View Full Version : Are there other US subs out there???

Been playing SH4 for years off and on and, other than while in port, I have NEVER seen another friendly sub out there but I sometimes see posts that make me think they are there.

So, does the game model this?

and second

When you report an enemy contact to comsubpac will teh game actually send a surface TF, sub or air-wing to attack that target?

No to all questions, although you can do some of those in Uboats.

Wouldn't it be possible to put some friendly AI subs around randomly? This could be interesting. :hmmm:

Perhaps there could be missions requiring transfer of sick/injured crew or supply of critical parts or such. Has anyone attempted this?

As far as I know you can't install them to work with the ME in campaign mode anyway. I've tried putting them in single missions, but regardless of speed, they stop and just sit there. I think for any US sub to work it has to be set to human control in game which limits you to your one working sub, otherwise it doe's nothing, the men don't even show on deck, so obviously unmanned. My guess is a good modder could probably work around this, but since no one has, maybe not.

Even if you could all they would do is ride around doing nothing except shooting a deck gun, they couldn't dive, shoot torps, anything, just be some rare eye candy you might stumble upon.
Doubt anyones gonna go through all that trouble to mod it when it has no effect in game.

You raise some good points. Maybe, if the game wouldn't accept U.S. subs, they could be worked into the game as "nuetral", and made to patrol around (British subs maybe?). The lack of diving is a problem if there is no workaround for it.

My thinking was not so much trying to recreate wolf packs torpedoing convoys, as having both friendly and enemy subs at large, so the player had to be careful about exposing himself and targeting these subs. From what I've read, seeing/hearing another sub, was always a ticklish situation. I had assumed they could be put into the campaign though. If not, it kind of kills that idea.

We have numerous US boats of all classes in various bases & forward bases including some in the Panama Canal in the mod we use, so yes, they can be placed in the campaign layers. It gets a little cluttered in some ports at high zoom levels if the Bearing dds mod is installed.

I have not come across any moving US boats yet but I'm not saying they are not there. I don't want to look in the files and spoil the fun.

U-boats and JP subs work in game with TMO and RSRD, we're talking working fleetboats here.

Yes, I read the thread, maybe I misunderstood up there when he said, "put some friendly AI subs around randomly".

Moving or sitting still it is startling to sail around the corner and be faced by 'a Boat' - that needs a fast ID and a decision.
