Hi there! Forgive me if this isn't the right place to put this, but it makes sense to me to have this here.

I just recently purchased Silent Hunter V and have decided on doing a Let's Play of the game pretty much blind. Watch, enjoy, make fun of me, whatever. I gave a shoutout to all the fine people here at SUBSIM for all the great work you guys do!

Okay, downloaded both those mods. Unfortunately, I've already left Kiel as you'll see in the 2nd video so I'll have to wait until the next opportunity to port before I can install those mods, correct?

Awesome job :salute:

Really think this will give SH5 some good publicity. Some of your reactions are kind of funny (and similar to mine)... (Plotting the Kiel Canal is a pain in the arse..)

As others stated you should use some Mods. If you really want a complete supermod check out Magnum Opus in the Mods Forum. Basically a complete pack of what's made Sh5 a completely revamped game.

I'll consider installing some more mods, but the number one rule of a Let's Play is to never restart it. It basically kills the immersion.

I don't know about being a tutorial [Except perhaps at things NOT to do when playing SH5] but I appreciate the comments. :)

I believe the majority if not all of the Magnum Opus content can be installed while on patrol.

And Yes I did mean your videos :O: :D

As for a tutorial, I only mean that, since you're new and fresh to both this game and the series, it offers a fresh perspective (no background politics influencing your view of the game) on how good the game is, as well as how to play/use it.

Also, if you want to be lazy to go through the Kiel Canal and not plot a ton of waypoints, turn the time compression on high (1000x+) click on your sub (in the map) and set a waypoint.

Now, before your reaches the arrow. Click the and of the arrow to where you want your sub to go. This way, the sub will constantly try to point to where your mouse is. This way, you can simply drag your way through the Kiel without the navigator being ann annoying arse hole.

Ah, too late for that already. Episode 4 will be the last video before I hit the sack, and I've already redone all the plotpoints. However, the episode does leave on a cliffhanger so who knows, I might need that advice after all! :D

Great job!! I've been really wanting to do a lets play myself of sh5.

Couple of notes. You can click and drag ANY of your waypoints to change course.

And all you need to do is click on the heading ribbion, and from there you can select you course, or click the tab and get direct control over your rudder to avoid smashing into friendly ships. lol.

I HIGHLY suggest you switch to sobers time compression settings as well.. otherwise your lets play is going to end in 'Ship Spotted" "taking damage" Game Over in the span of about two seconds. Leaving you wondering what exactly happened.

It's actually quite humorous to watch someone using my UIs mod that isn't familiar with it. Snorkel depth? What is snorkel depth? :rotfl2:
At the end of the 4th video you have an enemy contact to contend with. How do I know? Because of the black circle which denotes the visual range of the contact. Did you install my IRAI mod?

Couple things... as I'm watching so sorry if it's haphazard :D

-To go to battle stations, talk to your XO (The guy with the eye patch in the Control Room).

-You can also restock on torpedoes if you visit a port (Like Helgoland)

-Torpedo attacks on the surface are a lot easier to do then submerged.

-Also, to get your crew to fire upon a merchant vessel with the deck gun. Order them to man the deck gun. And then go to binoculars (scroll wheel) and then when you're looking at the ship, press Space and they'll target it (you'll see a little yellow triangle).

-To manually use the deck gun, go down to it (go to the back of the conning tower when you're outside, youll be able to climb down the stairs (it'll be hard to find the first time) and then walk up the deck towards the deck gun and you can manually target it.

-To speed up the freecam, hold shift when your moving forward and it'll move faster.. also, when you're walking around the sub, hold shift and you'll run.

-There was a plane that bombed the ship when you were in TC.

