Your computer has a device called Sound Recorder. Open it up and go into SH3/Data/Sound, then open the file Submarine_diesel_exterior. With sound recorder you can adjust the volume to your liking. I personally turned it down, not up.
This will mainly affect the sound on the bridge. The only way to get a much louder sound inside is with FlakMonkey's New Interiors.
...thanks to both of you!
SS, i dont know where to find sound recorder. i have xp home edition. i have never heard of it before?

Try looking under Start>Programs>Accessories. It might be under Accessories or under one of the submenus, but usually it's in there somewhere. It's still under Accessories in Win7 and I don't think anything's changed.

You're welcome.
I don't think it should cause any problems, if you do what Steve describes all you're doing is altering the volume of the .wav file the game plays to give you the sound of the diesels when you are surfaced and not standing down inside the boat. As long as you don't change the name or location of the file, it should be fine.
I've swapped out complete .wav files for sounds I like better than what was there originally, as long as the name/location in the game folder is the same (and the new file is not so huge in size that it bogs down the system) all that happens is that I hear the new sound instead of the old one. In theory you could record yourself making 'vroom vroom' sounds and make a .wav file of it named Submarine_diesel_exterior.wav and put it in the data/Sound file in place of the original, and then in the game you'd hear yourself making 'vroom vroom' sounds every time the diesels were running. :D

thats interesting....the vrooom vrooom. i was thinking more of a chug chug chug. i have been 'adjusting' today aswell and also installed a sound mod to give the diesels more meat. i love that gentle rocking purr they have at a steady 7knots. i fall asleep, like Johanne, for a little snooze with these diesels purring in the background. and i think with better speakers than the ones i have - they are 8 year old desk top's - it will sound deeper too.
some great sound effects in there too - some i have yet to hear in-game.
cheers!
