Ahoy all,
I stayed away from SH5 probably way too long, mainly I was dissapointed after beta-testing SH4 patches and realizing too many easy-to-fix ussues where not fixed.
After reading Neal his SH5 review I understand there are issues, but that was always the case, except for the SH1 version :DL
I am certainly amazed by the gorgeous graphics I am seeing in the screen shot thread.
Since I have not upgraded my desktop PC for many many years I am wondering what to expect graphics and performance wise
This is my system
- MS Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit SP1 - Operating System
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz - CPU
- 2.0GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 400MHz - RAM
- 320MB GeForce 8800 GTS - Video Card
- 488GB SAMSUNG HD501LJ SCSI (ATA) - Hard Disk
- 5.1. High Definition - Sound System
- Q20WB Black 20" (18.9 visible) Widescreen LCD - Monitor
What can I expect and what will be impossible for me ? Graphics, Gameplay, Sound etcetera ?

You've got a more powerful PC than I have. Your only problem there really is that you've only got 2GB of RAM while running Windows 7.
I've got an AMD x2 240 @2.8GHz, 2GB RAM and an nVidia 7900GTX 512MB (Running XP Pro).
My graphics are way above SH3 standard and better than SH4. I do get some graphical slowdowns if I zoom in on a burning ship but still playable. The only time my game has turned into a slide show was once I got too close to an unescorted convoy and half the ships opened up on me with tracer.
The only other problem I have is that in the bunker before a mission and entering/leaving port my screen will intermittantly black out. I get around this by either Alt/ Tabbing out and back into the game (after moving the mouse to change my view direction slightly) or if it becomes too regular I just go to the nav map and wait till I'm away from the harbour after which the sim runs fine.

first, welcome back Drebbel!
second, your system should be fine. I have a intel quad Q9550 @ 2.83 ghz, win 7, ati 4890 and I run the game with max graphics at 60 fps.
the only issue I see would be your ram. I have 8 gb of DDR2 ram and my system uses 30-35% of total ram when playing SH5.

Thanks for the info and advice guys.
I will check out the stores this weekend for a copy of SH5 (I assume there are no tin-can collectors editions c/w regognition manual of the 5th version?)
I used speccy to check my RAM status and it seems I am only using 2 out of 4 slots. So there is room for improvement.

Getting extra 2 GB of RAM should not be too costly, remember that 32-bit version of Win 7 can only utilize memory up to 4 GB, so adding more would not help at all (IIRC).

that's correct. A 32bit processor can only physically address 2 to the 32 second power (or 4GB) of physical memory

And when I download it on the UBI site they want 28 Dollars for it, just as much as they want for a hard copy in the local game store.