Edit: Nice video mate! Can't wait to see how this progresses.

part six is hilarious! Wait! Are we smokin?! You're not smoking, that's called sub exhaust. It's the exhaust from your diesels. You must have installed my MO mod.
The radio messages you can filter out what messages you want to receive. If you click the upside down arrow in the bottom right of the radio messages box you can select which messages you want to receive.
Clicking a radio message will mark it as read. Then in the top right of the message you'll see a button marked 'Delete'. Clicking delete will delete the radio message. The arrows at the bottom of the radio message box allow you to scroll through each day's radio messages.
You have much to learn about MO. The core of MO is my UIs mod which has a very steep learning curve. I've added so many new features to the game it's not even funny. I have to look through my own code just to remember what I've added to the game :rotfl2:
Automation is your friend. Get to know it and how to use it and it'll make your life much easier for many routine things (especially navigating canals thanks to Trevally's scripts!). Automation is a script engine I wrote for the game that allows one to write their own automation scripts and tutorial scripts (a script engine inside of a script engine!). The tutorials are also very helpful in learning how to use the game and it's features. You can find them in Automation. You can access Automation by clicking the gears symbol in the right side upper bar.
Test version 6 of v6.4.0 can be installed after MO and I recommend you do so :yep:

Few more points.

-I'm not sure if MO has it, but try and find the EnhancedFunnelSmoke Mod, it'll make funnel smoke (from ships and your sub) more apparent and make it easier to visually see ships on the horizon (at a realistic level).

- You can go over 32x time compression, try 108x or 200x on map mode and it'll go faster. Kiel Canal is just normally a pain in the arse because of all the turns, you lose sight of ships, and thus when you regain sight of them, the game gives you another contact report.

If I remember correctly, if you click on "travel mode" it will stop all those radio messages when encountering friendly units.

It can be found up in the top right corner of the screen right above the time compression display.

Also: Sober's settings are very good, but I set land proximity to something higher than 32x just because of that canal.

If you are attacking a ship and you cause damage to it, you need to finish it off before you save and exit the game. If you dont you will discover that all damage is repaired when you reload.

Thats if you ever get out of the canal:haha:

The Let's Play series is more of an extreemly thorough video walkthrough. It is kind of a trips and tips and preview video article all in one, with an entertainment angle. They're pretty fun to watch, and there have been a number of people that have requested an SH5 video over the past few months. I think that VWFKamikaze is doing the community a very nice service by making them.

A Let's Play is basically the name given to a series of videos where someone records themselves playing a video game with commentary with the intent of sharing it online.

Edit: Actually, I like Takeda's explanation better. Let's go with that. :D

Actually, there are Let's Plays of that as well. They are called Interactive Let's Plays, where the person playing the game will stop at specific focal points and ask his audience what they want to see him do next. After their response, he records the next video following their instruction.

I don't have that big a subscriber base (Only 30. :( ) so it'd be futile to even attempt to do something like that. Maybe one day. :D

The lines are the hydrophone contacts . The hydrophone is useable on the surface so you can detect ships before you see them . Go to the hydrophone room , second on the right past the command room :O: Click on the round clock looking display , use the mouse wheel to turn the dial . Hit the ESC key to exit out of the station .

One thing I'll point out you never click on the crew members on the taskbar..

Those keys often have the functions your looking for. Return to Course, click on the navigator... Patrol Report, click on radio man, open reports..

LOTS of useful functions on that bar, and you've over looked it alot to search for the buttons else where.:salute:

The hydrophone contact lines:

Blue = Warships
Black = Merchants


Whether they are friendly or not is for you to determine. You are still in friendly waters so it has been safe to assume they are all friendlies.

Once you are well past that last friendly base it may be best to assume otherwise. :)

The radio messages were not part of the stock game. They were added by myself for immersive purposes. The radio messages aren't perfect but I did the best with what the game makes available. The biggest gripe with them is the sub/periscope spotted. I cannot discern between friendly/neutral/enemy for a ship (game doesn't make this info available). Thus is why you receive sub/periscope sighted from friendly ships. And that radio message means really nothing - it's just for immersive purposes (the AI will not react any different just because of that radio message)

Timezones were also not part of the stock game. They were again implemented by myself. They are not true timezones but rather nautical time zones. There is a difference.

About 80% of the items you're seeing ingame now did not exist in stock game :up:

If you are using the mega mod MO - if you click on the automation
page, you will get an option for an auto script called "harbour pilot".
This will auto pilot your boat through the canal or any other harbour.
It will place unseen waypoints for your boat to follow.

Almost thought you were gonna pass right over the 'report' button twice.. lol.

Once you open an officers taskbar, the second row of buttons generally opens up into a third row of options. Such as the Radio mans report feature.

