View Full Version : Water Vibrating or Wiggling when camera is turned.

Hello all.
I just picked up the Uboat expansion for SH4. I had not played SH4 for a few weeks now, though it has remained installed, but I think something very new and irritating has happened to my water. :damn:
When turning the view, in any mode, the water sort of quickly ripples. Camera still, water normal, turn the camera - ripples fast and weird, stop moving, goes back to normal. This can be seen above water as well as below.
This is quite odd looking and I would think I would have noticed it before now - which makes me wonder if its the addon.
Either way, the game runs fine other than that glitch. Drivers are updated, Video cards are ATI 4850's in crossfire. I have tried many changing many options to no avail, except for one....if I disable VSync, the problem gets WORSE. The water it virtually jumping up and down when I turn my periscope/view.
Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Vanilla game issue.
Vanilla has LOTS of issues. Many will say, play vanilla first to get your feet wet and then D/L a mod.
My opinion is vanilla will traumatize a person to this game and make them never want to play it again. So D/L a mod right away, and avoid vanilla.
Large mods you'll want to investigate:
Fall of the Rising Sun (FOTRS)
Real Fleet Boat (RFB)
Trigger Maru Overhauled (TMO)
Game Fixes Only (GFO)
Look in the mod forum, their all there.

Absolutely agree, though I have played vanilla for a while, and have no mods installed as of yet. The game certainly has its share of bug and oddities.
Any chance any one of those mods would iron out this magic vibrating water issue? Cause its damn distracting once you notice it. Wish I could just ignore it, but I just can't once I notice it.

All of them will i think. This was one of the first hot issues that set off the community when SH4 was in its infancy. (one of the other ones being the "sub on rails" effect. Also fixed)
Sorry to but in, but I have to ask. What is the "sub on rails" effect?

Sweet, I'll give them a whirl.
Damn these developers some times. Can't I buy a damn game that doesn't need people on Ye Olde Interwebs to fix their crap for them? How the hell does magic jiggling water pass the Q&A dept? In a SUB GAME? lol
I did try one mod which didn't help. The 'Real Environment Mod'. It sort of helped, as it generally smoothed out the water so the effect was less visible, but it was still there.
Thanks for the replies.

I've had that happen a few times also. Usually when I come out of high TC and am nearing a port. The water currents seem to move very rapidly.

You should be able to clear it out by hitting Cntrl-N while at the external cam, but this also resets the weather to clear.

What is this vanilla u all talk about, i have this issue 2 but this doesn't really bother me.
And i do not have any mod called vanilla installed that could cause it.
Therefore , u have a confused man ...

Vanilla is the stock game, straight out of the box, as the publisher released it.

I can see your point there. I'd suggest that after a player has played the game with whatever mods they use for a while, they should uninstall all the mods, and play the stock game. It really makes one appreciate all the work that went into modding the game.

Sorry to but in, but I have to ask. What is the "sub on rails" effect?
The sub is unaffected by the sea state. As the waves get higher the sub rides absolutely smoothly, as if "on rails", so the bow and stern might be inside two high waves while the midsection is in the air. Sometimes the entire sub will be out of the water.

Ahh....
I thought it might be some kind of turning issue.

I like the way you put that. :DL

Thanks - its just too true with PC games lately :wah:
So, since there are just so many interesting looking mods out there, anyone have a recommendation for a few compatible ones to use?
I am using ver 1.5 with the Uboat addon.
Basically my most desired change is the watter ripple bug - it really bothers the hell out of me. But enhanced realism, missions, depth charges that sound like they are actually blowing up under water , etc, would interest me. I like my simulations to be pretty close to the real thing.
I think most people here play either TMO+RSRDC or RFB+RSRDC. I happen to use RFB, but that isn't a slam against TMO. I like the game to be about as realistic as possible. Unfortunately, there are limits to what can be changed here. For me deviations in the historical campaign are not too bad, but the physics being messed up really bothers me. :stare:
Most of the late versions of the mods are for v1.5, so you're all set. Also, make sure you get the JSGME mod enabler to install them. It will save you a lot of trouble. :)

TMO, Tiger Maru Overhaul, RFB, Real Fleet Boats and FOTRS Fall of the rising Sun. are the most popular super mods. They fix many many things about the game and are really the only way to go. Better graphics, game play, user interface, etc. You really need one of them to enjoy the game.
GFO Game Fix Only is for the stock game and fixes a lot of problems.
TMO (emphasis on more challenging game play) and RFB (more a realism mod)are the most popular. All three are very good and what you play is more a personal preference. Best to try them all. With JSGME they are easy to change out.
RSRDC Run Silent Run Deep the Campaign changes the convoy and task forces to very realistic levels. All the big battles and convoys are matched to the real events. If you use this best study up on the big navel battles. Can be used with the other supermods.
I use TMO with or without RSRD. Just depends on how you like to play.

Thanks all. Right now I am running TMO and RSRDC, and I enjoy the changes, especially to the atmosphere. Better ambient sounds, depth charge sounds, and viscous destroyers.
The one thing that remains to be fixed for me however, is the water issue. It is FAR less noticeable with these mods due to the smoothing and recoloring of water, darkening of the night, etc, but the verticies defining the edges of the waters peaks and shallows still jiggle with the camera a bit.
Maybe its my ATI video cards, or bad luck, don't know.
Certainly a better game for the changes.
Just have to check out RFB and Monsun to see what else is out there.

I had very much that same problem and just lived with it.
By brother-in-law had a vid card he couldn't use and sent it to me.
An older 9800GT fixed things right up. Improver FPS as well.
Newer ATI cards seem to run the game just fine from what I've heard.

Yes, It looks as though you might be able to fix that issue by playing with the various graphic enhancements that are in the checkboxes. I fixed a few by turning on and off things like 'Volumous Fog', 'detailed wave ripples', '3D ship wakes'. It took quite a few tries before I found out just how many of these things were needed to get the look I wanted and to get rid of some of the bugginess. I too have an ATI card in my desktop and it's a great card. I found that I got more results playing around with the game graphics. By the way, I get an effect through the periscope like you're describing exept that it's the land that does it, and it's not often. Anyway, Good Luck and Good Hunting
