Just got screwed over by Intel....

My new computer parts came in, all is good, until i read to the side of the box.
it says:"For information regarding heat sinks please visit intel.com/go/thermal"

the web page said:

To offer more purchasing flexibility and reduce waste and cost for customers with other sources for heat sinks, the Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series no longer includes a heat sink in the box. The boxed Intel® Thermal Solution STS100 series is available through the same distributors and offers the same three-year limited warranty as boxed processors.


Also, it seems like its just for screwing with us high end users, because the webpage also says:
"The Intel® Xeon® processor 3500 series includes a heat sink for single-socket systems in the box."

if only I was cheaper, and i spent less money on a cheaper processor I could have gotten a heat sink:dead:

Why didn't newegg just say that no heat sink was included!!!! After all, after spending $500 on a CPU they should at least tell us no heat sink is included. :nope:

I've noticed numerous times on Newegg when they've specified that now cooler came with a CPU. Odd they would miss that one.

So basically, you got a new chip, with no cooling options at all? That sucks.

The price of Core i7 Extremes are well, Extremely high
This Xeon "only" cost me 400 something while a Core i7 extreme would cost me like $1000.
Surprisingly, newegg Canada does not have newer 32nm i7s, only older 45nm ones!
Only i7 950 and i7 870 are available, and they sell for 300 something. So the Xeon 5620 at only 80w, 32nm, 12mb L3 catch seems like a great choice.
Plus I am very interested in the new AES instruction set

If the price is right it makes sense, but normally Xeons are more expensive than their desktop counterparts. You do get the cream of the crop though, so it's a favourite for overclockers, like those "extreme" editions.

Not sure how much use AES is on an average desktop, but it can't hurt. :)


Newegg not having it doesn't surprise me; the reason they are so bloody cheap is because they buy in large batches, so they'll want to get rid of old stock first. Had some trouble here in Holland tracking down a Q9550 with the latest revisions (E0) at the time... rather expensive too.

And lack of a cooler... well, it is a server part. I'm not sure, but I doubt servers run the default cooler, with heat being such a primary concern in those machines. :hmmm:

Well Newegg is like the only good source of parts in Canada. At this price Xeons seem like a good choice.
Xeons used to come with coolers, not anymore though starting from this new generation of Xeons
As for AES, after my little brother almost discovered my porn, I encrypt all my porn now

At any rate, just get a nice 3rd party cooler, keep that Xeon nice and cool. Would advice that for any gaming rig really.