Your realism settings cannot be changed until you end this patrol, back in the sub pen you can hit ESC and the game settings will be unlocked and you can change them as you desire! :up:

I can't play the game without those numbers.

Those are limitations on the value of the TC in game..

The first one is regular, the second value is with Travel mode on

Without these settings your liable to get attacked and sunk in TC without even realizing it, or come out of TC RIGHT in the middle of a convoy.

no ..it is like drewcifer said... first number is the max tc value when you are close to the land and the secon position (32) is the max tc value wfter you choose travel mode when you are close to land... same rule all over the place

yes..it is like you supouse... if you run in tc normal then when you enter in land proximity tc drop to 1..if you are in travel mode is supouse to remain at 32... but sober play with tc1onanyboxmessage also

The great thing about those setting is you can change them to whatever you want though. Max past 256, or Travel Mode speeds faster.

It just so happens that I prefer them the way Sober has them. To much TC can ruin your game, messing up the AI, or well just random bad stuff happens. and I personally play with the tc on message box off.

tc on message box on is good for me because when i run at tc 256 for example it could happend that i have some imp messages like smoke on the horizon or covoy reported by bdu...etc and my tc drop at 1... give me time to react in proper time to choose my next move.. the other messages like battery full recharged and so on not apear to often to botter me

Look closely at your radio messages especially the sub sighted ones. Generally if the message isn't in red or cyan color it's not for you. Remember there are other subs out there and ships can spot these subs and report them. I think that's what happened with your last sub sighted in video 10.

The options for the radio messages only persist if you edit the options file. Clicking them in game only 'sets' the options for that game interval.

As far as ship names there is a database of over 100 ship names that the game picks from. So it's quite possible you get a foreign name in the from field of the radio messages.

You can right click on a waypoint to remove it, left click on one and while holding down on the button you can drag them to a different position. :)


VWFKamikaze, once you come across enemy warships or some come to the aid of a merchant that you attack. Its a good idea to save the game before the cat and mouse game begins. Otherwise if you're sunk you'll have to start back at the last auto save. :salute:

J², your Let's Play has convinced me to pick up a copy of SH5. I'm ordering it through subsim's Amazon link as I type!

I have a game-play tip, from an old SH3 kaleun to a new SH5 player:

You should play around with your map drawing tools, like the ruler and compass. There should also be a stopwatch tool to help you measure how many seconds have passed.

You can mark the locations of your contact reports, every few minutes to estimate their heading and speed, to help you decide where to set an intercept course. The nomograph on the right side of your map can help you calculate speed from your observations. It's also a good skill for setting up manual targeting solutions.

Good luck hunting that small convoy in your next video. It doesn't look like it has any escorts so you might be able to take it out at a casual pace, but always watch out for armed merchants.
Black contact lines represent the sound of slower turning propellers found on merchant vessels. Blue lines are the faster turning props found on warships. Your hydrophone operator (the sound guy) is constantly listening for the sound of ships and can tell the difference between them. Your hydrophones should have small blind spots directly in front and behind your ship if they are modeled accurately.

You can pick up ships on your hydrophone before they're in visual range, and your u-boat ship is a lot harder to detect at long range. You will also see them before they see you. Try to use your binoculars, UZO and periscopes to get a closer look. Try to attack when it's dark, foggy or stormy to minimize the chance that anyone can see you.

There's a lot more to keep in mind. Have fun figuring things out!

Need to be within a certain radius of the marker while sinking ships in order to complete the mission. :up:

Agreed.

But I remember the days when I played first time SH3. Man.. that was something. When I raised the scope for the first time and saw all those dials and gauges I was so lost that I had to abort the attack and start reading more about those tools. But it was fun just because it was so complicated. And when I sunk my first target, Ive been jumping and dancing like a mad, I was so happy :D SH is hard to learn, but is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it.

Anyway, very nice videos VWFKamikaze, I enjoy every new update :up:

Ships were crashing into each other everywhere while leaving/entering port. Relieved to have finally finished a mission only to return having to navigate through your port which contained a maze of burning ships which either had crashed into each other or into a wall. It was quite a sight. :DL

For your convenience I link the first one, its the very basic tutorial (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=163736)with heavy image feedback, very easy to follow and understand.

Once you understand how things work, you can go further and try those based on 100% realism.

