Das Boot Director's Version and Das Boot book. Which one first?

Hi folks,

Got myself hold of both.

Now I do not want to have a bad experience (i.e. The Da Vinci Code, etc) but what would be better to do? Book first ? Movie first?

In this case it really doesn't matter. I had seen the movie a dozen times before I read the book, and it works both ways.

A piece of advice, though: Get the "Original, Uncut Version" of the movie. It's considerably longer than the Director's cut, and goes a long way toward explaining the crew's personalities and motivations. The Director's cut has better sound and subtitles, but the Uncut version does so much more.

IMO with Das Boot you're looking at one of those rare situations where reading the book first cannot possibly "ruin" the movie for you, because the movie is just that good. Personally I would say that the movie is a better film than the book is a book (and I'm a reader, so that says a lot), but then I can't read the original German so who knows.

I saw the movie first (many times) and that certainly didn't "ruin" the book either. I probably would never have read the book had it not been for the impact of the movie.

They both have essentially the same ending, so if you're concerned about spoilers (and don't already know the main plot points and how it all turns out) I'd recommend the movie first for maximum impact in that regard.

But either way you do it, it's gonna be good. :yep:

One very positive point on this is that at least I'll know how to view the characters in my mind when I read the book. :salute:
