The article found on this page of Kommersant ( http://www.kommersant.ru/vlast/?IssueID=60853 ) and dated 21 Feb 2011, says that North Korea conducted test launches of six missiles. All of them were launched in the direction of Russia ... Pyongyang did not inform Moscow of the launches. During the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, Pyongyang launched the first rocket at 2230. At midnight came the turn of the Taepodong-2 strategic missile. They fell near the cities of Nakhodka and Vladivostok. The nighttime rocket launches were a complete surprise for Moscow. According to defense officials, they initially gleaned information about the Korean rocket launches from the Internet. The Dnepr radar station, located in the Irkutsk province, was unable to track the launches. The commandant of the Irkutsk district told Kommersant that he had not heard of the rocket launches prior to the interview. "I don't know what fell or if anything happened, but our armed forces are the best in the world." Meanwhile, according to a report from Krasnaia Zdezda, the Russian military newspaper, the Irkustsk radar station is shut down every Tuesday to switch equipment so that they don't send incorrect information.

I hope a Russian reader can help me out with the Google translation, but that is what I got from it. Geez, this is either a sure way to threaten "accidental" start of World War 3, or confirmation of just how far the Russky defense forces have fallen.

It's also a demonstration of the DPRK leadership's sheer intransigence and/or lunacy. Diminished military or not, Russia ain't someone you go poking at for giggles.

Assuming there's no funny business going on between the 2 of them, there is a precidence for the Soviet air-defence failure.

Heres what I got from the article, really tough to read... if anybody fluent in russian wants to check it out, maybe they can make heads or tails of this:

From "Weekly Analytical journal" (And they have an Iphone app)

North Korea launches a strategic training and five tactical missiles. They all flew to Russia <...>. Pyongyang has not notified Moscow about missile <...>. In the night from Tuesday to Wednesday <...> first rocket launch held in Pyongyang 22.30 <...>. At midnight came the turn of a strategic missile Taepodong-2 <...>. They fell in the Russian 200-mile economic zone (near the cities of Nakhodka and Vladivostok).

For Moscow, the nightly missile launches were a complete surprise. According to Kommersant, the original information about the start of the Korean Missile Defense and the General Staff of Russia drew the internet <...>. Radar Dnipro <...>, located in the Irkutsk region <...>, could not track launches <...>. The commandant of the Irkutsk garrison Sergei Lysevsky <...> told Kommersant that he first heard about Korean missile launch. "I do not know where and what was dropped, and whether it fell, but our armed forces are the best in the world" - said Mr. Lysevsky. On the question of whether missile radar spotted "Dnepr" <...> answered the question: "Are you not of intelligence? How do you know where the tracking station?" I will not say anything. "

Russian Chief of General Staff Yuri Baluyevsky <...> only after nine hours after the start-up commented on the incident. He said that the entire "North Korea has launched ten missiles," while failing to specify that they were behind the rocket. According to him, the class launched missiles will only be when we have received "data technical means of verification".

Kommersant, July 6, 2006
"Non-combat crew on radar" Dnepr "that near Irkutsk, <...> replace each other every 12 hours <...>. problem Dnipro - find escort <...> ballistic missiles are going to visibility zone station, and give accurate information about this <...>. Major Maxim Ulisko <...> four years is alert to the command post of the Dnipro <...>. biggest stress of combat crew call external interference in the work station: a power outage <...>. "And most of all, I do not like to watch on Tuesdays, when there shall be additional planned operational switching equipment to prevent the issuance of false information in the main center <...>. Each time it is a great psychological and physical exertion, so that happens, you come home and fall "- recognized Maxim.

Newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda, February 16, 2011
Five years ago, North Korea struck his volley around the world. Russian journalists is even more impressed if ignorance Army General Baluyevsky that anything intelligible to say about him could not. And only now, it seems, everything cleared up. Koreans fired on Tuesday, and on Tuesdays, it turns out, our radar, set to monitor foreign missile in the East, is occupied by some mysterious, but significant "switch to prevent the issuance of false information", why battle the calculation still falls to the ground. Not surprisingly, then Irkutsk "Dnepr" could not give any information - neither false nor true. Surprising that anti-missile radar is a legitimate and stable "output." After all, if a real war getting "data technical means of verification" of missiles a day after its launch, most likely, will have none. However, perhaps our intelligence has verified information that on Tuesday the war just will not start.

Competently about computers and the girl
"The commander of the Operations Command Aerospace Defense (ASD), Lieutenant-General Valery Ivanov:

- Computer ... this thing, let's say ... Still, the stronger the program, more than himself, so his memory, the issues at stake, and this means that the competence of your computer, then, say something, respectively, and information ... right? ... more. And maybe more. We behold, there was talk that so ... There well here we are talking there: control system. This is the same too, and people! This command points, it means that come into service. And of course, that today the old antiquated method of drawing, as we had painted on the plate target, there were planshetisty-girl ... <...>. Already a virtually have no <...>. We are contributing the same this ... original! Is that right? Yes? After all, we ... of our information from our decision, from our expertise and automation depends on the decision the senior executive. "

Radio Ekho Moskvy, January 29, 2011
"After <...> APEC <...> Dmitry Medvedev flew from Japan <...>. IL-96 took a course in the radar zone of the Far Eastern Association of the Red Air Force and Air Defense <...>. at the command post < ...> all agog <...>, aboard Russia is number one in the area of responsibility of the Coastal Brigade SAI <...>.