Seriously, I'm a bit jealous ! You just get there, and get a free convoy. :o You're lucky, all I get is lonely ships, when I get something. :wah:

I would advice you however, for the next time, to try and intercept the convoy unnoticed, shoot a few torpedoes, and then finish with the canon.

When you are spotted, the ships start moving randomly, and it's harder to hit with the torps. (Unless you get very close in which case, it's not that hard anymore)

Hello folks!

No, I haven't died or anything. I posted this update on my Youtube channel but thought to post it here too.

This LP isn't dead, not by a long shot, but March has been a big month for me in gaming. Dragon Age 2, Shogun 2: Total War, Yakuza 4, Ar Tonelico 3, Crysis 2, and Dynasty Warriors 7 have all been picked up or about to be picked up.

I haven't touched SH5 since the last video so I can still claim it to be a blind LP. My apologies to those who don't like this particular aspect of the LP but that's how I've chosen to record the videos. To all others who've enjoyed the videos thus far, I'm glad you have and you can await more videos as soon as I get my fill of March. :D

While I'm not interested in Dwarf Fortress or Star Ruler, I have sunk many of hours into Europa Universalis 3 and its expansions. Actually, I buy a lot of Paradox's games.

I'm also definitely looking forward to Sword of the Stars II when that comes out.

Hey folks, got a problem and I'm hoping some ATI users can help out so I can get the next set of videos off the ground floor.

Apparently with the newest Catalyst Drivers [11.3] there is no longer an option to turn off Catalyst AI. And as we all know, there is a bug in SH5 with Catalyst AI which causes black screens when attempting to exit the sub and weird spectral flashing when highlighting a particular object you want to use.

Anyone find a work around?

There's a chekcbox for it in my CCC (11.3). Don't know what to tell you.

It's under Gaming -> 3D Application Settings -> Disable Catalyst A.I.

At least when driving my 4870x2 it is. Not that I need to disable it, mind you.

Yeah, it's not on mine for some reason. It's got SMOOTHVISION AA, then SMOOTHVISION AF, then Tessellation, then Catalyst AI [With no Disable Option] then Mipmap Detail, then Vertical Refresh, then AA Mode, then OpenGL Settings. :(

Edit: Well I got rid of that bug by turning off Crossfire manually. Unfortunately, once the game has loaded now, the thing is stuttering like crazy, nowhere near as smooth as it was when I was first recording.

I remember there being a thread about stuttering involving Windows 7 SP1, which I now have. Is that the cause of it?

I'm reminded that these games are an attempt to remember history. The prevailing mind in the gaming industry just cares about earnings and being rich, but we, as a group, care about history I think. SH3 + MOD was a great historical document/experience. SH5 has followed in the tracks of SH4 which is : improve graphics, ignore gameplay/realism. I have no sympathy for the people that made SHV. They failed to do something that might last....

in the episode 13... the time 6:39... you received a radio message ... periscope sited... is not mean that they saw you... is more like to make the game more fun... this message you will get when you are around 8 km near a ship (default radio message settings)... if you look closer you will see that around the each ship is an gray circle... if you are in the exterior of that circle they can not spot you visual... the gray circle represent their visual range... increase and decrease related to weather tipe, day and night time and the noise of your engine:up:

in your video's you mention this mod which provide additional damage to opposing ships by fire... I run SH5 with MO, but never experienced something like that. Apparently you haven't either....
Could you (or someone else) tell me which mod this is?
I know in SH3+GWX this is standard, so I would definately want to see this in SH5.
(for you information: IRL I travelled by ship from Holland to Newcastle last week and i can't recall seeing a still burning merchantship, so i guess it finally sank :yep:)

FX update 0.16.2 will cause damage by fire.
For best results - ensure you start lots of fires (full length of ship)

Note: the game will draw the ships in the 3d world at 30km. If you go outside that range and the ship has not been finished off, it will escape. Also if you then go back inside the 30km - the ship will re-draw undamaged.

If your within 30Km... yes you will get a message that ship is sunk in your journal and message log....
If your beyond 30Km there's a good chance that the ship will reset. And you wont get credited with the kill.

