View Full Version : Am I cheating
I have gone in to the cgf files (only through my learning how to do this from the forum) and gave myself 60 of every medal, gave the men loads of experience and renown, gave the men all the medals and increased their stamina etc to full...spent some time giving everyone full promotions and gave all PO qualifications.
So up to the hilt in everything and am setting off to sea, with the best crew ever, these guys will never need to sleep and will fight like wild dogs. The sub is kitted out in everything it can have.
So is this considered cheating...should I plod along geting one medal after each tour...:D

If it were a competition then I'd say yes. It's not a competition, so how you play is up to you. If you want to know whether it's realistic, then no, it's not.
If you just want to beat the game, do whatever it takes. If you want to experience what they really did, your crew needs to grow realistically.
Petty Officers should all be qualified, as that's what makes them Petty Officers. They should only be awarded medals when they do something to deserve them.
Here's a question: Why do you feel you need to ask this of others?
For me it would be cheating, but you're not me, you're you. On the other hand if you start bragging about how great you are at the game, expect some flak.
Above all, have fun. :sunny:

:haha: No I am dreadful at the game believe me, which is why I cheated in the first place. Played for ages at beginners level with the game as is, struugled but enjoyed it...however...with the mods and cheats I find it more interesting to add extras...but trust me...I am crap at the game....
thanks for the reply

Well, if you're cheating because you suck so bad...that I can understand.
And yes, our Jim is brilliant. Sick, but brilliant.
Did you steal the medals off the graves of our troops outside Moscow?
I'm feeling bad now :hmmm: maybe I should restart with nothing....not bloody likely...:yeah:
Right then...Did you rip off the medals from our starving dying troops in Stalingrad as they freeze to death and pounded by the Russkies?

Ouch

Now hand back those medals. :arrgh!:

I feel really bad now.... but just think of my crews morale if I take them back....and think of the bashing I will get in the game too.
Tell it to our troops on the Eastern Front as they fight to save the campaign at Kursk. And our fallen comrades confined to a watery grave thanks to those damn murdering Destroyers that float above like angles of death.
Not even Bernard would stoop that low. :rotfl2:

Cheating? Yes. Fun? You tell me.
But can someone explain how to? And how to increase renown....I want a type IX w/o starting in 42/43, and w/o having to sell an arm and a leg.

Using Commander you can get an IXB as early as Dec 39 sailing out of 2nd Flotilla.
To change your renown go on a short patrol (out of the dock even then straight back) and save the game.
Now go to C:\Documents and Settings\usually your name\My Documents\SH3\data\cfg\Careers\your Kaleuns name
Open up the Patrols_0 CFG and third line from the bottom is Delta Renown....change that to any value you want.

You can search for the SH3 file using the search tool in your PC / Laptop or right click on its icon on the desktop to get its file path. This will tell you whst drive it is in, if you didn't choose your own destination drive at the inital installation
Open the files with notepad and change the text to whatever you wish as instructed in the previos post
When you try to open it a splash screen will come up asking to choose the web to find a program to open the cfg file or choose one from you system...select this option and choose notepad.

Using an XXI from 1939 - now that's proper cheating! :arrgh!:
TabbyHunter
03-05-11, 06:36 PM
I do that myself, but, after a while, i get bored of the XXI. It begins to look bland, i have to manualy turn off recharge mode, it has WAY too many torpedo's for my patrol lenghts, that is, unless i find a convoy, (less than a week on average, round trip) and i learned that at >5 knots, the thing is, as Marko Ramius put, "Has the manoverablility of a crippled whale". Someone make a mod for the IXC in '39 and that'll be a bit more fun. :salute:

I've searched in notepad, and there is no delta renown....the third from the bottom is sonar. Career_0....right? Because in that, none of the three patrol logs have any of the ships i sunk, and i know i sank the renown class battleship in scapa flow on october....7th...ish. That does, however, show up in just Career cgf.

Hmmm.
If you don't want to cheat, but can't be bothered with rotating the crew, which is understandable, why not:
1. Turn off Fatigue.
2. Use only the 4 basic "officers", at the 4 stations that require them.
No officers in the torpedo compartments, engine rooms, or damage control, ever.
3. No promotions or medals for officers (Front Clasp & War Badge are OK, after all POs have them).
4. PO promotions are limited to a maximum of 1 per patrol, after a minumum of 1 seaman has been promoted.
5. You assign GQ stations to the crew, and that's where they stay for the entire patrol.
Both engineering compartments fully manned 24 x 7.
A gunner, flak gunner, and 2 seaman on standby in aft berthing 24 x 7.
Good luck in dividing what's left between the 2 torpedo compartments, and damage control. This is where you find out that it's not a give-a-way.
(And you won't have to steal medals from the guys who won't be coming home from Stalingrad).

