Sorry I am new to this (played lots of other games but only just picked this up.

Ive downloaded the game (official) so should be all patched up to date as ive tried the new patches and it says my version is current.

However the problem ive got it that when I go into an enemy port most of the ships are either already destroyed or catch fire very quickly and I have to race to sink them before they sink....

It only seems to be ships rubbing up against the harbor walls which do this

What is this? is this a known fault? can I correct it?

They will crash aslower if the weather is better. The rough weather slams them around faster.

So to help prevent this, stay outside of 50km from the port (so they don't spawn) and wait for decently calm weather. You don't want really calm weather as you want some cover. And I've been thrashed on the bottom in rough water trying to return to Bergen. Had to sit in the outer Fjord for 2 days till it broke. So you need to find a happy medium of rough and calm weather.

But of course, you still get this, from my recent attack on Reykjavik:

It was a good sized freighter run up on the Dock. Was going to post a DINSDALE!!! pic... but it's too dark to make out well....

If you save the game within 30 km of any port, when you reload it it will reset all the waypoints, causing ships to crash, or even appear inside the docks. Also, as said, bad weather can play havok with the ships in port, which is silly because that's where ships go to be safe from the weather. None of these games seem to get that right.

When you save the game like that you automatically cause the allies to use their secret weapon - the Philadelphia Project on every ship in the harbor. Ships that were behind subnets can end up in the middle of the harbor, stuck in shallow water, or just about anywhere. Ships close to the docks are likely to partially teleport into solid matter (ironically, not joking here) and end up with half the ship in the water and the rest inside the dock itself. Have even seen ships floating in the air above the all the structures and set on fire to boot. Pretty much anything that is close to some sort of structure or land stands a very good chance of ending up burning from being moved into a solid object.

For some reason I was forced to leave a save my game while I was still in Gibraltor in the spot under where the troop transport is. Much to my surprise I was able to load the saved game but I too was affected by the Philadelphia Project (which also is frequently triggered when loading saved games).

I found it histarical that my CE had to inform me that we were taking damage with almost half my boat now residing in the dock wall.

I once wrote a lengthy story, with pictures, about an air raid on Wilhelmshaven, as when I was approaching I saw several ships sinking and burning. I'm guessing now that the reality was that I probably saved the game somewhere outside the Jade and later came back to finish the patrol in real time.

My last career I got transferred to Lorient with the 2nd Flotilla, left from Wilhelmshaven on a patrol with instructions to return to the French base... that was my first time seeing Lorient in-game and when I approached I could see fires and smoke from fires in several places along the waterfront. When I got closer, some were indeed from sinking ships.

I did not do a save and leave the game and come back and load the save, I had been in the game for hours and came all the way back to Lorient from the mid-Atlantic without ever exiting and reloading. So the burning/sinking ships couldn't have been the result of that.

I just assumed the RAF had been by for a visit. :hmmm:

Depending on the date, they do pay visits to Lorient. I have been in port several times when they come over, bagged a few of them too.:03: I have noticed that the escort vessel for Lorient does run aground in the channel after he has led you out and returned up the channel. He gets up to the point where he would have to turn right towards the dock area and he turns left instead and runs aground and catches fire before completing the turn to go back down the channel.

Direct copy paste from GWX 3.0 Manual

"Restarting a game saved when your U-boat was within 50 km of any harbor will result in the ships in and near that harbor moving straight ahead and (likely as not) running aground and burning since Silent Hunter III does not save the paths plotted by friendly ships traveling near the harbor. These ships will regenerate at the start of your next patrol"

But Frau Kaleun just finished saying she did not do that. Any other ideas?

Just to be clear, I have no doubts that saving too close to port can foul things up when you try to reload the save. If you've done that and just the ships in the harbor are all burning, sinking, grounding themselves, or imbedded in some other solid object, then I wouldn't hesitate to say that saving too close and reloading was the cause.

I just know it's not the only reason you'll see ships burning and sinking in a harbor, because I've seen it and it couldn't have been the reason. And when I've seen it, it wasn't as though the entire harbor was fouled up. Which is why I just assumed it was an RAF calling card and not some big honking game malfunction. :DL

I had this too now.. on my last patrol I came home to a burning ship in my home port. Dident think the RAF would of done a deep raid in 1939

If you take a note of the exact date and time should you come across that phenomena again in the future the ME is easily interrogated to determine if it was a SCR cause.

I'm still trying to get ME to work with my new setup, when I open it there's just a black space where the map should be. I'm still using the Res Fix and in the past all I had to do was rename one of the files temporarily and that resolved everything, but that doesn't seem to work now.

I also have to force a different desktop resolution when the SH3.exe is running to make the Res Fix work without rescaling the image and I'm not sure if that has something to do with it or not. Haven't really tinkered with it enough to know.

Oh, that's okay, it was in a previous career and I don't have the files any more since I didn't save them when I reinstalled everything.

Had to have been the fall of 1940 though since we were in base in Willy on the "official" transfer date and left there some time after that and then returned to Lorient. I figure it wasn't unusual for the RAF to have been making a visit now and then once the base was open for business. :DL