I prefer to sit and watch until she sinks. Just to make sure she go's down.:D

Remember ..stealth is your friend...I think your next move would be to learn how not to be sighted to include aspect of your uboat shown to the target and speed of approach.
Diving down to check the hydrophone....you could have know what type of contacts they were just by listening to how fast their screws (aka how much noise they made) were going. I think bad weather and luck was the only reason you didnt get killed on your last video.

As for a torpedo attack..yes...read up on it... I would say, during the day, sett up way ahead of your contacts track (where he is going)....submerge and try a torpedo attack via the periscope. Do this to maintain stealth so your target will not be trying to evade your shots.

Quesiton for all: do you always get hydrophone lines while running on the surface? or is this lower realism? (pardon the ignorance..but i've havent played SH5...still on SH3...but havent even played that for a year (need new computer)

To eliminate hydro lines you have 2 options:

1) play no map cantact
2) play with map contact but use one of TDW optional mods from his UI:

3) if you want to increase the realism you should to install the IRAI mod v30... there you have an optional mod where you can not use your hydro when you are surfaced... the hydro will work when you are submerged

I'm an SH2 & SH3 vet and last played SH3 in 2007, when I died on patrol. I have now finally re-installed SH3, have modded it up (still need to install other ships' textures) and am on patrol 4.

Out of curiosity, I checked out SH5 threads and came across these videos. Now I'm spending all my time watching the videos (Only on #6 now). They are hilarious, but also, I can see how they can make the game appealing to an uninformed audience. But there is also perverse fun in vets watching you ignore traffic while concerned with plotting a course.

The SH5 graphics look very good! But I can't afford new hardware, nor any new games. So SH3 for me, when I can get away from your videos.

Great work.

It would have been amazing had you, way back in time, done a Let's Play System Shock 2.

My damage by fire mod from the FX_Update mod will cause damage from fires. The damage will take time to see flooding. Time will usually take 2-2+ hours. The ship might explode from the fire damage but that probably won't happen until 3-4+ hours. The best way to get it to sink from flooding/fire damage is to put shells all down one side of the ship and ensure there are fires on the front, middle, and rear of the ship. Even to see additional fires spread will take time, generally 1-2+ hrs. The flooding model was redone in the latest version of my FX_Update mod for the merchants. If you shell the ship all down one side trying to hit every compartment you will cause flooding. Note though that it will take multiple shots per compartment to have flooding start. The more shells you place into a compartment the faster the flooding will happen.
For you to see fireworks means the mod is not installed correctly. That is one thing I removed for sure with the mod.

You need to identify the ship correctly or have WEPS identify it for you (WEPS-->Torpedo Attack-->Identify target). This is important because it will set the correct mast height so you can use the stadimeter to get range measurement.

I have been watching and enjoying this series, and because of it I, too, have ordered my copy of SH5. I started with SubSims back in the CAOD days (10th U-flotille), and despite the "primitive" graphics (by today's standards), it is still my favourite. I am grateful that these posts are so recent; revealing current interest in these games.

...And I like the original format: watching the travel. That was part of the charm.

Where did you get the "Das Boot" soundtrack?

Good to see you back! I left a comment on your video about how to use the Deck Gun again. Also you kept losing your hydrophone contacts because you were facing your contact. The default hydrophones were side mounted on the hull, which is why you're able to detect ships while surfaced, but this also meant that directly in front or directly behind you'll have difficulty hearing a contact.

One thing I'd like to see would be playing more realistically perhaps. It's a bit of a challenge at times but far more rewarding.

What I mean is that instead of just dragging a waypoint towards a contact and mashing Time Compression till you run into it (something that all current let's plays for SH5 seem to do! heh) instead take the time to try to plot out your target's course and speed and set an intercept for it knowing ahead of time where your target will be and waiting for them instead of constantly chasing after them. There's lots of resources here to help figure out how to do that and even with map contacts on it can be a fun experience.

It's just a little disappointing how none of the SH5 Let's Plays I've seen have never touched a map tool - except by accident - and never used the TDC. :)

All that said I've really enjoyed your Let's Play and am looking forward to more.

I noticed in your last video the game doesnt drop to 1TC when smoke is spotted on the horizon or a ship or plane is sighted .

