Seems there's a major drawback here... when you attack at a direct 90 angle you are really presenting a beautiful target for the DD's sonar. Is the fast 90 approach then not appropriate for a TF or convoy with DD pickets ?

Yeahp! But if there was not a "trade-off" the game would be much less interesting eh!?!:03:

Anyway, you can pull "fast" 0-gyro torp attacks at other target track angles too (not only 90°).
or
you can get past the escort screen and get "in" the convoy. There are more than one options...:yep:

Yep, the Dick O'Kane method is only one tool in your tool box. You shoud always look at your situation and pick the best tactic depending on the situation.

Why dont you try John P. Cromwell's fast 45? You present less to the sonar and by virtue, an AOB of 45 is the best if you fail once, you still could shift to Dick's method.

My strategy is to find the largest target in the convoy and make about a 1500 to 2000 yard shot for my first approach early in the evening. If I get a hit then I'm ahead.

If I don't I rang the dinner bell for all the escorts but am far enough out that I can evade, do an end around and come back on the unguarded side of the convoy for seconds. Then I'll get in much closer because the escorts will be on the other side of the convoy.

So heads I win, tails they lose. I like it! Repeat as necessary.:D

Last night I tried a Cromwell approach for the stern tubes.

I evidently have much to learn about Cromwell's approach. :damn::damn::damn:
