Pepper does a very good job of handling the rifle in that scene imo.
