Unmanned subs making waves in undersea warfare

GRAFENWÖHR, Germany — Unmanned aircraft have been playing a major role in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for years. Now, the U.S. military is beginning to field unmanned submarines.

In a move that could dramatically cut the cost of undersea warfare, NATO is testing three Autonomous Undersea Vehicles, or AUVs, in the Mediterranean Sea this month as part of the alliance’s largest annual anti-submarine warfare exercise.

Will Submariner some day be a shore based job?

Anyone remember SeaQuest? That is sort of where we are heading I think, a large crewed submarine with an inventory of drones that perform recon or attack targets.

Yup, "whiskers" was the nickname for the drones but can't remember the full name for them.

They also had a dolphin that could come in through a moon pool... meaning the sub was pressurized.... :03:
