sh4 1.5, RFB 2 + RSRDC

my soundman seems to be partly deaf. He will not detect any contacts until they are fairly close, say less than 5,000 yds, even though I can hear them very clearly. I have tried moving my crew around to put the most experienced sailor at the sonar, but it does not help.

Doing a forum search, I see this is a known problem with sh4. Has anyone found a solution or workaround?

5000 yrds or about 1 nautical mile. I think that's about right for the soundman. I can also hear the coming vessels well before I get a call out from the SO. It's why I go to the phones so much myself. I TC for 20 NM then then listen, back to TC for 20 then listen again. That way, (since I'm always zigging somewhat), we rarely miss any contacts that the SO would miss because we changed course. I have never gone into the files that far to see what the game settings actually are but it's natural to hear sounds before the SO calls out.
That's just my experiance.

Although I can hear out to about 20nm, 5000yds is about right for the game limitations, maybe a tad farther with a special ability. I always do my own listening until the target is within range for the sonar operator.