Download SH3Commander if you haven't already (available fron the downloads section as well as my FF account-link above my sig).
If your playing GWX you will need the Commander CFG file (again available from my FF account).
Open up the game via Commander and choose the new career option and set up the necessary parameters ie. flotilla, date and Uboat type et.

Yes, you can use Commander without GWX.
It's a great program that adds a lot of nice little utilities for enhancing careers. Be sure to RTFM before taking it for a spin :D

OK, that answers the question.
By not using a Supermod (GWX, etc etc) you ARE cheating.

To me, painstakingly earning promotions, awards, and qualifications is part of what makes the game fun, and is what builds serious attachment to your boat and crew, since it takes days of real-time play to attain them
Okay, okay.
So I have just started a new game, and this time due to immense pressure from this forum (:O:) I have set offto see in a basic model with full crew with no medals , experience, loads of fatigue..and worse of all a player who is still on a hard learning curve (basically crap at SH3).
So if I die and all my men die and slip into a watery grave, then I am blaming all you guys (:yep:)
My crappy sub is heading off now, on my other PC, those poor guys are shaking in their oil skins........
Davy Jones' locker awaits us...hope you are all happy now.....:wah::stare:

TBH, the experience of your crew and your amount of renown you have, have very little effect on whether you live or die.
Sure, a fully experienced crew makes your job easier, as they do everything better, and faster, but you're still running the boat. It's your decisions that put the boat into the situations that you find yourself.
Run Flank speed at 100m depth with 4 destroyers chasing you? Sure, go ahead, but don't blame the new guy in the crew.
And you can't account for pure dumb luck, like getting run over by a destroyer in a zero visibility storm.
Short of modding the hell out of the boat itself, so it flies, shoots nuclear eels, and makes a mean latte; the game is about your decisions, not the mechanics of the system.

I've found that a J class can ram be at 34knts in a full storm, and i don't even take 1% hull dammage, but the warship blows up, splits, blows up again, then sinks, hits me, and i die.....
Im still not sure what happend.

That is an old stock issue that has since been rectified in some of the supermods....certainly in GWX anyway.

Would you guys consider using the 'all weather guns' mod cheating? I'm thinking of downloading it. On the one hand I like the fact that you can't use your guns in rough weather, but I get pissed when I see merchants CAN use their guns in a storm.
Gargamel

Imagine trying to do some complex task while skateboarding on a cobbled street in a rainstorm.
Now do that same task, on the same road, while riding a bus.
That's why ships can fire and subs can't.
Even in moderate weather where I could get the gun crew on deck, but the waves were rolling pretty decent, or at least in a harmonic with the boats motion, accuracy was almost nil. Some shots would sail 100's of m's over the ship, while others would plunk just a few meters from the u-boat.
But the ability to use the Flak guns in all weather is a different story. Especially for the guns up on the Turm. I recently sank a sloop with my flak gun in my IIa, then a day later, encountered another sloop, but in bad weather. So I rammed it. I didn't get credit because the wave action of pushing it under sank it. :nope:.
But another thing a lot of players do is if they can't get gun crews on deck, they won't reload externals.

You can read and listen to all the advice and opinions in the world but the bottom line is...play the game the way you feel it gives you the most enjoyment.
When I created the all weather guns mod it was with the sole intention of giving those who weren't happy with the games constraints an alternative option.
It probably would have been better had the game come with all weather guns as a realism gameplay option.

The downside is that if the gun crew can shoot, no crew member will wear foul-weather gear. The two are tied together. I have my storm conditions set for 11, just so I can use the flak guns (which I never do anyway, but that's just me), but I never have them man the deck gun when I can see water washing over the deck.
They're alot higher out of the water than us.

Yeah, I tried playing with the mod but indeed, when the weather is bad they're just standing there with their shirts like we're already sailing from Penang lol.
It didn't feel realistic enough for me so that mod has gotta go then.
Also, I guess you're right, it's much easier to fire a gun from a large steady ship than from a rocking and rolling U-boat. Didn't think of that. So now I can't fire my guns in a storm, but at least this explanation took my frustration away :)
