Construction work formally begins this week on what is expected to be the world's fastest car.

Called Bloodhound, the vehicle has been designed to reach 1,000mph (1,600km/h).

It will attempt to set the mark as it breaks the land speed record on a dried out lake bed in South Africa's Northern Cape late next year.

Bloodhound has been in design for the past three years. It will be powered by a Eurofighter-Typhoon jet engine bolted above a hybrid rocket.

The power unit combination should deliver a thrust in the order of 2,000 kilonewtons (47,000lb).

Worlds fastest car or worlds lowest flying jet? :hmmm: It sounds more like it will be a combination, but it seems skewed to the one you mention here, Worlds Lowest flying jet...:o

What a rush to have the ground only a couple feet away passing by at a thousand miles an hour. Bet the pucker factor will be way up there...

I was a bit confused by the BBC's link to 'Cosworth supplied the engine' to find that Cosworth were indeed providing a Formula1 engine - that's definately not fitted in a Typhoon!

Then I returned to reading the original article -

Bloodhound's Falcon rocket will be the biggest hybrid (solid fuel propellant, liquid oxidiser) booster ever produced in the UK. Such is its scale, it will need a Formula One engine supplied by the legendary Cosworth group just to pump the oxidiser through the motor.

Now it makes sense :yep:

Fastest? Maybe. Supercar? No. "Supercar" is always used in my experience to label a legal, production road car (even if only a handful are biuilt). If this is not "street legal" it ain't a "supercar." IMHO.

Exactly, those are class of their own, along with Hyper cars, which are the elite of the supercar class.

You can say that only because you never sat in the passenger seat of my car. Okay, actually, the old car with the pre oil embargo Chevy V8 engine. Given the lead content of my right foot, I probably never should have been entrusted with it.

The thought of what I would do with an F1 engine simply staggers the imagination. :O:

I though Frau would prefer something along the lines of Saturn V :hmmm: rather than share an F1 engine with Vendor?

I though Frau would prefer something along the lines of Saturn V :hmmm: rather than share an F1 engine with Vendor? Not at all, she sees it as a challenge of the class to have the pleasure to enjoy the journey, preferably in a four wheel carriage :yep:

OMG don't get me started on the Saturn V, nothing more thrilling than watching one of those old Apollo launches.
