Even alone it would be a two-day side trip, just to see an aquatic amusement park.

Last year we took the kids to Disneyland and took the Surfliner down to SD, so we did SD last year :)

The fleet boat was top on MY list already :)

We have a 4.5 YO and a 7 YO, so we're sorta limited food wise to places that you'd wanna go with a 4 YO (we eat out rather more than we should, so the kids are actually pretty good in restaurants).

I'm always keen on local foodie places.

any suggestions?

make sure to wear a flower in your hair :O:

Just across the Bay Bridge, you'll find the USS Hornet and the Alameda Naval Air Museum.

If you are a record collector, check out Amoebia records, specialized on indie records, but also tons of used stuff for reasonable prices from all music genres - though it's better to check them out on your own as they are located on Haight Street, not really kid's environment...;)

Don't miss the Ferry Market then. It's a farmer's market/food court type thing with all local foods. I had one of the best sandwiches of my life there - local salami with local butter and cornichons on fresh baked sourdough. Simple but so good.

Nice. Thanks!

My wife's cousin just moved back to Greenwich Village from Lombard St. in SF, and she's been sending us "hole in the wall" places to try that she thinks are not too fancy for little kids.

I knew about Hornet, I was gonna try that as well (though we've been on Intrepid many times (my father in law was surgeon on her), another Essex Class is still cool)).

Americans think 200 years is a long time.

Europeans think 200 miles is a long drive.

Point in case, (sorry bout OT): Dating a girl who had many relatives from Wales and England. Her uncle and family came over here (Cleveland), and as we're all sitting around at dinner, he asks "hey, maybe we could go see the Grand Canyon tomorrow?"

EDIT: Sorry I have no info on San Fran, just thought I'd share that anecdote.

Last year we took the kids to Disneyland....

Last i checked (maybe about 6 or 8 months ago), they were up to 80 dollars for one adult ticket. That place isn't worth that kind of dough.

Perhaps the trolley lines, Fisherman's Wharf, the cable cars, Alcatraz, Filbert Street, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Japanese Tea Gardens. San Fran is teeming with attractions; one of the more scenic cities in America.

It is worth every penny with little kids of the right age.

They (Disney) are experts there at what my wife called a "walletectomy," but the kids loved it. We had fun, too, actually. We'll likely go back before they get too old, too, as it is an easy trip.

Having little kids changes everything...

You can get an annual disneyland pass for under $200, even if daily is $76 (just checked).

Yeah, looks awesome for hayseeds like us living in BF noplace :)

Lots of stuff to do that the kids won't mind. NM is great for outdoors stuff, and for artsy stuff and shopping in Santa Fe, but light most everything else.

I don't have kids, but I do have a Fiancee that I don't think has ever been. May have to suck it up and spend the cash before we move out of this hell hole.

The Academy of Sciences is pretty cool, and it makes a visit to Golden Gate Park more than worthwhile. Since the new building opened, the Steinhart Aquarium & Morrison Planetarium are better than ever.

http://www.calacademy.org/

Also in the park, very close by, the Japanese Tea Gardens and the De Young Museum.

Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach are pleasant except for the lack of parking. To me those neighborhoods are better for walking (with hills, in N. Beach).

The end of Fiddler On The Roof. The Jewish peasants are clearing out of Tsarist Russia, and this line crops up:
"Your going to New York America? We're going to Chicago America! We'll be neighbors!"

But it's true. The next city out of Salt Lake is Las Vegas, a mere 350 miles.

Sorry, didn't miss this before, but was reading it on the phone, and didn't feel like typing on it :)

We're stating near Fisherman's Wharf (closer to Pampanito, actually)at the suggestion of my wife's cousin who lived there for 20 years before moving back to NYC a couple years ago (she thought there was more kid stuff right out the door to do). We're not planning on even renting a car I think.

I'm copying all these to my phone, too, so I have them at all times.

Regarding the distance thing above, yeah, the next city from ABQ north is Denver (444 miles), West is Phoenix (329 miles), South is El Paso (a crap town compared to Denver or Phoenix, frankly it doesn't even count...) is 229 miles. East? Oklahoma City, perhaps (555 miles)?

Stuff is spread out, that's for sure :)

Watch out for the homeless/ panhandlers. They are really aggressive and may get in your face.:shifty: Fisherman's wharf is a lot of fun, you could spend three days there. The Pampanito, O'brien, maritime museum, tons of places to eat!:yeah:, take a bay cruise under the bridge.

When I took my son there, we didn't get a rental car and we just walked everywhere. We took BART up to the wharf, then took a trolley to where the hotel was.

Enjoy paying pelosi taxes:shifty:.

Useful info. I'm not one to ever give to bums.

I remember passing a bum sleeping on the West Side (NYC) as a kid, and my little sister asked why he was sleeping there. My dad said, " That's a wino, honey." My sister of course said, "Dad!" Dad's classic answer?

"That's OK, honey, he knows he's a wino."

Yeah, they are really pesky at some of the out-door eating establishments. They will roam in the dining areas! There's a chowder place right by the Pampanito, that this one homeless guy wouldn't leave alone.:shifty:

And the Jeremiah O'Brien! I got to see the Pampanito, but not the O'Brien sadly :( I did, however, get to speak with a former crewmember (I believe) who was giving tourists some of the boat's history.

We was there last November, but we didn't really tour very much as we were focused more on my grandparents' anniversary.

I was there last May on a business trip with my boss, and he isn't exactly the type to spend a long time poking around on old boats, so I missed out on the O'Brien.

You can't believe how hot those engines get. It had to be at least 120 degrees down there.

We sailed through the Bay, a little ways past the Golden Gate Bridge, and then came back. They must have only been doing a couple knots, because it took 2 or 3 hours. We had lunch, free beer, a brass band, and they did a wreath tossing memorial for some of the original crew who had passed on. It was a great day.

I'll post pics shortly.

Funny, I'm also going to SF and I'm also hoping to make it out to the Pampanito. I'll be in town on business so sadly I don't think I'll have that much time to check out the sights, but I'm hoping to at least make it out to the Pampanito - probably on the 24th or 25th.

Wow, I never knew about these cruises - or that O'Brien was in seagoing condition for that matter. That's really cool and now definitely goes on my to-do list - hopefully I'll wind up in SF one summer then! That's a great way to raise money for her preservation, too.
