Several People have told me not to buy SH3 from steam and to get a hard copy.
So my Question is what is the big deal?
Its cheaper. But what is the downside?
I cant find a hard copy anywhere (Exept Amazon) but im not intrested in waiting any longer for it to come in the mail!!
So what is the downside to digitally downloading it from steam?
Thanks in advance :salute:

My SH3 is from Steam, and I have had no problems with it at all. Unlike the "hard" copy I originally bought, which was unpatched and laden with Starforce.
You do have to be connected to the Internet on startup, but I do not find that onerous.

Hard copyies now though are patched all the way up and dont have starforce in them which is good. Besides you only wait about a week.

I don't like Steam for two reasons. First, I do like having the thing in my hands (though that is changing due to my discovery of massive music downloads).
Second is the fact that Steam refused to sell to me because my location is outside of the United States. I live in Utah.

That said, it's like the SH3-SH5 arguments. What's best is what works for you. Many Steam users love it, so any arguments against are based on emotions, not facts.

So let me see if I've got this straight: The SH-III DVDs being sold on Amazon do not have Starforce on them? Because I've always wanted to try my hand at the game. (I've only played SH-IV, which I enjoy very much. It's hard to beat at today's prices, but fear of infecting my rig with a Starforce crap-circus has kept me away. That's all gone now?

I know the Steam version is clean.
People here in the past have mentioned that if you buy via Amazon, you need to make sure, if you are buying through an Amazon Marketplace seller, they are not selling the original, pre-patch, still-Starforce software.
As it has not been an issue for me, I must admit I have not read those threads carefully, but they are out there if you search.
The original DVD comes only with basic instruction and a fold-out keyboard map. So you aren't missing much if you buy via download.
I was familiar with the game, of course, before buying via Steam. I am sure I would have considered a hard copy buy more carefully, otherwise.

Well who doesn't? :D
AFAIK the one downside to buying from Steam is that you are limited to one game installation. Which means if you install GWX over it, for instance, you no longer have the stock version, and have to do a complete uninstall/reinstall if you ever want to go back to it or try out non-GXW mods.
Disclaimer: I don't have the Steam version, I'm going by what I recall other Steam users have said about it.

That's one of the minor downsides I've found with my steam install, I would like to have a running install, and a Test install. But it's no biggy, using JSGME it's not hard to revert.
The only real downsides are the lag that is induced between SHC launching SH3 via steam. SHC launches SH3, SHC then closes. The steam engine then tries to connect to steam, and that can take a while if your ISP is flaky like mine, and for some reason SHC opens up again before the actual SH3 gets launched. Therefore, if I have auto-rollback enabled, Everything that was optioned in SHC gets undone. So I have to be careful using rollback, and my changes to the cfg files.

Owned a Steam copy of SH3 for a number of years now. Swapped all kinds of mods in and out of it. Works as advertised, can't complain.

I got mine from the Ubisoft website, already upgraded to v1.4b or whatever. $10 or so and quick download, i've re-installed it several times, and you don't need the internet on startup :D

mmm, I cant get my Steam version to load Gwx and I cannot see where it has stuck the files or folder if it indeed has. Wish I had a Hard copy disc as SH5 that I have looks totally differant on my drive:wah:

You can get a hard copy of SH3 from Amazon real cheap these days, and if you go through the link in my sig Subsim will get a cut as well. Unless the 'SH5' in your post is a typo, don't expect SH3 to look anything like SH5. If it was a typo, GWX will make a difference in how the game looks, but there are also add-on mods that change it dramatically.

I meant how it looks in its folder on my drive rather than IN the actual game, sorry for my bad typing/explanation mate.
