There are four patches (US DVD and download and European DVD and download) , have you got the right one?

They are all available from the link below:

I think I am having a similar problem. I am trying to install the game onto my laptop and keep getting an error message stating that I need to run the game with a version of windows 95? Maybe its just another Vista screw up?

You must ensure you have the correct patch or check that the version you have isn't already patched.

Well what I did so far is DL the patches from Ubisoft 1.1-1.4 and installed them all in sequence but still get an error message.

"This application cannot be launched with a release version of Microsoft Windows 95 OSR2.1/98/ME/ NT 4.0/2000/XP/ Server2003 only"

Check your Sh3.exe in your games root folder.

(should be C:\games\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII - don't install into default path)

Rightclick -> Properties -> Tab Details - if version reads 1.4.0.1 your game is patched to 1.4b.

If you have to patch your game - use only 1.4b and choose your correct patch file.

US - for DVD or Download
EMEA (Europe, Midle East, Asia) - for DVD or Download

Just tabed through properties, doesn't even give me a version number. This is turning out to be a real headache. I'm going to uninstall and reinstall to a different location and redo the patches.

I've a sneaky feeling your game is already patched.

If you installed your game into the default path the sh3.exe is in C:\ProgramData(orSimilar)\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII

It's not in MyDocuments or Users\LoginName or whatever.

Rightclick the sh3.exe and choose 'Properties'.
You'll find a tab 'Details' - there is your version listed.
If you don't have a 'Details' tab - switch to administrator rights.

Reinstall into a different path to trick the Windows UAC feature.
It enables patching and modding the game without trouble.

As Jim mentioned you'll probably have a patched game - the newer/recently bought ones are without StarForce but already patched to 1.4b.

I give up, I opened a ticket with Ubisoft. I have the game itself in:
C:\games\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\sh3.exe

The game itself was purchased years ago and installed on an ancient desktop in the garage that i decided to toy around with. In the properties tab, it doesn't show me the version of the game (patch wise) but since i installed them all the way up to 1.4 I'm confident it should be up to date. I didn't have any issues with patching. It just doesn't want to recognize the windows version on my laptop to open

Is it an original install DVD from 2005 or 2006?

It may be starforced - and the StarForce drivers of SH3 do not work with VISTA or WIN7.

You'll have to remove them: http://www.star-force.com/support/sfdrvrem.zip

If it's a newly purchased copy it is almost certainly already patched. Follow Mittelwaechter's steps to find out which one you have. Note-in my version it doesn't have a tab marked 'Details'. It does, however, have a tab marked 'Version', which tells me I have version 1.4.01.

@ Leutnant77: If you need to patch it at all, you only need the last one. It is cumulative.

Searching your windows task manager will not find any Starforce programs.

You will need to do a web search for archive rld-sh14.rar or search for Silent hunter 3 v1.4b No DVD/Fixed exe to get the archive. Do not post links in this forum, everyone should know how to use Google.

In the archive you will find 5 data sets (SH3.EXE, MISSIONENGINE.DLL, SIMDATA.DLL, UTILS.DLL & STATEMACHINE.DLL).

Once the above is complete install SH III again, and take the DVD out of the DVD Drive.

Do NOT play the game after installation.

Now you will need to patch the game, patch 1.4. Ensure you install the correct patch i.e. EMEA-DVD, EMEA-DL, US-DVD, US-DL (see here (http://www.silenthunteriii.com/uk/updates.php)).

Do NOT open the game after this process.

Now copy the 5 data sets into the main menu of your Silent Hunter III installation.

That’s it; you can now play Silent Hunter III Starforce free. When I copythe files into SHIII, is it just into the main folder or a specific one?

edit: Just got my email from Ubisoft, said the game is intended to run on Windows 2000/XP ONLY. Gotta love'em!

SH3 runs on Vista and Win7 - 32 and 64 - if not installed into default path and no StarForce drivers installed.

Ubisoft supports the 'original modified five files' on their own SH3 board.

The five files replace the original files in the games root folder.
Overwrite/replace them and you should be fine.
