View Full Version : Third trip to Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal.
The trip starts at Port Said through the canal, a few lakes where there are DD's that you have to take out of play, at one of the pictures so there is a label "Mark" 1, "Mark" 2 (Land units) behind them are three DD as you can get away in periscope depth, otherwise it is a lot of water but no traffic further down the Red Sea before the Gulf Von Aden so there could be some commercial ships, this trip was in mid-1940, do it in 1941.1942, you get resistance from Egyptian patrol boats and aircraft, and any mines,

Oh good grief! Do you ever get tired of playing an arcade game?
Just because the game lets you be superman doesn't mean you have to.

Just because the game lets you be superman doesn't mean you have to. Arcade game, I take as an insult, but since you mentioned the word superman, which I see as a superlative, so it is even, I did this just for fun, which you sure have figured out already.

Give Vendor the town name.
I'll bet he figures it out, and sends you a picture.

How about a Great Lakes cruise next? Sir, thanks for the very gift that was present, with these words, which is a prerequisite for survival!

No, I didn't figure that out. I apologize. I got tired of blowing things up just for fun about 20 years ago.

Those great lakes missing makes me think of another error in SH3.
The map of the Netherlands is wrong. There are two large pieces of land that didn't exist yet during WWII. It is now our twelfth province, but one piece of it was created in '42 (so that's a little hard to incorporate in the game) and another piece of land was created in the 50's. It has little impact on the game, since your U-boat will never go there, but the look of the map still annoys me. Too bad Ubi didn't do a bit more research.

The game maps are based on what I suspect is the SRTM data, a freely-available set of terrain elevation files taken by space shuttle radar. These were acquired in the late 90s, so that's why that represents a world that's obviously not from WWII.
The other thing of note is that SHIII only models water that is at sea level in the real world (again, as per SRTM data). This is why the great lakes are waterless - the real things are well above sea level. It's possible to edit them in, but the editing would be a little trickier than it initially looks. You'd have to lower all the terrain around them as well and remove things like rapids and the Niagara Falls - effectively making the waterways flat. The flat water modeling does make some sense though - the game mostly takes place in the ocean...

Thanks for the info, so that explains why it is problematic to realistically add the Great Lakes, but the pieces of land in the Netherlands I'm talking about are already below sea-level, infact, they used to be just that: sea. So just converting that wouldn't be that much of a problem. Not that it is particularly important though, just something I noticed.