If you uninstall Multiple UIs for SH5 and then go into the options file which is found at
NewUIs_TDC_X_X_X_ByTheDarkWraith\data\Scripts\Menu \TheDarkWraithUserOptions

before uninstalling
Go into the mod enabler and click on Tasks . Click on save mod profile .
Now you can uninstall all mods and put them back in the correct order by clicking on Tasks and Load mod profile .


Look for the heading
######### Message Box (SH3/4/5 modes) #########

Look for the line
#[OPTION]
#CATEGORY=Message box
#TYPE=0
#DESCRIPTION=Set time compression level to 1 on any message box text
#VALUES=

Now your game will drop to 1TC when smoke is spotted on the horizon .

There is a button (just to the right of the clock)on the top right hud which you can turn off or on anytime while playing so the game does or doesnt drop down to 1TC when messages appear in the message box .

I posted a video response to episode 7 showing how to do a plotted intercept and speed solution then follow up with a manual TDC 90 degree attack with map contacts on. Hopefully it'll help you understand better how to plot torpedo attacks and intercepts of ships for when your deck gun can't be used.

Very nice, Kylania. I had often wondered about knots being nautical miles, but distances being in meters, particularly for torpedoes. I should like to choose three targets out of a convoy, and firing on the furthest away first, so calculate ranges & speeds as to have three torpedo impacts on three different targets all occur at the same time. This helps make another step in that goal possible.

Actually that 90 degree attack works perfectly for convoys allowing you to hit the entire first row of ships at the same time. Simply set your scope on the 000 gyroangle and fire as the ships pass it. Due to the angles you'll fire at the farthest ships first but all the torpedoes will hit at the same time.

Could the ctds be because the ships were respawning before the one before went down:hmmm:

Anyway - there was some thinking that the scapa ctd (many has had this) was due to OHII - perhaps this could be fixed by clearing out some of those spawn nodes:hmmm:

I've also decided to stop playing for now due to the CTDs. The game is amazing, in my opinion, and has the potential to become the best in the SH series, but right now I'm too afraid of random and unpredictable CTDs to try spending hours on a patrol that might just crash as I'm plotting a target's course or getting ready to fire. I'll keep checking in just to see what the modders are up to, since right now they're the only ones who can take the game to a whole new level, what with TDW's relentless work.:salute:

I understand your frustration but I hate to see you leave SH5. You should try and explore some alternatives or something, maybe just restart the campaign without the mega mod.

Oh lord, that would be a horrible choice. :) As gallant as attacks on Scapa Flow might be, they aren't what the u-boat service was designed for. Also SH5 has issues with CTDs in harbors, so they are really best left alone.

One thing though - when the watch crew call out smoke on the horizon, are they using the map bearing or the boat bearing?


Not to drag this out but......your "boat bearing" is the definition of Relative bearing. Aka Bearings Relative to the bow of your Boat. Contacts are always called out (and plotted) on relative bearings. Hope that makes sense.

Listen, J-squared, I just want to tell you that you owe me $30 and that my family now hates you, and here's why: If it hadn't been for you and your hilarious Let's Plays giving me not only much entertainment but, more importantly, a great preview of what the tireless modders of this community have done to make this sim excellent, I'd have still been going "nah, I still have my old trusty SHIII and I'll be damned if I'll be going through all of that again just to get the latest version."

Also, my family might actually get to see me occasionally instead of having to endure yet another several months of me whistling old German tunes from the 30s and muttering to myself in German which, around these parts, simply isn't done.

So thanks a pants load, J-squared, you ruined my life!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be adjusting my mod soup again for a bit and setting out for yet another patrol of the North Sea.

It's quite boring to watch people play without manual targeting because there's no challenge to such a style. I wish there were more people who posted videos of themselves playing as realistically as possible (for example all difficulty sliders on except external camera to show off some nice explosions). It could also serve to teach the newcomers some useful lessons.

Watching someone point a periscope at a ship, press fire and then magically achieve a big explosion is not all that interesting.

I agree.
The same is also true for manual targeting with the deck-gun. I will never understand why people using the dumb AI instead of just manual targeting.

Multi-monitor support: broken.
Although SH5 will run at multi-mon resolutions no problem, the Hor+/Vert+ first-person view shows only solid black. Since most of the gameplay relies on this perspective, this is a terminal flaw.
The free cam is simply Vert- though.