- Discovered number one target, the azimuth - 150 range - 320 - loudly radar operator reported an ordinary Sergei Nazarov <...>.

On a large plate <...> planshetisty already put the first points of collotype and begin to cause the flight path <...>. At the command post of the Khabarovsk electronic parts <...> sure reception aerial target of state carried planshetisty Sergeant Marina Losevich and Corporal Ian Kolodij that reads Corporal Larissa Chugunova and the duty to respect Warrant Officer Larisa Tatarinov <...>.

- Dmitry Medvedev has got, if I may say so, in our women's embrace of the radar, and until the Zeya we were not allowed - shares his impressions Corporal Chugunova <...>.

This completes a typical day planshetistov, November 14, 2010.

The newspaper of the Eastern Military District, "Suvorov onslaught, November 27, 2010
Since the Soviet Union planshetist works in the army and the computer and monitor. Due to the absence of the latter in defense as such, the commander looks at a large piece of plexiglass, in which smart, but also a neat military (and, as a rule, this is a girl) must quickly draw spetskarandashom-collotype trajectory goal, managing to listen to that cry to him about a radar operator. So it all is and still. And it seems to us that General Ivanov perfectly represents the actual balance of forces these girls to computers in the military forces throughout the country. After the Moscow team chair, he moved from the Far East of the Red Banner of association and only the day before the flight Medvedev - 13 November. If we discard the obviously seditious and defeatist assumption that in the Primorye and Khabarovsk, with our defense intelligent computers on actual fact there is, but to track the flight of our advanced computer they trust the president simply did not dare, it will recognize that the generals are still tempted to Strongly embellish the truth, which remains the most often that neither is antiquated.

The troops defended from death row for five hours
"The bomber, a bomb exploded at Moscow's Domodedovo airport, served in the Interior Troops of Russia", - said <...> Chief of Internal Troops Nikolai Rogozhkin <...>. "He (Yevloyev) served only three months in Vladivostok militia regiment. But he was seconded to the state of health "- said Rogozhkin. He added that Yevloyev complained of an ulcer." Even his countrymen have turned away from him because of what he pretended to an ulcer, "- he said."

RIA Novosti, February 15, 2011, 11.15 MSK
"As a result of scrutiny of the message found that the suicide bomber Mohammed Yevloyev in the internal troops of Russia has never served," - said the <head of the press service of the MVD Vasily> Panchenkov <...>. From 2004 to present in the Primorye Territory in the internal troops <...> had served two soldiers with the surname Evloyev. "However, their personal data - name, date of birth - do not correspond exactly set the personal data of the suicide bomber Yevloyev Magomed" - he added " .

RIA Novosti, February 15, 2011, 16.13 MSK
It took just five hours, Colonel Panchenkov to check and refute a message on the Army General Rogozhkin service Domodedovo killers in the army Interior Ministry. It is not clear why the chief had the morning to make a sensational informagenstva unverified information, and even with details of Vladivostok, simulation, ulcers, and his countrymen, who "turned away"? Is it just for that afternoon to disavow it as a false rumor? If all tested as simply and quickly, then why could not order a subordinate to do this before? Impression that the other channels for the issuance of orders, in addition to RIA Novosti, the commander left.

Major soldiers would not hurt
"In Taman Brigade soldiers allowed to beat officers.

In the battle straps are not important, especially if the fight - martial <...>. Soldiers and officers to learn and compete to win the enemy without weapons <...>.

Converged officers and sergeants, contractors and soldiers conscripts. Those three minutes that battle is going, subordination forgotten.

Chief referee Colonel Alexander Arlamenko:

- Who picked who has been a millstone selection <...> together performing and officers and soldiers. If the soldier beats the officer, he goes directly to those (finalnye. - "Power") competition.

Army hand to hand combat - one of the toughest martial arts <...>. Allowed to kill the enemy in the stalls. "

Just read the article and it is from 2006 referring to the 2006 missile incident where they landed in the Sea of Japan. Therefore not hard to land them also into the 200 mile Russian economic zone. Therefore in that case it might eb quite possible that the launches didn't show up on russian radar as they were going in the wrong direction.

Xabba ... and TLAM ... thanks for the Russian contributions. It's a good point about the missiles possibly evading radar detection by the Russians, on account of their direction of flight. It's awfully odd that Kommersant chose to post the story on the website with the title "No War on Tuesdays" in early 2011. Very slow news week I guess LOL ... I see they have taken the story off their front page today, though, or maybe a new edition rolled out today (Sunday) anyway.

Like a Doppler Filter? Seems strange since an incoming bird might try to jam radars using the trick of rebroadcast of radar signal to give a false range reading.

With no Doppler filter they should have at least detected them once they reached the apogee of their arc.
