HOWEVER:
"Do not click download if you are updating just one computer: A smaller, more appropriate download is now available on Windows Update (http://www.update.microsoft.com/). The best way to ensure you get Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is by turning on the Automatic Updates feature. You can use our step-by-step instructions (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Turn-automatic-updating-on-or-off) or, if you prefer, let us do it for you (http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9709473). If Windows Update is not offering you the option to install the service pack, see KB 2498452 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2498452). If you are encountering a problem when installing the service pack from Windows update, see Troubleshoot problems installing a service pack for Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 (http://windows.microsoft.com/troubleshootwindows7sp1)."

You don't need to d/l the whole thing, read what i wrote in my O.P.

Edit: unless you want to back up to disc then you're stuck with 900+MB.

When using the update function, the download is only between 90-150 Mb.

If the update is slow, the leaked files from last month are identical to the ones now published...

My internet connection won't allow for files that big, I will have to wait for a torrent link whereby if the link breaks it will simply reconnect and carry on, I wonder if it will become available on disk, or maybe the later Win 7 disks will come with it.:hmmm:

1mb,it sucks!

That's exactly my connection for about 25 bucks :D. Well I have free upgrade for 3 months to 2Mb when I subscribed cable at a ridiculously funny promotional charge of US$3.50 a month for a whole year. US$3.5 month that's so cheap even here lol. Of course I don't get HBO but that's not my intention anyway. News is my kind of fun.

Feedback regarding experiences? The German web is full of reports just calling out problems, problems, and more problems. Broken installations, interrupted downloads, games no longer working if DirX 9, error messages stopping installations. Spend the past hour to read, and it reads like a horror story?! Win7 64Bit is said to be more often effected !? Two German magazine sites I had where they recommend not to install the SP1 !?

HBO, just drag to the virus and other debris, browsing, and you just pay your bills you can get by with less, say 10mb, heavier applications of at least 30/30 mb, I run the 100/100 right now, but considering an upgrade at 1gb per second, it becomes a difference and now I pay $50.

No links, I was just skimming from site to site, and from link to link. My IE is set so that all history and passwords and cache gets deleted every time I close the program.

I started with Google.

Yesterday I tried to install the SP1 for Win 7 on the laptop of an older gentleman, a friend of my parents, I help him with his new toy. Installation failed after 40 minutes, . But the device and the installed Windows is just three weeks old, and he really does not do any suspicious stuff with it, and does not play. I deleted all preinstalled software ( players, trial versions) myself before handing him the system, and it was clean of any waste files or filled temporary folders, and well-defragmentated. Dowload/installation stopped at 24%, then the HD stopped working, the download progress bar froze, and it stayed like that for 25 minutes. Since there was no HD activity and no indsicvation that anything took place in the background, and the CPU dial also showed to be frozen, I rebooted - but I had to interrupt power supply to manage that, mouse and keyboard did not react anymore.

I started a file structure- and HD surface analysis via a tool, but it showed nothing. The machine worked well afterwards.

I try again next week.

See my original post in this thread,
all you need to do is have automatic updates enabled in WIN 7 and it will automatically d/l and install the most crucial component of the SP 1.
I can vouch for this as that is what happened on my machine about 3 or 4 days ago.
The whole file size is about 900-odd MB, but like i said in my original post, you don't need to install the whole thing, Auto Updates will look after you.

I did ran the Windows Update. ;) Never manually install Windows updates.

I am not alone:

One guy even had exactly the same problem description like I gave ("25%...")

The speed here is 256k broadband but I am outside the maximum range of the exchange so the connection often drops out, it will reconnect by itself after a few seconds though it can last for hours, the only other option is dialup but that sucks, this overall is far better!!:yep: (living in the country does have it's downside)

There's always people with problems, just the nature of PC's.

Especially laptops. :O:

Downloaded and installed without issues, didn't even give it a second thought when the notification popped up.

Installed it on said notebook today, with deactivated antivirus, firewall and UAC down. Also, the mentioned second important update got installed alone, and first.

That way it worked out, but not without a minor victim. IE8 refused to work on most sites, shutting IE down with an error message. After 1 hour of analysis I found that one of the addons, the flash-player, seemed to have suffered damage or was no longer compatible, making the IE to stop quit whenever there were flash vids on the screen. Reinstalling the latest version of it manually solved it.
