Hi all. I was wondering if someone has cataloged the various ships docked in the ports. I have the U-Boat expansion but I'm currently playing the allied campaign. I love sneaking into ports and taking out as many ships as I can and scooting back out again.
My real beef is the utter lack of warships other than destroyers. I'm on my 8th patrol and I have yet to see anything other than 3 or 4 types of destroyers, mostly fubuki's as merchant escorts. Warship fleets always seem to be out of reach and always running at flank speed which my gato just can't match. Parking in known shipping lanes and waiting for them to come to me hasn't produced any results either except to increase the boredom.
I'm running stock with ship pack 1 and getting very bored sinking the same destroyer over and over again.
Any ideas where the warships are hiding?
Thanks
PS I've played this game for a while but I am by no means an expert

Depends on what mods you are running, but I an running RFB and RSRD and you can pretty much count of finding a couple capital ships in Truk, and sadly Truk is super easy to get in and out without firing a shot other than torpedoes. You literally have enough time to reload all tubes, and fire them before you might consider leaving.

PS I've played this game for a while but I am by no means an expertI don't know if anyone has cataloged the ships in the harbors or if that is even possible. They aren't always the same ships. They change, so I don't know how anyone could catalog them. As far as running into DDs all the time, well, they were the mainstay and the workhorses of the IJN so, in real life, there would be a higher probability of running into one of them instead of a lone BB, CV or CA. It's too in-depth to explain but, in short, many DDs looked very similar despite having seperate classifications. Small design modifications were made and thus a new classification was born. Many of which you probably wouldn't even be able to differentiate. If the ship (DD) looks exactly like a Fubuki or a Shiratsuyu, but goes by a different name, would that change your outlook? Probably not. I guess in the name of commonality, SHIV uses a limited number of names for ships that look almost exactly alike anyway. The Mods do much to address this and even add a lot of ships/escorts of their own.
As far as running Ship Pack 1, do you mean the Merchant Skinpack 1?

Thanks for all the help. I'll start hunting asap.
I'm running the stock digital download version from D2D with the ship pack 1 by miner1436 which I believe is supposed to add a variety of new ships, both merchant and warship.
I understand most escorts the Japanese had were Destroyers or destroyer escorts. By late 42 they were lucky to be able to form a flotilla of fishing boats let alone cruisers or Battleships but too much realism makes for a very boring allied campaign. I had hoped to see a light cruiser every now and then but I get nothing but destroyers 4 types as far as I can tell doing escort duty and subchasers 2 types of gunboats and the odd pt boat at ports.
I'm also a big fan of the deck gun. Anything smaller than a DD and I go at it with the deck gun. So my missions last several real time hours and my strategy is to come in fast and noisy, submerge when I see I'm being fired on, turn tail and wait for the DD's to come to me and take them out at 6-700ft with a down the throat shot then surface and take the merchants out at leisure. the DD's zig zag all the way but at that range it's hard to miss and I rarely need more than a single torpedo. Then it's hunt around for another convoy and rinse and repeat. I really like the game but the monotony is getting to me.
If anyone could recommend a total conversion mod that reworks the entire campaigns then please let me know how you play the game. I've been reluctant to do a total conversion because I've heard of problems and glitches and I wasn't sure if one would even work with my Digital download version of the game. Even with just the ship pack and US medals fix mod; I am getting more than a few game crashes. I know the digital versions are different from the standard game because I can't update the game from ubisoft. I have to get special updates from D2D only.
I'd like to try both the american and german campaigns and especially a japanese campaign. I don't get much time to play or check the forums regularly thanks to RL getting in the way ( I'm disabled and was being cared for then the wife had a stroke and I went from being cared for to being the caretaker) but Last I heard the Japanese campaign was still a work in progress. So please enlighten me as to the favorite campaign mod to try out for each side.
Thanks again guys!

Ah, OK, I think I know what you mean by Ship Pack1. That means you must be playing the stock version, which also means, there isn't much historical accuracy included. In Ship Pack1, the new, added, vessels follow a historic path/paths. That means, you need to find out where those paths were. Did you use JSGME to install the Ship Pack?
By the end of 1942, the IJN had a very large, powerful and quite formidable fleet. They had some of the most advanced destroyer designs of the time, albeit with a hurry to catch-up emphasis for ASW.
I'm currently playing TMO 2.0 with RSRDC. I think (though I'm really not sure) that TMO includes the Ship Pack already. RSRDC reworks all the convoy/TF traffic to accurate, historical dates, times and locations. I've had no problems/glitches so far. I had plenty of glitches with the stock version though.
I've never played the dark side so I don't know much about the U-Boat or Jap subs. I never heard of a Japanese campaign. That would be interesting to try.:salute:

yep playing the stock version with minimal modding due to the crashes.
After all the suggestions I got I tried to run another mission. I usually get a crash somewhere around midway or wake island and another as I near the Jap coast to complete my objectives which was always annoying but a reload of the game and the last save gets me back on track. Unfortunately when I passed midway this last time and crashed there was no more reloading. It loaded to the main screen and let me load a game but as the progress bar completed and I got the "please wait" window it crashed again.
The game is totally fracked. Can't load any save game so I deleted everything and am in the process of redownloading the game for a fresh install and starting from scratch.
My guess is it's the ship pack mod. Since it looks like it was added to a campaign mod then maybe the standalone ship mod is an older less polished version. Seems after I installed it was when the crashes started then over time the crashes were more and more frequent until the final meltdown the other day. Very depressing 30-40 hours gameplay and crew experience and special abilities all gone. Oh well, I'll give it another try then give up and play Pirates! for a while.

I used to get the crashes in load-up too. Try saving games from the control room, that drastically reduced my startup crashes.
