I'm new to SH4 and I'm loving it so far. Been using the bearing plotter and finding it useful. But in different videoes I've seen something else - also used on the map screen. It's a scale of some sort placed on the right side of the screen. It shows speed, distance, and what I think says minutes as separate vertical lines for some conversion use. What is this mod and how is it useful?
Also I've seen som new map tools like another pencil and stuff.
Third, I find it a bit difficult to see if the buttons down to the left are on or off - such as seeing if the periscope is up or down. Is there something to make this more clear?
I appreciate any kind of response :)

Welcome aboard!
The minutes/speed/distance mod sounds very much like the nomograph here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=912 you can also get one in metric if you are using that - just search downloads for nomograph.
The other pencil, sounds like the German side, as they get to call in air strikes and stuff like that. Not transferrale to the US side, so no mod for it at the moment, but perhaps the US side is transferrable to German side hmmm.
Third - there are a few UI changing mods, but I don't know what any of them do I'm afraid.
First off, welcome to subsim!

It's called a nomograph. You can use it to work time, distance, and speed problems. For example, let's say you have a target that's traveled 1700 yards in 5 minutes. You draw a line, starting at the 5 minute mark, through the 1700 yard distance mark. Extend the line through to the speed line, and where it intersects will show you the speed. Or, if you have a target traveling at 12 knots. How far will he travel in 10 minutes? Draw a line from the 10 minute mark to the 12 knot mark. Note where in crosses the distance line, there's your answer. 4000 yards.
Once you get the hang of using it, it can be a very useful tool.

The only thing I can think of that modifies that group of tools is U-boat missions add-on. It does add a red pencil to the tools. I believe it's used for the German players to call in support units.
Third, I find it a bit difficult to see if the buttons down to the left are on or off - such as seeing if the periscope is up or down. Is there something to make this more clear?
There are several mods that modify the buttons. I think most of the larger mods modify them. Browse through the downloads section and take a look. There's some great stuff there.
