Hey guys I wasnt sure where this should go and I was hoping maybe someone here would have the answer.
I need a program (free preferably) that is a picture program that can blow up digital pictures without distortion (Because of pictures). Here is why.
I recently bought the Axis and Allies board game, I love the game (save for a few things) and my biggest gripe is the size of the board, sometimes, there is too much in a tiny space.
So my solution is to take and layout a new board (Possibley cardboard and around twice the size) and find a picture of the gameboard and print it off in sections that are twice the size and put together a new larger board. I know from blowing up pictures before that when you resize a picture to larger, some major distortion happens because the number of pixels stays the same or something happens. What Im looking to do is to be able to blow everything up, but so it is still clear, and easy to read and such. Thanks guys!

I don't know of any off hand, but If you take it to a local print shop (kinko's etc), they should do it for you. Seeing as you have to get it printed and mounted anyways......
The problem is, the information that allows the lines to stay smooth, doesn't exist at the larger image sizes. So the programs have to extrapolate the info from the surround pixels, and that's what leads to the distortion. Photoshop could probably do it, but you'd probably be editing a lot by hand. But try it, it might work out ok. Try switching formats too, to one that doesn't compress the image as much, so it retains a lot more of the original info, that way there will be less guess work done by the app.
I'd really just take the whole board to a print shop and ask them to to make it bigger, they should do all the work for you.

as well as putting it on a new board??? How much do you think it would cost??

For mounting and everything.... $20-$50.
But at the least they could print and cut the prints for you, probably less than $15 for that. Then get some good cardstock or foam board, and mount it to the board that way. Any good art supply or Photo store (that sells darkroom supplies) will have the materials to mount it.

No prob, just walk into the art store and ask. Tell them what you want to do and they will point you in the right direction for supplies.

Okay awesome, secondly you wouldnt happen to know of like a revised set of rules for Axis and Allies: 1942 version would you?? Preferably realistic rules or something??

Ah that brings back memories. I played Axis & Allies some ten years ago with a friend of mine. It was during the summer vacation. 30 degrees celsius outside, but we were locked inside the house for two straight weeks playing just one game of Axis & Allies. Now I haven't ever been aboard a submarine, but looking back on it now, I can safely say I know what a U-boat would have smelled like. :haha:
Photoshop is capable of doing exactly what you're needing; the problem is time. To do it right can be a very time consuming process to do it properly.
You'll need to split up the board into sections (haven't played that game in years myself either, so probably would need to scan it 6-8 times in order to get the full board) at a very high resolution. When I need to stitch together a large photo/poster I'll scan it at 600dpi; what gets difficult is lining up the scans into one large picture where all the edges line up properly and the map is geographically correct. Depending on the version of PS there's a built in function for printing poster by using multiple sheets of paper. Put in the paper size and it'll calculate what sizes it needs to make and once its printed you just line them up.
If you have a small scanner and/or no color printer then its academic. Only solution is probably going to be Kinko's or a local print shop if you can find one. A (real) print shop would be ideal, if you have a local one that's privately owned and been around the neighborhood for many years you'll probably have the best luck there out of all the options. Places like Kinko's have no problems with hitting you hard with the pricing, someone local is more likely to be friendly and give you a discount or charge you at a greatly reduced rate (especially if he/she also was and Axis & Allies player from way back when as well).

Hmm alright. Right now Im focussed on getting a new set of rules implemented. Things that change the base of alot of units.
What Ive come up with so far is letting transports carry 4 instead of 2, or letting subs(To really make the more powerful) get two rolls per round (Simulating 4 tubes), and not being able to be attacked unless destroyers or planes are in the area to depthcharge them. Except on every 3rd attack round they must surface and can be hit by all ships. Crazy stuff like that. I actually tested the rules out last night and I quite liked the few changes I made, they worked pretty well. I changed the suprise attack so it really becomes one (Instead of you get a suprise attack with the sub then it cant participate in the next attack, it gets the suprise attack with no retaliation roll and then gets its normal combat rolls, and in the suprise attack is the only one where the attacker can choose whats hit)
