View Full Version : Russia plans $650bn defence spend up to 2020
Eight nuclear submarines, 600 jets and 1,000 helicopters feature in plans to renew Russia's military by 2020, priced at 19tn roubles (£400bn; $650bn).
One hundred warships are also due to be bought in, including two helicopter carriers, in addition to two already being purchased from France.
The submarines will carry the Bulava missile, despite recent test failures.
Analysts say the ambitious programme only makes sense if the military upgrades its training and recruitment.

Much of the new spending will go on Russia's long under-funded navy. Apart from the submarines, 35 corvettes and 15 frigates will be ordered.
At least that part is realistic. No real need for those Heli Carriers except in the Pacific where Russia has a few islands.
Time long overdue to scrap those Sovermenny DDGs. Outdated with poorly designed engines.
The Kirovs and Slava need to go too, they are too expensive to operate. Maybe keep one as a Carrier Escort (Not sold on the Russians needing a carrier though).
The Udaloys need badly to be refitted with the N-27 or another modern missile but I doubt it will happen.

This is my post. And, its far more than 700 billion more like 2 trillion. Not just "defense", overall military spending.

I thought you were the one now insisting on staying on-topic. The topic here is Russia's current military program.
If you actually read the threads here you might find that sometimes we actually discuss the merits of a particular country's military assets on their own worth, not turn everything into a diatribe against one particular nation, philosophy or mindset.
What is your actual opinion on Russia's new programs? Or do you have one? I admit I don't know enough about it to truly discuss it, but that doesn't mean I jump on my pet hobby-horse every chance I get.
On the other hand it seems as if you're rapidly becoming one.

Well I my opinion of Russia is that though they have a corrupted government and sort of mafia state politics, They don't use their military for imperialist ventures which I like. I also a a big fan of Russian military technology, going from the T-34 to the AK47 to the SU-27. I think their S400's and now S2000's can face various threats from so called "air superiority". I also love the Russian/soviet torpedo cruise missile technology though I forget what its exactly called.

Sure their fleet is old, kinda helps if you take care of it.

maybe they should clean up the first mess before they make a new one.

I'm a fan of technology in general, and gaming both sides of any conflict has been my main hobby for years.

Well Edward seems like a nice lad with a good head on his shoulders, but for some reason I've always fancied Harry. He always looks like he's been bad little boy and needs a good spanking.
And of course I'm assuming he comes at a discount, being a spare and all. Not to mention the ginger thing. :O:

What happened to those 6 carriers I heard they were going to try to make sometime in 2008? (OK, we knew that the chances of them really getting all six are slim to none, but even 1 or 2 fixed-wing capable carriers would be a huge boost to their flexibility that's worth shooting for).
The submarines will carry the Bulava missile, despite recent test failures.
Well, guess they'll have to bull through with it.

Is that the 105?
Be interesting with plastic replacing the wood how rugged it is, or whether it'll be another Mattel toy like the earlier M-16.
